Ian - seriously, son - follow the case, Townshend's own personal background and have a clue about how the law works in this country before shooting off about something you dont know anything about. Its in the archives from a couple of weeks ago. My life is too short to waste breath arguing about it again.
(edit : here you go - http://www.novogate.com/board/968/A.../225517-1.html. jostorm's post on page 2 sums it up)
secondly - whats the link between writing a tongue in cheek (no pun intended) gay love song in 1980 and being a paedo? None as far as I can see. David Bowie wrote plenty,as has Mick Jagger - see where you're going here?
Thirdly - its a fucking POP SONG. Not a testament or a sermon from the mount that has to be taken literally or subjected to absured levels of over analysis. Just because he wrote 'Tommy' doesnt make him deaf, dumb and blind and writing 'Quadrophenia' doesnt make him a mod.
Fourthly - wheres the gay (or 'suspect' in any way) lyrics in 'Real Good Lookin Boy' ?
And yeah, sure, having just been cleared of child porn charges, the first thing a guy like Townshend, who is obviously anxious to restore his reputation, is going to do immediately afterwards to is to record and release a song expressing a desire to have under age sex. Its so fucking obvious isnt it? Works every time

Gazza,
For someone trying to clear his reputation as a petaphile Pete Townsend sure as hell isn't doing a very good job of it by naming his next written release "Real Good Looking Boy"....call me crazy, and I don't care what the song is about.
Secondly,
Rough Boys was not as toungue and cheek as you may think. "Gonna Get Inside You", "I wanna Bite and Kiss You", "I wanna Buy you Leather". Ok when the The Rolling Stones When The Whip comes Down is a story with a tongue and cheek lines. Rough Boys is not any type of story but more an opinion. Sounds more like "Toungues and Cheeks" to me.
Lastly,
The dude didn't break any laws OK I understand that. BUT it is all still quite suspect in my mind. I am not saying the guy has been with little boys. What I am saying is our Petey does have some very interstering preferences of the male persuation. Maybe it includes younger boys Alla "Rough Boys", maybe not. But one thing is for sure the guy is open about his sexuality. Or at least has been in the past. Yes Gazza, Pete Townsend DOES like men.
If alot of this does not add up to you I'm sorry. We do not see eye to eye on it. But please remeber that my thought s on this is no blind accusation that has never surfaced before. Gazza, Give me a break here. Come on this is an on going thing with him. For Crimony's sake it is all pointing to a certain side of the fence. If Pete doesn't want to be accused of liking boys.
A. Don't write songs like Rough Boys
B. Don't openly admit you think of yourself as a woman
C. Watch what sites you visit, no matter what you're there
for.
D. Last: Don't name singles or write songs based on a "Real
good looking boy"... ESPECIALLY releasing it first after\
the Whole Child Pornography thing.
Fuck Man. I am certainly no red necked finger pointer but the dude does have tendencies. We all know that. And he sure isn't hiding them as well as he should, or some would like.
Why do people always look for the most un-obvious instead of just taking it for what it is. Like I said, if this was an incident or two. Well hey, I may not even be thinking along those lines. After what Pete has told us, what he writes songs about, the investigation, now this song title....
As I said before, Don't always look for a loop hole. Some times you gotta take it for what it is.
Ian

Funnily enough, the next Who single is believed to be called "Toungues (sic) and Cheeks". |

Ronnie Richards |
Daltrey has gotten a very Warren Zevon-esque quality to his voice - which is, of course, a good thing. But sadly, Real Good Looking Boy is not a very good song.

Fuck me..its Mr Super Song Analyst. What is your problem with a songwriter writing a song like that? That or whatever his (legal) preferences are doesnt make me uneasy in the slightest. Quite why you get on some kind of moral high horse is beyond me
quote: Lastly,

are you sure you do?
quote: BUT it is all still quite suspect in my mind.
Those last 3 words are the key, here
quote: I am not saying the guy has been with little boys. What I am saying is our Petey does have some very interstering preferences of the male persuation.
Being a homosexual/bisexual is the same as being a paedophile now?? Hmmmm..interesting theory. Had he been investigating child porn sites involving underage girls (and maybe he was..I dont know) would you have equated the two activities the same way?
quote: Maybe it includes younger boys Alla "Rough Boys", maybe not. But one thing is for sure the guy is open about his sexuality. Or at least has been in the past. Yes Gazza, Pete Townsend DOES like men.
and the problem with that is what, exactly? 'Men' is not the same as 'children'
quote: Fuck Man. I am certainly no red necked finger pointer
you want to ask the audience on that? You seem a tad too overly obsessed with someone's sexuality and unable to see the difference with that and something thats illegal

Ian - you got a lot of facts wrong, and most of the conclusions and inferences you draw don't make any sense. Its all been posted and debunked back when Pete got in trouble - go look that stuff up and get back to me.
===========================
Real Good Looking Boy sounds a bit like Time Is Passing - it is classic Who songwriting and sound, not a great song - just a good one, but if you're a fan, its golden to hear it after all these years. Blows doors on anything our friends have been doing lately. |

"The 28-year-old traveler was tall, with rough hands, a chiseled jaw and unforgettable, deep-set, melancholy eyes. He arrived in town, his worldly possessions in two battered suitcases, and inquired at a general store about buying some bedding. But the price was far beyond his budget. The strikingly handsome 23-year-old merchant took pity on the man and invited him into his own bed, free of charge, which happened to be just upstairs. The traveler inspected the bed and, looking into the merchant's sparkling blue eyes, agreed on the spot. For the next four years the two men shared that bed along with their most private fears and desires.
If this sounds like the opening of a homoerotic dime-store novel whose subsequent scenes feature fiery loins and ecstatic eruptions, hold your panting. The year is 1837, the place Springfield, Ill., and the leading men none other than our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, and his lifelong friend Joshua Speed..."

No, its more suburban professionals/office workers. Not a bad place at all. I swilled there on Friday afternoon - pre-airport tankage. Talked to some nice women for a bit, those southern accents are sexy. |

Gazza,
I am not on a moral high horse of any kind.
I am not obsessed with anyones sexuality un-less I am sleeping with her, or want to sleep with her.
I like the song "Rough Boys", actually, but don't share the opinion the song presents.
and NO just because someone is GAY does not make me hate them or think they are a petaphile. I am sure Mick has dabbled and look how I feel about The Rolling Stones.
Hell, my very favorite movie of all time is The Rocky Horror Picture Show and I will tell anyone that. No, I don't par-take in those activities but I do think the movie is halairious, not to be taken seriously, and is a complete classic with a deeper meaning than just some silly queer like over-hyped film. And The Who are my second favorite band of all time for "Pete's sake"(Pun intended)...
However, I am calling it like I see it with Petey.
I just am real enough to call a duck a duck and I'm not so obstinant I can not see the forest because of all the trees in the way.
I guess we don't see eye to eye on this one. I won't try and change your mind. I never will any way. Also we both like The music of the Who and Pete happens to be an idol of mine.
He is rough, tough, and has a great junky guitar sound that noboby eles has in the exact way he produces sound. Also his style of playing is unique. Not a real good solo player but it still sounds qunique and fitting.
But I am not gonna defend my beleif in that the dude likes younger, tougher looking than feminine, fags. And that last sentence is not be be taken in an offense, because I mean no offense but feel it is a more fitting way of putting it in this context.
