Sept. 1, 2005 | Two photographs of New Orleans residents wading through chest-deep water unleashed a wave of chatter among bloggers Wednesday about whether black people are being treated unfairly in media coverage of post-hurricane looting.

One of the images, shot by photographer Dave Martin for the Associated Press, shows a young black man wading through chest-deep waters after "looting" a grocery store, according to the caption. The young man appears to have a case of Pepsi under one arm and a full garbage bag in tow. In the other, similar shot, taken by photographer Chris Graythen for AFP/Getty Images, a white man and a light-skinned woman are shown wading through chest-deep water after "finding" goods including bread and soda, according to the caption, in a local grocery store.

The images were both published on Tuesday by Yahoo News. "We don't edit photo captions," Yahoo P.R. manager Brian Nelson told Salon. "Sometimes we take a look at the photos and we'll choose to pull photos, but the captions run as is." A search of AP and Getty's image databases confirms that Yahoo News did not alter either of the photo captions before posting them online.

glencar I read about those photos. On the first photo's caption, the photog had witnessed the actual lootong. In the second case, the photog *thought* it might ahve been looting but didn't see it happen & couldn't confirm it through any eyewitnesses.

LOL Pdog, I almost brought this up earlier but I didn't know if you watched the show too. Ty was too theatrical for a rock band. Perhaps he should've tried out for Queen instead. But pulling the race card was horrible although I think MiG should've been gone long ago, certainly before Ty.

I like Mig, or at least when I first watched the show he was my fav. My wife thinks the blonde guy is going to win it all. JD is my least favorite, he just bothers me, he seems like he should be on Survivor... It's probably going to be one of those two.

glencar MiG is too theatrical. I like Marty & he seems willing to listen to their advice more than any of the others. I like JD's singing but yeah, he's a meltdown just waiting to happen. I think he would have done better on the traditional casting couch if you know what I mean.

I can't believe a fucking hurricane has turned into a race issue... New Orleans is one of the poorest cities in the country. In addition, most of it's residents are black. As a result, the majority of the people stranded are black. HOWEVER, it's not like the whites have been all helicopter lifted & the blacks have been left to die. Anyone who was in the city when the levee broke is in the same situation whether they were black, white, red, or yellow. I cannot believe that people are make this a race issue!!! I honestly cannot believe the bullshit that is being spewed by the so-called "intelligent posters" on this board...

UNFUCKINGBELIEVEABLE!!!

The race issue existed long before the hurricane, we're just seeing the results of our denial that it still does exist today.
Is looting a natural reaction to fear, regardless if what is being taken is needed or not. How many actual looters are there compared to the population that is stranded and in need of help? Is that proportionate to the coverage of the looting? Why is the looting put in the same category as the shooting, it makes people believe they're connected and the same indivduals are responsible.
God forbid one of us bloggers here, ever does something that gets large scale meadia negative media attention. Not only would that individual representus, they may represent all Stones fans! And were just a small percentage of Stones fans to begin with.
Race isn't the issue in the rescue operations, it was the reason they weren't prepared for this to begin with, IMO. Poor people aren't an economic priority, period! These class systems are a direct result of our prejudices.

Okay, you don't fix the levees, well then you better be prepared to bus people out of that city BEFORE it floods. Because once it does flood, ain't much going in and ain't much coming out, as we all see.

Yes, that's what baffles me. I can understand that the cost of improving the levees would've been so high (and the probability of a huge hurricane so low) that they decided to take the risk. But why was there no efficient evacuation plan? It's just fucked up that the buses get caught in traffic jams and arrive hours late... That kind of problem has got nothing to do with the flood – it's more about figuring out how you're gonna evacuate thousands of people in case of a huge disaster, be it a hurricane or a terrorist attack. I'm not saying that in order to bash any politician in particular, because I don't really know how responsibilities are divided between the city, the state and the US government. But after 9/11, I kind of expected the evacuation of big cities to be one of the priorities in terms of crisis management plans. Anyway, what a tragic situation, it's so sad to see that beautiful city under water…
September 2nd, 2005 06:11 PM
glencar I saw a photo today of several hundred NOLA school buses under water. Their crummy mayor asked for 500 Greyhound buses to be sent in NOW for evacuation becasue the adults shouldn't have to take school buses. This is a crisis formed by mistakes starting at the local level. When this hurricane first hit, many were praising the mayor. I think that has now stopped, regardless of what party he is a member of.

sammy davis jr. What kills me is the 300 lb. women holding two, three, four kids under five, saying "my babies need food and water" etc.... If they would have gotten off their fat asses and worked and/ or received an education, and not sponged off of welfare for the past 5-6 years, they might have had a car they could have evacuated in. But that's too much to ask isn't it? Quit fucking having kids if you can't raise them properly!!!

Ten Thousand Motels The last I heard my friends in Lafourche Parish are ok. But I haven't talked to them since before they returned home from Baton Rouge a couple days ago. I'm not even sure they made it home...maybe they're staying with someone else. I can't get through as the phone lines always say "all circuits are busy now, try again later".

glencar No, he didn't say that. But this reflexive Bush-bashing doesn't solve a thing. I've been at DU.com & another lefty site and the stuff spewing there is funny only because I get the distinct feeling that these people are actually glad about what happened because they get to attack the President again.

I'm the one who gets stuck x-raying them when they come into the ER via ambulance because of a fight with one of their baby daddy. And, in most cases, they're usually pregnant with another child. There's where our tax dollars are going.

Wow all this screaming about welfare fraud and tax dollars wasted. . .even if you support this war you have to be outraged about 9 Billion dollars going unaccounted for in Iraq. Our nations treasury had 9 billion dollars bilked from it. Your money my money. . .no matter your political leaning! Get some perspective.

Do you see that picture? That is a picture of local school buses and other municipal buses that have been left to flood in a NO goverment parkinglot!! There are over two hundred buses there!! They could have been used to evacuate the poor victims?!?!? Is that also Bush's fault?! Fuck no! It's the fault of a piss poorly run state and local goverment of Louisianna. Which,by the way,is a blue state run by the most corrupt pols this side of Trenton,New Jersey.

The fact is that many, many, many people have loads of explaining to do! Bush has done perfectly fucked up job of dealing with tragedy from the begining, but he is FAR from the only one to blame. That picture truely does speak a thousand words. If not ten thousand. Because right now the word is at least ten thousand are dead in NO!!! Yet the buses sit in a lot flooded! WHY Michael Moore? WHY you stupid fat fuck did a democrat governor and a democrat mayor allow that to happen?!?! WHY YOU STUPID POMPASS FAT FUCK!!!! Ain't Monday morning quarterbacking fun?! You stupid fat fuck!!!

Oh,I know that Blue, but it does seem has if someone felt it nessasary to post some of that fat fuck's drivel. So I just thought that posting one picture would answer the hundreds of wasted words from Herr FatFuckmiester. One picture and his "blame game" falls to peices. I hate the fat fuck with every fiber of by being.

Look at the picture FatFuck and tell me who's fault it is that those buses sit a municipal lot?!

glencar LOL I was just kidding you. It's a shame that a tragedy of this proportion has become fodder for their endless drivel. At least they waited a decent interval after 9-11.
September 2nd, 2005 09:04 PM
Nellcote The bald headed mayor had the gaul to blast Bush, and he could not even muster an evacuation on those busses on his own. Look at those things sitting in the water. No, Mr. Mayor did not get his palmed greased like every other official in Nawlins. No, he had to flee to Baton Rouge before the storm hit! Someone needs to give that mayor a major can of ass whoppin...

Go rent "The Big Easy" while it's a great flick, super music it shows all about what Nawlins is or was...

Riffhard, we should start a new political party... How did we ever diagree on issues in the past, you and Blue are making so much sense to me... The only thing I've been upset about has nothing to do with the aftermath... You guys have been pretty much dead on about everything that's taken place since the horror show started...
I find Michael Moore as about as interesting as Bill O'Reilly. Fun to watch when I'm not busy actually trying to find the truth... The only spin in this situation was katrina, everything else is just a humanitarian disaster.
I can't even imagine what the death toll may wind up being!

LadyJane ENOUGH already.

This thread has turned into as big of a disgrace as the relief effort.

The name calling and stereotyping needs to stop.

Can we agree that there is enough blame to go around???

Republicans, Democrats, Liberals, Conservatives, Men, Women, Caucasians, Blacks, rich and poor ALL misjudged the situation and ALL fucked up.

As fans of The Rolling Stones, can't WE rise above all of this and agree that we all feel pain for the victims? We wish them well...we are grateful to the relief workers and pray that we LEARN from our mistakes and work very hard to assure that this never happens again.

Please??? Can we do that??? I think we can.

LJ.

I'm not trying to be insensitive to those who carry around extra baggage Angie. In some circles he is known by the nickname Fat Fuck. Politicaly Correct or not that's the way it is. My apologies to those who may be offended by that term, but I cannot begin to describe my outright anger at this guy for politicizing one of my counties worst disasters ever. Especialy when he only chooses to pick and choose the facts that suit his own socialist agenda.

He is scum. Fat scum, but scum all the same.
