Yes, I did

I see that for those hard-core fans reading setlists the second was better, but the band was great both nights and I enjoyed more the first show. Some of my all time favs, my favs from Modern Times and a fucking great version of "Masters Of War" that hypnotized the whole audience and was listened in complete silence during the whole song!

Indeed i too, the first one was fantastic, enjoy the band, the music, the setlist very cool, but for me the second was better (and a friend geft to me the ticket a bit more near) i enjoyed more the Ain`t Talking version! Well, i could tell that are the shows of the year! dont think that next Rod Stewart shows will be more exiting than these.

What the Press Had to Say

BY THOR CHRISTENSEN / The Dallas Morning News (after the first Dallas show)

"You think I'm over the hill?" Bob Dylan sang with sneer Thursday night at the House of Blues. “You think I'm past my prime?"

The answer, my friends, isn't blowing in the wind. It's a very concrete "No."

At his best, the 66-year-old legend was full of spit and venom – a grizzled blues master with a voice that bordered on the demonic. And even when the show wobbled - as it did for about a third of the 105-minute set - Mr. Dylan still gave it his all, bobbing his shoulders and pummeling his keyboard in "Highway 61 Revisited" like he was Little Richard.

Before the show, there was reason to believe Mr. Dylan might not be at his best. He hasn't played live in four months, and his handlers were apparently so sure he'd be rusty they issued a statement saying press wasn't invited to his three sold-out H.O.B. shows.

What next? No fans under 30 allowed? No one who doesn't own Slow Train Coming? No eye-rolling during his harmonica solos? They needn't have been so uptight. It was one of Mr. Dylan's more exciting Dallas gigs in recent decades - much better than in '95 at the Dallas Music Complex or '03 at the Granada, though not as stunning as his '99 Starplex show with Paul Simon.

Dressed in black, with a wide-brimmed hat blocking his face, Mr. Dylan walked on to the dimly lit stage flanked by his usual band – longtime bassist Tony Garnier, drummer George Recili, pedal steel player Donnie Herron and guitarists Stu Kimball and Denny Freeman (who's originally from Dallas).

Despite the four-month break, they started the show with a bang: A rocking version of "Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat," followed by a wicked jump blues overhaul of "Watching the River Flow." Soon after, Mr. Dylan unplugged his guitar and retreated for the rest of the show to electric keyboard - his instrument of choice in recent years.

Visually, Keyboard Bob isn't nearly as fun to watch as Electric Guitar Bob. But it gave Mr. Freeman more room to execute his knife-like guitar solos in songs like "Thunder on the Mountain" and Muddy Waters' "Rollin and Tumblin." And when the whole band kicked into high-octane blues-rock ("Can't Wait,'' "High Water (For Charley Patton)") they were the world's best middle-aged garage band.

They had their share of tentative moments in slower songs like "Nettie Moore." And some of the new arrangement didn't work, especially the dirge-paced "Positively 4TH Street." But for every fizzled experiment, another one soared, like the bizarre, Brian Eno-style "Girl of the North Country" and the fiddle-laced waltz version of "Blowin' in the Wind" that closed the show.

Curveballs like that tend to confuse casual fans who like to hear the hits played the way they know them. But Mr. Dylan couldn't care less: He keeps everyone guessing - including himself - which is why he'll never be past his prime.

Bob in Spain

There has been a lot of talk over the last 2 months about Bob doing some concerts in Spain. They seem to be confirmed in all respects other than that Bob’s people haven’t given their official confirmation.

I first heard something back in November when Paul Pearson sent me this intriguing email, “Bob Dylan has stepped out to lead promotional efforts for the International Exposition on Water and Sustainable Development in Zaragoza, Spain next summer. Dylan has recorded a new version of "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" - 45 years after laying down the original track - exclusively for the Expo, and will be appearing in European ads touting "the mission to make water safe and clean for every human being living in this world," as Dylan puts it in the ad. The Expo website features a video of the new "Hard Rain," including footage of Dylan and his band recording the song in a Nashville studio this year.”

Since then, everything has come via Antonio Iriarte, on the ground in Spain.

On January 8th - http://www.diariodenavarra.es/diario2/noticia.asp?not=2008010802125984&dia=20080108&seccion=culturaysociedad&seccion2=musica&chnl=40
Anyway, the above link is to today's "Diario de Navarra", a local Pamplona (Navarre) daily. Apparently, local promoter "in&out" is currently negotiating with Dylan's management in order to organise a concert in Pamplona, June 25 being the date under consideration. Or so it says here. The reporter also mentions that there will likely be other concerts in Spain, most probably at least one in Zaragoza.

On January 9th - You've probably already noticed the news in today's ER update. For your reference, here's the entire article from yesterday's La Vanguardia (a Barcelona daily), but it's only a report on what the year 2008 will bring Spain on the music front, and it only says re. Dylan that he is to play fourteen (14) concerts this summer, and that the Barcelona date is yet to be determined (highlighted in yellow hereunder). If it all works out, it would be his longest Spanish tour ever (1999 holds the record so far, with 11 gigs). From other sources, it is quite clear that Zaragoza will host one of the shows (what with all the Water Expo rubbish), and as I told you yesterday, Pamplona is a firm candidate for another. We'll see.
The Dylan bit from the article simply says that there are 14 concerts in Spain in 14 different localities.

On January 13th, Antnio wrote, again, as per the local press, it would seem that Dylan is to play a Festival ("Músicos en la naturaleza" is the name of the event, i.e, "Musicians in Nature") organised for the third year in a row by the Autonomous Community of Castilla León on the fringes of the Regional Park of the Gredos Sierra. The actual name of the venue (it's an open air show, of course) appears to be "finca de Mesegosillo" (finca means "estate" or "property·") near the village of Hoyos del Espino (Ávila). Sting played there last year. The date mentioned in press reports is July 12, and the concert is given as fully booked and confirmed.

http://www.icalnews.com/FichaNoticia.cfm?id=135250

On January 14th, Antnio wrote - Today's online version of "El Periódico" (several print editions throughout Spain) includes a report by Nacho Para on the Spanish tour.
http://www.elperiodico.com/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=46&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=474327&idseccio_PK=1026
This does not actually feature anything new, just a couple of educated guesses (that cities under consideration include Zaragoza and Oviedo) plus the new information that Gamerco have admitted being behind the tour's organisation, but that most of the dates are still under negotiation ("open dates" they call them).

On February 9th, according the "Hoy" newspaper - http://www.hoy.es/20080209/sociedad/dylan-cierra-gira-europea-20080209.html - Dylan's show in Mérida will take place on July 110, at 21h at the local bull ring (plaza de toros). It must finish before 23h, when a theatre play is scheduled to begin at the nearby roman theater (where Dylan played in 1993). The article is slightly confusing, as it insists that this would be Dylan's last concert in Spain, and the last of his European tour, and that he is to return to the States after it. However, the Ávila "Music in Nature" festival has already announced Dylan's appearance on July 12, as you may remember. "Hoy" also says that Dylan is to arrive to Mérida after performing in Lisbon (Portugal). That's news, if it were true.

On February 9th,Antonio wrote - Anyway, there's rumours of shows in Galicia, now. Today's "La Voz de Galicia" mentions that several Galician cities are negotiating with the promoter, bidding for the only show in the region. Main contenders are La Coruña and Vigo. You can read all about it here: http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/cultura/2008/02/20/0003_6582820.htm

Bob Dylan Encyclopedia – T Shirts

There is a new, very limited-edition Bob Dylan Encyclopedia t-shirt now on sale on Michael Gray’s blog (at http://bobdylanencyclopedia.blogspot.com/), following the one that sold out in 2006. Again the new one is black high-quality cotton, again there’s the same understatedness to it - no writing, plain back - but this time the image is silver instead of white (and the silver does not go grungy in the wash). The sizes available are Small, Large of Extra Large. Photo and details on Michael’s blog.

Dylan Photographic Exhibition at Snap Galleries, Birmingham in May.

Bob Dylan from 1966 by Barry Feinstein will be showing at SNAP Galleries, Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. Here’s Snap’s blurb -

Barry Feinstein’s first UK exhibition starts on Saturday 3 May 2007. We can promise a special show for Dylan fans as this exhibition will feature work that Barry has never exhibited / offered for sale before. It coincides with the publication of Barryʼs new hardcover book of Dylan photographs, “Real Moments” which will be available to order soon for £25. Of course you’ll be able to get it cheaper on Amazon if you really want to, but as an incentive we’ll be offering a nice Dylan exhibition poster to anyone who buys the book through us. The book is ace – we’ve been lucky enough to see the proofs. We can also promise you plenty of very loud ’66 electric Dylan blasting out throughout the show. If any kind individual feels like sending us CDs of any unissued live material from 66, it would be most appreciated. To mark this first Dylan exhibition, Barry is going to be offering a special “package deal” which will include a copy of his book along with a framed Dylan photograph from 1966 chosen by Barry and which will be signed by Barry, all for a very special price at around £250. Further details nearer the time, but this will be a one time offer and a chance to own a signed Barry Feinstein photograph for a very very keen price.
We’re delighted that good friend of the gallery, the talented New York illustrator Aaron Meshon is creating a special limited Bob Dylan print that will be available for the first time at the exhibition. If you’ve seen Aaron’s Bruceville map you’ll get the idea! Everything in the exhibition will be for sale, in a range of sizes, with prices for a signed handmade 16 x 20 inch silver gelatin photograph starting at around £1,000. Other sizes will be available, and if you want a bespoke piece in a particular size, just ask and we’ll see if we can accomodate you. To give you a taster, we’ve posted a small number of Barry’s 1966 photographs online here: http://gallery.mac.com/guywhite#100271

Martha Very nice set. I love Watching The River Flow live. It grooves me.

How are you doing Voodoo? Did you happen to meet the tape, Jay? He knows of you through the expectingrain website. Told me he'd heard of you when we were chatting it up in Dallas and I mentioned ROCKSOFF to him. He also told me he'd heard that The Stones were going to be on Saturday Night Live....and that he heard this somewhere on the radio. Anyone else heard about this?

"I'm going to sleep over there, that's where the music's coming from."

Love and peace,

It would go from great to fantastic, if so.

Meanwhile - the torrent of the year is at Hungercity right now; Town Hall, NY 1963 in superb quality; never (widely) circulated before now.

Yeah, about 40%, Gazza
I've had parts of this one as well, but the torrent here is a stunning listen - finally the full concert

Interesting to see that a collector torrented this one after getting the news about a bootleg-label (Hollow Horn) was about to release Town Hall 1963.
So obviously, this was circulating among some hardcore collectors...for who know how long

Makes one wonder what else is out there; both Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones....

The thing that aways got me about this show was how high a % of the songs were unreleased at the time - and stayed unreleased.

Dylan's 2nd album was still to come out a few weeks later, and of the 24 songs played, he does only 3 off his first album and five off the soon to be released 'Freewheelin'! Three would be on "Times They Are A Changin'" which wouldnt be out for another year - and most of the rest were either released decades later or still haven't been.

Of course, this show and the Carnegie Hall 6 months later were taped for a live album (of entirely new songs) which ended up being scrapped, but its pretty amazing that at 21 years of age and with his 2nd album still not finished, he could play shows like this which almost entirely consisted of songs the audience would never have heard before.

It is beyond any other artist wildest dreams, indeed...

Bob Dylan is moving faster than his own audience

VoodooChileInWOnderl The show in Monterrey was as I predicted, only around 7,000 of 17,000 seats. The expensive areas partially empty and the cheap seats crowded.

Most of the audience ignorant of Bob Dylan music with of course some exceptions. They were seated most of the show and only enthusiastic with "Like a Rolling Stone", however they were very noisy for the encore.

The set is up, the show started at 21:17 and ended at 23:11
