socialism has been a dead issue since the Berlin wall came down - hell, even mainland china is slowly becoming part of the "western" capitalist system

and wait until it (western capitalism) really takes hold there with the absolutely huge market and pool of resouces (human and otherwise) that they have eventually (maybe not in our life-times but i'd say within the next 100 - 150 years) the centre of gravity of world politics will shift from Washington to Beijing (sp?)

You know there are very few rich patrician voters (the nature of capitalism...) so he could never even win prom queen appealing solely to them. i know what you mean and having seen him perform over the last few months he's clearly getting good advice as to how to "play the crowd" and was very adept in his "performance"

it's certainly disheartening 'tho see that one of Kerry's "negatives" is that he was considered too intelligent - this "dumbing down" of the level of debate really drives me nuts but then I'm an over-educated type who also probably thinks too much
