I will bet $1 in hard American currency that none of the people saying Bill is the best bassist ever are bass players or drummers themselves - the idea of it is so ridiculous. I can see him being your FAVORITE, but he was really run-of-the-mill, and only the fact that he was playing with one of the greatest drummers in the world ever lifted him above mediocrity.
Robbie Shakespeare IS the shit - a great player. Significantly, hardly ever mentioned without his drummer - bass players are nothing by themselves. I'm not a big Sinead O'Connor fan but I heard a cut from her new album, a Peter Tosh song with Sly & Robbie backing her up, and it sounded great.
Agreed on Bill.
Honorable mention ; Noel Redding of Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hey Joe springs to mind, esp the bit at the end. Wind Cries Mary too?
I've heard of Sly & Robbie, but I don't think i've ever heard anything by them, what sort of thing is it?
What would be a good starting album? |

I actually think it's quite a good-looking bass!
Actually, McCartney switched to a Rickenbaker in '66, but went back to the Violin bass in 1969 for the Get Back sessions.
Another thing I'd like to add is that I think Paul McCartney was one of the most innovative and excellent bassists while with the Beatles. Along with John Entwhistle, I think he bought the instrument to the fore and taught a new generation just how important and wonderful the bass can be when applied properly.
For examples, listen to his playing on Revolver and for Entwhistle, well, any Who track!
you macca detractors are decieved by your blind hatred for the beatles....
and that was a good one perks -
bernard edwards was as fast and furious as he was funky....
those chic grooves are so heavy its like voodoo.

Although I agree that neither are strictly categorised as 'rock players', they are both more than capable of handling any type of modern music forms; the two I speak of are, Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastouris. |
