Monkey Woman Thanks for the pics, Lour, they're fabulous!!!

The Stones had a great night. The setlist was good, not as fabulous as in the Olympia but still very cool: LWM (Mick sings now 'They're so 21st century' about the children with dirty necks ), HOF, Heartbreaker (awesome!), No Expectations (Ronnie's slide... Aaaw!) and Worried About You (probably the best version they ever played), plus Keith's The Neerness Of You (tears in the eye for me, thank you Keef baby) plus the 5 soul covers... Ain't Too Proud To Beg was fabulous. ENSTL a pleasure, Mick sang a heartfelt 'It's good to be home!' twice. THSMLI... Incredible! And Can't Turn You Loose... The Stones are definitely great soul performers, these songs really compliment Mick's voice, but also Charlie's drumming: tight, swinging, powerful as a transcontinental train engine! Great job from Bobby Keys and the back up singers too. Lisa had a funny moment with Mick on HTW, as usual she sidled to him, caressed his chest and belly from behind, he took her hands and made her caress his crotch! She made mock-outraged faces and ran away, but not after tousling his hair!
The reports about Mick 'loosing' his voice are exaggerated, IMO, but he did sound strained in the end, but after 14 songs, most of them demanding in the vocal department, this is not unexpected. He seemed to be taking care in the end, singing less loud, so as not to damage his voice probably.

These club shows are really something else, whatever the setlist.

Being so close, I could see not only the colour of Mick and Keith's eyes but every chest hair and every bead of sweat - and believe me, Mick sweated buckets! He throw some water in the audience (much needed, LOL!) and I caught some in the face. Funny!

Great night for Keith and Ronnie too. Ronnie's NOT drunk, I have to tell you, nor stoned. Just having a good time, grinning and making faces like a court jester, but playing great, especially slide guitar. And Keith was in charge, you could see he's the boss on stage, everybody looks at him from time to time to see what's happening. He checks often with Mick and Charlie too or gives Ronnie a nod of approval. Never mind that Chuck provides some musical guidelines, Keith has the priviledge of starting the songs or closing them down or changing the order of the setlist without preample. Wich he did with Rock Me Baby.

We'll probably never know exactly what happend about MT or if he was supposed to play at all this night. Sure, he was in the audience, but did he go backstage and rehearse with them?

Even without him, it was a night to remember!

Hannalee Review by Mick's "lillebror" in The Independent

The Rolling Stones, London Astoria, London
Nice one, bruv - a bit loud, though. Christopher Jagger gives his verdict on his brother Mick's band
29 August 2003

Wednesday night at the Astoria was the Stones' one small-venue date in England. The demand for tickets was huge. So, lads, there's a good living still to be made at this game. Question was, how would the downsizing work?

Remarkably well, is the short answer. OK, so Mick may have run out of runway space, and the guitar amps were a touch on the Motörhead side. Like most guitarists, Keith likes to have the potential to be as loud as possible - even in small and intimate venues such as this one. But the set-list justified the choice of the Astoria. We didn't get any grunge blues, but instead we were treated to a nice, old-fashioned R&B set, some of which might have been aired at the old Ken Colyer club, about 100 yards away, in the 1960s.

After the Chuck-Berry-inspired "It's Only Rock'n'Roll", the band delved into covers territory, beginning with The Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", followed by "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love". The first time I heard that one live was when Solomon Burke played outside the Black Prince in Bexley when I was still at school. Up on the balcony, I noticed Andrew Lloyd Webber having trouble with the "you-you-you" chorus, despite the early warning from Mick that he expected something from the expensive seats. With the brass section relishing the workout, Mick tackled Otis Redding's "That's How Strong My Love Is" in the favoured key of B flat, so the parts sounded really fat. It was getting more Stax than Stones, and with "Going to a Go Go", the old Miracles disco workout, it was four covers in a row, surely a record.

Earlier in the evening, the seldom-heard "Hand of Fate" was a nice outing, as was "No Expectations", with Mick playing an old Gibson acoustic and Ronnie Wood accompanying with the acoustic slide guitar across his knees, just as Hank Williams would have had. Keith came to the mic, and the volume dropped down for his rendition of "The Nearness of You"; Charlie Watts' drumkit could finally be heard in its full dynamic range. "I learnt all my licks from Charlie," said Wildcat Will, Beth Orton's drummer, who stood next to me, nodding in time.

Mick must have been dusting his old cassettes down, as he sprung back on stage with another Redding tune, "Can't Turn You Loose", before the old five-string Fender Tele came back out for Keith to deliver the staccato opening of "Honky Tonk Women" - we were back on familiar territory and heading for home. Like a praying mantis, he prowled around the back of Mick in "Start Me Up", freeze-framing poses that come down the line from Chuck Berry and that he has developed into a weird ballet, while the animated singer in front motors on. With the sub-chorus, "You make a grown man cry", reaching a crescendo, and the backing voices of Lisa Fisher and Bernard Fowler punching across the guitar-lines, the band were really warming up and enjoying themselves, though some people in the balcony looked as though they might have been watching England playing cricket, such was their enthusiasm. In the beginning, I guess, you have the real fans; then, later, others come along to see what all the fuss is about, but don't add hugely to the atmosphere, shout out or dance. Back when it all began, we were all dancing all the time, except when there wasn't room. That's why people liked Mick: because he encouraged them to move and didn't stand like a statue - or Liam Gallagher - at the microphone.

Things have moved on since then, of course; there were 13 musicians on stage at the Astoria, of them only the four key members non-American. Special mention must be made here of the long-serving pianist and Hammond-player Chuck Leavell, whose hand can be seen above the others, cueing changes and endings, and of Bobby Keys, the aptly named horn-player, who has hung on in there - some achievement after the excesses of such road tours as Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs" escapade.

I heard from a roadie that the sound-check was excellent: laid-back and musical. I should have got down earlier for that one, where the band play for themselves without an audience.

L&A Thanks for the great review, Monkey Woman !

Gazza Anyone who says this wasnt a great concert is just spoiled by seeing too many shows or tone deaf.

This was the best Stones show I've ever seen. They were fucking brilliant. The whole band were on fire even if Ronnie was turned down a bit compared to Keith (although from where I was standing Woody was on good enough form) Keith was especially on fire and playing his ass off and at one point during the solo on "Tumbling dice" he was so into it he was pulling a facial expression that looked from the waist up like he was in the midst of the best blow job of his life. the sound - as at all the London shows - was very good with the guitars up in the mix and leavell down. Someone's obviously been reading the boards!

Jagger's voice sounded fine to me. Ive read and heard it went a bit. I cant say I noticed any noticeable deterioration.

I believe there was a 11.30 curfew and they were a bit late getting started (9.45 or so) and they packed 19 songs into an hour and three quarters, but there were no LONG tracks like "midnight rambler" or "CYHMK".

Too many highlights to mention, but after opening with JJ Flash they then proceeded to play 13 songs in a row that werent played at Twickenham so I got to hear several songs I'd never seen them play before. "thats how strong my love is" was a personal highlight (Mick came down the little catwalk and pointed to L'wren Scott when singin' it), but "Worried about you", "Nearness of you" and all the soul stuff ran it close. Even the standards at the end were played nice and raw. Shit,I even enjoyed "Start me up" for the first time in about 13 years. Ive no complaints.

Too bad about no Mick taylor but I think most of you have read the supposed reasons by now. Suffice to say, when I told Gerardo on the phone he was scheduled to play that WAS the plan at that time.

There were no tickets sold on the day of the show (something which only happened before at roseland). However, the Astoria GAVE five tickets away to some folks who had camped outside for 3 days and to one guy who'd bought a fake ticket off a scalper. Too many celebs and hangers on and relatives I guess to make it likely there would be many tickets available on the day. It showed because I thought the audience upstairs were pretty lame. The venue is tiny. God knows how that place could possibly hold 1600. If that catwalk was any longer Jagger could easily have walked from the stage to the bar and got himself a pint. Security was the tightest Ive ever seen for a show in the UK. Body searches, metal detectors, had to empty pockets etc. I managed to sneak a pocket camera in in my sock but it got confiscated after about 5 songs!!

Strange_Stray_Cat What more is there to tell about the Astoria...

For me, it was not the best club gig I've seen. They opened good; Live with me rocked. But all went wrong after the band intro's. They like rished thru the last songs. Too bad. Anyway, I was glad to be there.

Strange_Stray_Cat Where is your Twick review?
09-03-03 10:41 PM
sirmoonie Might have been better than Roseland but, by far, Astoria was the most fun of all of the shows I saw. The crowd was absolutely incredible considering we were jammed in there like Sunday fish mash. The guy behind me was singing liking a Welsh banshee hunter and knew every friggin' word to every song, even the falsetto to Worried About You. After about 3 or 4 songs, me and him had our arms around each other, swaying around, screaming slurred Jagbonics like a pair of true London pubbers. Which is pretty much what we were in. The Astoria is tiny! I was in the last human row and I swear, with a full bladder, I could have shorted out Ronnie's amp from where I stood. Thats how close I was. Thats how strong my piss is.

Turned out my new bestest friend in the world was the head groundskeeper at Twickenham stadium, and he had been comped two Astoria ticks for his superlative job a few nights before. Saw him outside the show later on and yacked Stones for awhile. He first saw them in '66 in London and "God, oive luved the boys ever since." Cheers KK if you are reading this! (I informed him of our little society here).

Cool meeting everyone at Sticky Fingers! Always a pleasure meeting board mates.

For those who care, Astie highlights:

Hand of Fate - seen twice now, both times close to the album version and just excellent.

No Expectations - Awesome. My wife's fav of the evening.

Worried about you - Mick on the piano, singing the falsetto, just too cool. Loved it!

Check it - these ducks right here, all in a row
Ain’t too proud to beg
Everybody Needs Somebody To Love
Thats how strong my love is
Going to a go go
Nearness of You
Before they make me run
Can’t turn you loose

Fuck me! Fucking incredible! Best string of songs I have ever seen by anyone ever. Even in make believe. And the best one? Uh...the last two. That was such a cool version of BTMMR, I almost rammed my head through the floor. Gotta hear the boot on that! Everyone agree who saw it? Holy moly. Can't turn you loose - beautiful as well.

I agree with most that they did start rushing after that, probably because of the curfew (why can't the Stones say fuck you to the curfew? They are the Stones after all.) I never detected Mick losing his voice at all, but I sure had by then.

Satisfaction at the end was probably the most bland I have ever seen them. Energy completely gone, they probably were drained by then, I know I was. But thats nitpicking. Astoria, in their hometown, in 2003, has to go down as one of their best shows ever. What a band!

I end my Stones career on a bang. And with the wife all charged up from watching Mick running around all night, well later on it was ditto figu-literalo as they say in Latin.

That could be all she wrote....

kahoosier I am with gazza and sirmoonie, this show was so far above what I had seen at the Enmore. I never detected Mick loosing his voice, and I was up pretty damn close and think I would have noticed him "lip-synching" over Bernard's singing as others have accused. The energy was incredible. The sound was great and the band were really enjoying themselves. It amazes me that when one critic on the boards accuses Ronnie of sloppiness (Slide on No Expectations), his band mates, both Mick and Keith, ran over and hugged him after the performance. If its ok with Mick and Keith, its all right by me!!!
09-05-03 12:17 PM
sirmoonie I though No Expectations was great, sloppy or not. I don't even know what sloppy means. All I know is that Ronnie had all those cool notes that makes the Beggar's version such a standout. He was looking mighty pleased with his bad ass self when he was done.
09-05-03 03:40 PM
Gazza great review. Glad to see other people as enthusiastic about this great show as I was. I know what I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears.

and yes...that magical 40 mins or so of the Rolling Stones Soul and R&B Revue was musical perfection. The best sequence of any of the thirty Stones concerts I've seen to date. Unforgettable
09-07-03 03:34 AM
coowouters And again,

It was certainly worth it!
When going to a show, I like to watch all bandmembers while letting the music "soak" in. That's when you see all these little details like Mick fumbling around with his transmitter, Ronnie gestuing that something might be wrong with his slide guitar, Charlie smiling at the others, Ronnie getting a quick nod from Keith while playing on the slide, and so on.

I had number 148 in the queue, and once I was in, I had to go the the boys room fast. For those who went there, it was downstairs and there was a door garded by a large security, but it was an urgent matter so I slipped by before he knew what happened, but within a second I noticed that I wasn't in the toilet, but backstage Needless to say that within a second they grabbed me and (in a friendly matter BTW)escorted me out. So I had an extra reason to go to the toilet

When I got back on the floor, I was somewhere 4th or 5th row death center,so with my 1.90 meters no problem to see everything. Remembering Vredenburg, I took off my jacket to bind it around my waist, so I wouldn't have to do that when the Stones started.

But people behind me were shoving, pushing and so on, so I finished the show somewhere in row 12. Well, 12th row is not bad at all at the Astoria, but when I saw all the pricks and prickettes, that had been pushing, stand almost motionless in front of me while the Stones were on, I regretted to be a nice person and giving way.

Lucky enough, I had the pleasure of meeting some very nice REAL Stones fans at Sticky Fingers and in other places!!!

MarthaMyDear I never wrote a "proper" review so I think I'm just going to give it a shot and maybe some decent soul out there might appreciate it!!! lol.................... If not, sorry to take-up the fucking space but too bad for you!!! ROTFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P

Anyways, well, after seeing the AMAZING show last year at the Wiltern Theatre here in "Los Angeles, California" (Mick accent ala in Far Away Eyes), I was MORE than beaming with anticipation just thinking about seeing them again almost a year later at the Astoria Theatre (yes, I am spoiled and I do know that!!! lol.............. :P )!!! Luckily, the day's activities worked-out to where I didn't have to wait in line all day, unlike at the Wiltern Theatre, but I DID get to be as close as the third person back from the stage inbetween Mick and Keith (more towards Keith, etc.!!!) at the Wiltern and dance onstage during Soloman Burke's EXCELLENT performance, which didn't suck!!! lol.............. :P )... Anyways, so I entered the small theatre and QUICKLY ran up to as close to the stage as I could get, which was by then about 10-15 people back from the stage, if i am remembering this correctly!!! None-the-less, it was pretty, fricking EXCELLENT for having not waited in line all, fricking day, I will say THAT!!! lol.............. :P The opening band was actually pretty, fricking great and I enjoyed listening to them but it was starting to get hotter and hotter where I stood and had to keep a paper fan going during their set and up until the Stones went on... lol.............. :P

Anyways, so FINALLY the Stones come on and the crowd went WILD and I was feeling EXTREMELY claustraphobic getting smooshed and having bad Public Image Limited and punk rock shows flashbacks where I used to get caught in slamming pits, etc., so I got myself OUTTA THERE and more towards Keith' sside (which actually worked out possibly better view-wise in the end, so COOL!!! lol.............. :P )!!! I don't know where that report of Mick having lost his voice towards the end of this show originated from but I didn't hear it ALL!!! This band was on FIRE and the three shows I saw in England (Twickenham, which was a HELL of alot of fun and an EXCELLENT SHOW and the other one being the first Wembley show which was EXCELLENT, also!!!) were just AMAZING!!! I just can't complain about any of them!!! I'm sorry!!! lol.............. :P EVERYONE I met in England was nice (people I knew, like Stonesdoug, etc., and people I met for the first time, also)!!! No fucking drama and no fucking headaches (just feet aches!!! lol.............. :P )!!! GOOD!!! lol.............. :P Of course, we all get tired and cranky from time to time but that is normal and I am no, fucking exception... Pardon my French, as Keith says!!! lol.............. :P But, I digress and return to the fricking Stones... lol.............. :P

Anyways, so I think I should say that the person to watch THIS evening was DEFINITELY Keith who was just giving the most OUTRAGEOUS facial expressions known to mankind!!! lol.............. :P God, he just looks downright EVIL and villianous (is that a word or did I just misspell it?!?!?! lol.............. :P )!!! lol.............. :P So, with the music being just AMAZING and just having a frickin' BLAST watching what I consider to be the most entertaing band ever to WATCH, also (as in funny and sexy, of course, etc.!!! lol.............. :P ), it was a night I'll never forget!!! One highlight, as Monkey Woman definitely described perfectly, was when Mick put Lisa's hand on his crouch!!! lol.............. :P They just need to do that more often 'cause it's funny... Plain and simple... lol.............. :P And, maybe I'm sick 'cause I just like to watch, I guess!!! ROTFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. :P Just kidding!!! lol.............. :P Maybe not!!! lol.............. :P It was fun dancing along with and watching Blondie, Bernard, and Lisa, also, which is now what I always do when I see the Stones (dance along with those three, etc.)!!! Everyone was great to watch but, unfortunately, I wasn't able to see Charlie at ALL from where I was standing but I definitely saw him at the other shows, so that's ok. (and getting that autographed Charlie ticket from littleredrooster wasn't so, fricking bad, either!!! lol.............. :P HE!!! HE!!! Thank you SO MUCH, lrr!!! )...

Anyways, so this was a show I'll remember forever, of course, and I just hope they plan on doing these club shows again in the future 'cause it was such a treat and extremeley special to me!!! Leaving the club was weird with everyone pushing and shoving WAY more frantically than I thought was necessary... I had a fricking Great White flashback which didn't help matters!!! lol.............. :P But, made it outside ok.!!! lol.............. :P Then, out into the city at night to grab a meal at Burger King (classy!!! lol.............. :P ) and hit the hay... Next concert, the first Wembley show, which was EXCELLENT, also, but we all know that!!! lol.............. :P Oh, how can they not be, is the question?!?!?!

Anyways, that is not thhe most thought-out review, etc., but it's been awhile sinse that show so if it sucks, so what... ROTFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P I just thhought I'd post something, is all!!! lol.............. :P Martha, maybe you're enjoying it!!! CRACKING-UP!!!!!!!!!! HE!!! HE!!! ROTFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P OK.!!! lol.............. :P At least I can crack myself up!!! Frick it!!! lol.............. :P

Anyways, that's all, take care, PEACE, and DO ROCK ON!!! PEACE!!!
