Ten Thousand Motels Well, this is getting kind of scary. I've got some really close friends down in Lafouche Parish on the bayou. My ex-boss is there. I mean he's kind of a crazy guy and he always stays. He's got little kids though so I hope he evacuated. New Orleans looks in the line of fire too. Just a suggestion....I'm playin' a few cajun tunes today and biting my nails.

the good Now a category five hurricane with sustained winds of 160 miles an hour. And its expected to intensify. If this storm hits New Orleans, the city will be totally destroyed...
This could be Andrew all over again. Or even worse.
August 28th, 2005 10:42 AM
nankerphelge I lived in New Orleans in 1985 and we weathered 3 Hurricanes that year -- although none hit us directly. Being that the city is below sea level, a direct hit would be really horrible. Hope it somehowe misses...

Riffhard I lived in Boca when Andrew hit in '92 and went down to Homested about a month later just to see the destruction myself. It looked like the pictures you see of Hiroshima. No kidding. I have never seen anything like it. New Orleans is expected to be even worse with sustained winds at 170mph right now!! Kiss the French Quarter goodbye. That city is about to be absolutly leveled. The levees around the city are only able handle a level 3 hurricane. Katrina is gonna make a level 3 look like a day at the beach. They are calling for storm surges up to twenty five feet!!! New Orleans is six feet under sea level. That means that it will be around 31 feet under water by this time tomarrow. Thoughts and prayers to all the good people of New Orleans. They're goona need 'em.

Riffhard Holy Fuck! Now they're saying that Lake Ponchartrain is expected to be literly picked up and dumped within the city limits!! This storm is going to be of biblical proportions! I expect that the Stones will be donating some tour revenue to the city of New Orleans very soon.

Poplar New Orleans is in big trouble.
They're trying to squeeze people into the Superdome. No thanks.

also - watch gas prices jump another buck when we find all those gulf riggs wiped off the map.

Jumping Jack It isn't just the off shore platforms, there are several major refineries and pipelines that will be heavily damaged driving up prices significantly for the entire country.

Packing people into the Super Dome is not smart because it wasn't designed for 170 mph winds (120 mph max). The damage seen in Florida is peanuts compared to what will be seen in New Orleans. A week from now they will be asking how people were ever allowed to live in a coastal city below sea level.

There is a high probability the surge will top the burms and flood NO to 30-40 deep. Wooden buildings will be destroyed, windows in engineered buildings will be blown out, and structures relying on their roofs to support their walls will collapse. Snakes, dead bodies, and disease are post disaster hazards that will complicate recovery efforts after the water is pumped out. Think in terms of the recent tsunami more than a typical Floriday hurricane.

This will be really bad news. Say your prayers for everyone throughout the region, particularly those who were late leaving and those who stayed.

Well, almost half of my country is below sealevel (up to 23 feet/7 meters!). The main difference though, is that we usually don't have hurricanes...

I hope everyone will be ok, it looks so horrible for all these people, leaving their homes, not knowing what they're gonna find upon return. Fingers crossed!

Some Guy Fox news just showed 3 dudes out there on surfboards off the coast of Ala.
August 28th, 2005 09:06 PM
glencar Good luck to any ROers living there. I was hoping to go to the show there in March but suddenly that isn't very important.
August 28th, 2005 09:28 PM
gotdablouse Terrible news, seems unlikely but when I was there in 1998, well actually we drove from NO to Miami via Key West, they closed the Miami airport the day after we got out and somehow the hurricane missed, here's to hoping.

I was recently looking at Grande Ile on Google Earth, can't imagine anything being left over there once all is said and done :-(

Stonesthrow My brother lives in New Orleans. He got out this morning and is staying with relatives in Houston. No telling if he will have anything to come back to. We were going to tailgate at the L.S.U./A.S.U. football game on September 10th. So much for that idea.

What are the last 3 words of many rednecks? Hey, watch this!

Maybe Vonage will get some footage of them for a commercial, LOL!

Jumacfly take care my American friends, man what can we do agaisnt that...stay at home, put a good stones record and be careful ...
August 29th, 2005 07:07 AM
glencar The power's out, the people are gone to high ground & the reporters are doing their hurricane porno reports. All will be well.
August 29th, 2005 10:26 AM
Rolling Hansie Just got home from work. Watching CNN coverage of that hurricane. Oh my, this looks really bad. Thoughts and prayers are with you guys. Hang in there and stay safe.
August 29th, 2005 01:49 PM
HellsRollingThunder Pray for all those in Louisiana and everywhere else that that will
be safe, and any pets will be as well.

I have a good friend who is less than 300 miles south of NO
and I hope he and his family are safe. He told me NO is like a
bowl so hope the city is left after Katrina is gone.

Glad to find your post, Stonesthrow. I was thinking of your brother as I watched the coverage.

Hi FG! Hope all is well with you.
August 29th, 2005 04:54 PM
time is on my side At the last moment, Katrina headed slightly east avoiding a direct hit with New Orleans. Also, the hurricane was downgraded from category 5 to category 4 when it hit land. The reports are 6 feets of flooding on the east side of New Orleans with massive amounts of damage everywhere. The good news, if there is any, is that for the Big Easy (New Orleans) it could have been much worse.

Mississippi got a direct hit. The town of Gulfport has been devastated as many towns all along the Gulf in Mississippi and Alabama have been hit hard. The cost in human life is unknown at this time.

This storm is so massive ,that as I look out at my window many hundreds of miles away from these horrible scenes, the clouds have turned completely dark. We are lucky. The forecast is for only two or three inches of rain with thunderstornms & tornadoes likely. We are far, far away from the storms center and are only at the very edge of it's projected path as it moves North.

Right now, as I'm writing this, it's pouring down rain. The remnants of Hurricane Katrina have arrived into town.

Some Guy Here just getting rain and gusts of wind, looks like it will clear up later and be nice. I hope everyone made it through allright!

LadyJane I thought New Orleans was spared, but I'm watching Fox and it's BAD. Worse today than yesterday.

--Martial law has been declared ie you have NO civil rights.
--No electricity or drinking water.
--Water rising in the Central Business district/French Quarter and no one knows why or how to stop it.
--Fear of disease once the mosquitos start swarming.
--Everyone is being ordered out....news people and officials included.
--Emergency crews are helpless.

This is a horrible nightmare. Our prayers go out to everyone involved.

They had no civil rights there from 1687 - 1964 so I don't believe THIS ONE is too big a deal .

Smacky !

While I realize humor is necessary at relieving stress, I see no place for it as I watch our fellow Americans deal with death and destruction.

Not today, Joey...not today.

Ten Thousand Motels "Break in 17th Street Canal Levee is now 200 feet wide and slowly flooding the City of New Orleans. Huge sand bags are being airlifted to try to stem the rush of water in that area. The expectations are that the water will not stop until it reaches lake level."
