F505 - Lauda, yes! And Nelson Piquet MUST be a fan. |
|
Sir Stonesalot |
Wasn't Nicky Lauda badly burned a few years back?
And wasn't Nelson Piquet killed? Or am I thinking of someone else....he was Brazilian no? |
|
Sir Stonesalot |
It was Senna that I was thinking of...never mind. |
|
sasca |
Ayrton Senna, like Piquet a Brazilian, was killed at Imola in '94. Niki Lauda was almost burned to death at the old Nurburgring in '76. Piquet almost died at Imola in '87 and at Indianapolis in '92. |
|
Sir Stonesalot |
I remember watching Senna's crash. It didn't look too bad at the time. Like Earnhardt's crash at Daytona. I'd seen plenty of drivers walk away from much more violent looking crashes. Obviously the violence of the crash has little to do with the survivability factor.
Or perhaps it was TV that made the crashes look less violent than they actually were.
I love auto racing. |
|
sasca |
Senna would have been fine except that a wishbone from his suspension pierced his helmet. |
|
jb |
Many in Florida love auto racing too(not me)...I think we just had the Homestead something? |
|
Sir Stonesalot |
When I was just a young Squire, my family lived about 500 yards from a dirt track. They raced Sprint Cars, Modifieds, and Late Models there. My Dad played golf with some of the drivers, and they'd invite us to watch the races from down in the pits. This is all very exciting stuff to a 6 year old, and I loved it. I even got to ride with one of the drivers for a few laps(not during a race, it was just practice, and I don't think he was going as fast as he could.).
So I've always been a bit of a gearhead. I've been to watch about every kind of race imaginable, including F1(Nurburgring, and Watkins Glen), CART(Nazereth), Nascar, (Dover, Pocono, Richmond, Watkins Glen), as well as local dirt racing.
I used to Drag Race. I had a '72 Chevelle SS with a 400 small block. That car was pure American MUSCLE. I ran low 13's and high 12's with it in the 1/4 mile.
Any other gear heads here?

Not a gearhead, but I have some cousins in North Carolina who race...Also, my dad grew up next to Benny Parsons, the nascar commentator and former racer...They remain good friends and as child, I can remember a number of drivers coming by the house, Petty, the older Earnhardt, Junior Johnson |
