The Eggman GREAT tune

After months of never knowing what this tune was called after hearing it once on the radio months ago, PLASTERED after coming home from this club...I made my friends and I wait until the song was finished so I could hear the rest of it...of course it was 3 or 4 in the morning so I couldn't wait until the radio station dj comes in at like 6 or 7 to find what it was called.

At the time my guess was..it was called "The Put ON" OR "Living in the Funk"...either by Kinks (ala. SUPERMAN era.) or it was Pete Townshend album..well at the time I searched for Peter Townshend albums around the time of the movie "RISKY BUSINESS" in which this song sounded like it was associated with it, but even with my tool being ALLMUSICGUIDE.COM, i was outta luck..couldn't find it

September 11th, 2004 11:56 PM
The Eggman LOW AND BEHOLD 6 mos later, after picking up some veal for supper, I HEAR IT again on the way home and not PLASTERED....I raced right home to phone the radio station and the DJ said it was called "EMINENCE FRONT - BY THE AMAZING WHO", ahhh my search was over...I found it

ANYWAYS, I played the song for my Dad and he said it has some kinda meaning, soemthing with Ireland's Politics?...Can anyone fill this in?

LadyJane This one's for Joey ...

Eminence Front is one of those songs that makes you put on your Rock n Roll face and jam. I love this song. The Who really are pretty fuckin cool.

wastefully yours,
LJ.

sirmoonie Like many other dimensions of his mind, Joey's knowledge is once again derivative of someone else's - in the Who case, mine.

Good on ya Eggie for recognizing the genuis in the last Who tune ever built....

P.S. Never heard anywhere that EmFro had anything to do with Ireland.

Eggy ...........................................

" Eminence Front " is from the final WHO album , 1982's " It's Hard " and is a genuine classic --- really , it is Pete Townshend's last great anthemic hit record . Many individuals on this board make fun of the " It's Hard " album and say it is no better than the abysmal " Dirty Work " disc ............. but name me one classic off of " Dirty Work " !!!!!

W- W- W- What ?!?! ............You can't ?!?!?! ..........Well then , I rest my case !

W- W- W- What AGAIN ?!?!?! ....Oh , sure !!!!!!! :

" The sun shines
And people forget
The spray flies as the speedboat glides
And people forget
Forget they're hiding
The girls smile
And people forget
The snow packs as the skier tracks
And people forget
Forget they're hiding.

Behind an eminence front
Eminence front - It's a put on.

Come on join the party
Dress to kill
Won't you come and join the party
Dress to kill.

DRINKS FLOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
People forget
That big wheel spins, the hair thins
People forget
Forget they're hiding
The news slows
People forget
The shares crash, hopes are dashed
People forget
Forget they're hiding.

Dress to kill
Dress yourself, dressed to kill................"

justinkurian There's a great solo Townshend version on one of the Scoop albums...

It's Townshend on the piano, with a little tape loop of some drums...very laid back. The opposite of the original, but it's cool to check out.

Nasty Habits This one goes out to Joey in every way shape or form . . .

I love you, dirty fucker
Sister and a brother
Moaning in the moonlight
Singing for your supper
'Cos I had it I had it I had it with you
I had it I had it I had it with you

You always seem to haunt me
Always try to haunt me
Serving out injuctions
Shouting out instructions
But I had it I had it I had it with you
I had it I had it I had it with you
I had it I had it I had it with you

And I love you with a passion
In and out of fashion
Always got behind you
When other tried to blind you
But I had it I had it I had it with you
I had it I had it I had it with you
I had it I had it I had it with you

It is such a sad thing
To watch a good love die
I've had it up to here babe
I've got to say goodbye
'Cos I had it I had it I had it with you
And I had it I had it I had it with you

Loved you in the lean years
Loved you in the fat ones
You're a mean mistreater
You're a dirty dirty rat scum
I had it I had it I had it with you
I had it I had it I had it with you
I had it I had it I had it with you
I had it with you
I had it with you
I had it with you.........

The Eggman But does the song mean something as I earlier stated?

apart from having one of the funkiest break-downs in Who history
September 13th, 2004 11:29 AM
telecaster I saw The Who at what was billed there last outdoor show ever

Cotton Bowl November 1982

It was so cold John's bass was going out of tune mid-note
on Eminence Front

P.S. Is there any organization, corporation, charity, Brownie troop, sports team, soft drink manufacturer, etc
that Townsend will not sell "Baba O'Reilly" to?

Now they are using it for CBS TV shows
September 13th, 2004 12:02 PM
T&A I'm not a big Who fan -but Eminence Front is a rare exception for me. Why? It's one of the few Who songs that actually has a back-beat and you can dance to it! The biggest diff between the Stones and Who is that the Stones are R&B-based and you can dance to most of their stuff. Can't to the Who....

glencar It was actually a great song. Not quite as good as "Athena" but great in its own way. And yes, it was a comment on the Northern Ireland situation, according to an interview I read years ago.

I always thought it was a comment on the U.S. Political Situation .

Shiver .....................................

W- W- What ?!?! ..............Oh , sure !!!!! :

" Athena, I had no idea how much I'd need her
In peaceful times I hold her close and I feed her
My heart starts palpitating when I think my guess was wrong
But I think I'll get along
She's just a girl - she's a bomb

Athena, all I ever want to do is please her
My life has been so settled and she's the reason
Just one word from her and my troubles are long gone
But I think I'll get along
She's just a girl - she's a bomb

Just a girl just a girl
Just a girl just a girl
Just a girl just a girl
She's just a girl

Athena, my heart felt like a shattered glass in an acid bath
I felt like one of those flattened ants you find on a crazy path
I'd of topped myself to give her time she didn't need to ask
Was I a suicidal psychopath?
She's just a girl - she's a bomb

Consumed, there was a beautiful white horse I saw on a dream stage
He had a snake the size of a sewer pipe living in his rib cage
I felt like a pickled priest who was being flambed
You were requisitioned blondie
She's just a girl - she's a bomb

I'm happy, I'm ecstatic
Just a girl just a girl
Just a girl just a girl
Just a girl just a girl
She's just a girl

Look into the face of a child
Measure how long you smiled
Before the memory claimed
How long would children remain
How long would children remain

Athena, you picked me up by my lapels and screamed "leave her"
It felt like waking up in heaven on an empty meter
And now you're stuck with a castrated leader
And I hate the creep, I didn't mean that
She's a bomb
I just said it
She's a bomb
I didn't mean it, please
She's a bomb

Athena, I had no idea how much I need her
My life has been so settled and she's the reason
Just one word from her and my troubles are long gone
But I get along
She's just a girl, she's a bomb
She's just a girl, she's a bomb ...........( fade to SDH ) "

Prodigal Son Woah, all thesde recitations of early 80s Townshend hymns from Joey is getting me in the mood to pop in Empty Glass (great album)and All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes (okay but not nearly as good as EG). You gotta love songs like "Let My Love Open the Door," "Empty Glass," "Gonna Get Ya," "Jools and Jim," "Cats in the Cupboard," "Rough Boys" (despite its lyrical content), "I Am an Animal" (where Petey calls himself "Queen of the fucking universe!"), "The Sea Refuses No River," "Exquisitely Bored," "Stardom in Action," "Face Dances, Pt. 2," "North Country Girl," "Somebody Saved Me" and "Slit Skirts." I gotta buy White City now.

"Somebody Saved Me"
I stood at the door beside her
But she wouldn't let me pass
I was such a bore and I lied to her
I said I didn't really want her ass
I went away in the mud and rain
The gang became snide and laughed
I was slayed, but I smiled and the pain
Began to subside at last

And when I got back to my hotel
I wondered if the thunder meant I'd landed in hell
And on the forecourt I slipped and fell
I cracked my stupid head and I heard a bell
I thought, hey

Somebody saved me, it happened again
Somebody saved me, I thank you my friend
Somebody saved me, from a fate worse than heaven
'Cause if I'd had her for just an hour
I'd have wanted her forever
Somebody saved me

You would have thought that I'd have learned
Twenty years ago or more
A beautiful girl raised her mouth and yearned
But I didn't know what lips were for
I ran away in the mud and rain
The weather here is never too bright
She'd had an affray with her man and came
For solace and the means to fight

She finally bored with seducing me
And took up with some geezer from the Ealing scene
It nearly killed him like it would've killed me
When her original man snapped his fingers and she obeyed, she obeyed

But somebody saved me, it happened again
Somebody saved me, I thank you my friend
Somebody saved me, from a fate worse than heaven
'Cause if I'd had her for just an hour
I'd have wanted her forever

I don't know about guardian angels
All I know about's staying alive
I can't shout about spiritual labels
When little ones die and big ones thrive

All I know is that I've been making it
And there've been times that I didn't deserve to
Every show there's been more faking it
But right at the point of no return

Somebody saves me, again and again
Somebody saves me, I thank you my friend
Somebody saves me, from a fate worse than heaven
'Cause if I blew it for a single moment
I'd blow it forever
But somebody saves me

I took up the connection once
Made me feel quite aloof
I never could queue to collect my lunch
While I was pursuing the truth
So I left my folks in the mud and rain
It always rains in Sunnyside Road
I lived hippy jokes, getting stoned insane
'Till the rain looked just like snow

But there was a soul in whom I could depend
He worked himself crazy while I laid in bed
I never leaned on a person like I leaned right then
And when I finally woke up clean
My friend was dead, stone dead

Somebody saved me, it happened again
Somebody saved me, I thank you my friend
Somebody saved me, I ain't ready for heaven
'Cause if I'd seen you for a second I'd have wanted to see you forever
Somebody saved me
Somebody saved me

Testify!!!

Prodigal Son "Somebody Saved Me" is? Sounds more like an autobiographical thing for Pete. All the insecure crap in it as well as the reckless life he was living before the album came out (by that time, early 1982, he was cleaned up) seems to be mentioned as well. But I could see how it might mention Moonie.

sammy davis jr. Most Who songs aren't danceable because of the lunatic who played on the majority of 'em. Moonie was great at what he did, but he wasn't conventional by drumming standards. No surprise Kenny Jones played on Eminence.

Moonie couldn't dance .

You see , as a whole , the Stones , like THE WHO , are a sound . To pretend that certain parts mean more than others is to commit moral and intellectual suicide .

Personally , I have no use for " Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy " WHO !!!!!

Whilst the early stuff is very vital , coherent and separates THE WHO from such monstrosities as Led Zep , etc. -- I do indeed worship at the altar of QUADROPHENIA WHO : the kinda WHO that you KNOW is IN THE ROOM !

Largess , Cash Cow , Powerful , Overwhelming , Beastly WHO that soon takes over and consumes everything in its path and changes the course of History .
