Excuse me, landlubber?
My dear friend, this is not a good song. I really did listen with an open mind. It's tedious and the whole "good looking boy" thing is scrotum shriveling coming from the mind of Pete Towmsend. It really is.

So - so.
But I admit something is better than nothing. With a little better song writing and a less easy going production they could have some pretty decent stuff again.

I disagree - its old school Townshend songwriting - sounds like a reject from the Let'S See Action days (I realize it isn't) - Who riffs all over that song. And the story is cool, Pete's recognition of Elvis at a young age - we all have our heroes.
I like the tune. But I am biased, The Who is digged by me. |
|
time is on my side |
same setlist blues????
Just went over the setlist for The Who on their European tour & a couple of things grabbed my attention.
(1) The Who have pulled the plug on the mini opera set Wire & Glass (they had been playing 6 songs from Wire & Glass for the first three shows but for the last six or seven shows they are not playing it).
(2) As of now, The Who are not playing any new songs live. One would have to conclude there has to be a reason. Were the new songs not going over well live??? For that matter, has anyone heard Wire & Glass??? Is it any good???? It seems the only reason to pull it so early in the tour is that The Who themselves were unhappy with the music.
(3) I know people here complain about the STONES playing the same setlist night after night but the last six or seven shows by The Who make the Stones look unpredictable by comparison. |
|
sirmoonie |
I too wonder about Wire and Glass. Anyone? I could not find.
As far as Who shows being predictable, you are gonged, man. No such thing EVEN when they play the predetermined set list, and even when half are dead. |

I agree it is some what older School Townsend writing (still not back as far as I would like but hey)....just not incredible writing is what I am saying.

"Wire and Glass" is out next week and is getting airplay at the minute (surpisingly). havent heard it myself
I'd imagine the lack of new songs over the last few shows may be something to do with the fact that theyve generally been playing festival gigs, so its not yer standard "'Oo crowd"
Arent they playing the T In the Park festival in Scotland today? The BBC have been showing that festival this weekend, so I would guess theie set will be televised live this evening

From the Chairman :
" The show has settled into a more traditional shape as fans will see from our set lists published in the News sections. At Leeds we found the show we had put together - that included Wire & Glass and Cry if You Want - didn't work with larger crowds, so we may bring back that stuff at our smaller shows further down the road. That is a great tune.
Nice video too.
I have seen a few Who shows over the years. Each one kicked ass.
But w/o Ox...man, I just don't know---------------
And Pete, well, recent events easily lend this tune an entirely new and rather uncomfortable context...
Strange days indeed.

Dudette, the "recent events" have been sussed out to the extreme for anyone who actually cares. If you know what you are talking about, there is nothing sinister about the title Real Good Looking Boy by The Who. Suggesting otherwise is just a prop job here on RO. |

Not by a long shot Sirmoonie.
A. Pete already has openly revealed that he is not just a man, but a women as well and does not want to be classified as just a man...nuff said right.
B. look at Rough Boys, and notice today how homo-sexual the song really is. Back then most of us missed it. I was too young to get it.
Lastly: Pete was under investigation for going to Porn sites with young boys. Sure, he said it was for a written work he is doing or some other jive....
My question is do YOU feel that was legitimate?
Besides all that his very next single is titled "real good looking boy".....
Even if Pete was NEVER associated with homosexuality at all this title would be some what strange. But I would let it fly if I would of never known any other instances. Point is the guy talkes about, or writes about good looking dudes, or rough dudes in leather he wants to bite and kiss, he classifies him self as a women as well as a man. He has went (for what ever reason) to boy porn sites and was investigated for it... doesn't this tell you something. It really is not rocket surgery.
If this was a one time occurance or there was no previous matters I would probably not think much about it and would try taking it for what it is.
And I LOVE THE WHO like crazy! I will be the first to admit that.
*But this is Pete Townsend we are talking about here...some times, you just gotta do the math instead of insisting on looking the other way.

"new" context? How come? The 'investigation' (already discussed here ad nauseam with Townshend cleared of any wrongdoing, and his innocence acknowledged by anyone who has the slightest clue in how the law works with regard to that subject in the UK) occurred some considerable time before that song was written
besides, I cant see how acknowledging that when you were growing up, you were never going to look as good as Elvis makes you a potential paedophile..
By that yardstick, I guess I should have been in jail before I'd reached puberty.

The yardstick on RGLB is that Mr Daltrey sings it. He would not sing anything that he didnt feel comfortable with,as has happened in the past(a good exanple being However much I booze,he felt it was too personal to Pete)
Last week in Beaulieu (getting the hang of my camera at last)

I will Gazza, but first you guys got to open your eyes bro.
Sure the song may be directed towards Elvis. But come now.
And as far as the investigation goes yes, he was found innocent. But it isn't like he never went to those sites.
Remember OJ Simspson was also found innocent. Does that mean he had no part in the murders?
Geez Pete wrote a song about young boys in leather he wanted to bite and kiss. The dude is pretty much an open homosexual (forgive me Pete), Child Pronography investigation, Strange song titles, ....Could it all be coincidence? the truth is so obvious. Sure the song is not REALLY describing a younger boy he wants to date. I realize that. What I am saying is our Pete has got good looking men on the brain too much to not be scrutinized for it.
Let's Get Real.

Ian - seriously, son - follow the case, Townshend's own personal background and have a clue about how the law works in this country before shooting off about something you dont know anything about. Its in the archives from a couple of weeks ago. My life is too short to waste breath arguing about it again.
(edit : here you go - http://www.novogate.com/board/968/Archives/07%2D08%2D2006/225517-1.html. jostorm's post on page 2 sums it up)
secondly - whats the link between writing a tongue in cheek (no pun intended) gay love song in 1980 and being a paedo? None as far as I can see. David Bowie wrote plenty,as has Mick Jagger - see where you're going here?
Thirdly - its a fucking POP SONG. Not a testament or a sermon from the mount that has to be taken literally or subjected to absured levels of over analysis. Just because he wrote 'Tommy' doesnt make him deaf, dumb and blind and writing 'Quadrophenia' doesnt make him a mod.
Fourthly - wheres the gay (or 'suspect' in any way) lyrics in 'Real Good Lookin Boy' ?
And yeah, sure, having just been cleared of child porn charges, the first thing a guy like Townshend, who is obviously anxious to restore his reputation, is going to do immediately afterwards to is to record and release a song expressing a desire to have under age sex. Its so fucking obvious isnt it? Works every time

Egad! I know the tune was written long before the more recent events regarding child porn that plagued Pete...
That was my point - since that investigation there has been, and always will be, a cloud over Pete T. Old songs that were viewed in one context, now will be looked at in another, likely at the expense of Pete's current reputation.
I for one prefer to keep it as his ode, in part, to the celebrity of Elvis...young E was indeed a very good looking boy who helped inspire a legion of would-be rockers who redefined modern culture in the 60's.
As to the actual child porn allegations...I don't know. There is some demonstrative evidence to suggest the claim against him, though I am more comfortable believing he was simpy being very stupid... |
