Petey is right though on some level anyway, and I respect him even more for having said that ( Petey I still love you man!) ...although I would say they are neck and neck..but songwriting is not a contest...the talented artists are unique and certainly the world is a much prettier place for having BOTH of these talents sharing their visions with us. :-)

Cakey......I have missed you! When shall we greet?

BTW, the Pepsi Can looks shabby and unidentifiable unlike your far-out, space-age Qwest Center.

We couldn't even find the sign for the Pepsi Can once we got to it.....and the colors are totally Dr. Pepper.

I haven't even told you all about the Pearl Jam Petty shows that we caught on the 1st and 2nd.....:-)

Well...let me just say that the highlight blew me away completely....

Petty ended night 2 with his standard ender "American Girl"...I thought it was over until Chris says that he sees someone is putting up lyric sheets onstage and just then Pearl Jam takes the stage and they all break into....wanna guess....I was chanting his name BEFORE the song started...LOL AND my taper our very own Travelin' Man Records was in the audience (he SURPRISED us and came at the last minute)!!!!!

Which means eventually I'll have this show to pass on to anyone who wants a copy!

...Oh what was the song?!?.....

Why.....it was....

Rainy Day Women #12 & 35!!!

Joey?!

Why is the song named that????

LOL

I had to tell someone...!

Anyone here a fan?

;-)

I'm on a loooooow budget!

I'm a big fan as well. The first time I ever saw a show at Madison Square Garden was a Kinks show (a very long time ago). I will be at the SF show as well looking forward to it!

Good going monkey_man! I also saw The Kinks in either 1977, 1978 or 1979 in Cincinnati, OH. I have to look into the archives to see when the hell this show happened.

You will dig the SF show! :-)

I have a suggestion pd. Take Ray a gift...a flower (your daughter could give it to him) heck I can't think of anything cool, but I know you can think of something to take to him. I didn't see anyone give Ray anything whem he signed for us, so that came to mind as an afterthought.

LMK if you go for this. Good luck!

I've also ordered a few others (can't remember the titles at the moment.....hey it's Saturday night..tea time) through my music club...but I couldn't wait. Had to find the original version of "Victoria". Gawd I dig that tune.

UGot2Rollme I saw him in Berlin in April. Great show, 25 songs, good band but I missed Dave on harmonies (and, on some songs, guitar). Question for Martha : did he have a young lady join him for harmonies on a few songs? He did in Berlin, wasn't clear who she was - seemed like kind of a tryout. Hope she passed.

I've also met Ray at a book signing, told him how his song "Days" helped me through the death of a good friend. He then took my hand, shook it and said thank you. I know he can be cranky, but he was a pure gent that day (Storyteller tour).

Long live Ray, and the KINKS!

I have a CD of that Berlin show, and it's brilliant. In addition to all the gems in the setlist just posted, that night he also did This Is Where I Belong and Autumn Almanac.

Ray was probably so sulky the day I met him was probably simply because in-store signings must be real drag. That night at the show he was charming as can be.

Speaking of Victoria, which is indeed a great tune, it took me decades to realize it owes a large debt (but does not rip off, as some contend) to Canned Heat's Going Up the Country, both in the music and vocal delivery.

In answer to your question...Yes the blond female singer was with him and came out to duet only on a few songs. I missed Dave too.

Um, considering Pete has admitted to ripping off the Kinks, and that the Kinks came first, your statement is incredibly misguided. When you take into consideration the songwriting of Ray Davies from Face to Face (1966) through Muswell Hillbillies (1971), you have a body of work that is very much comparable quality to the output of the Stones and the Beatles during the same period. Other than the early singles (which again, the Kinks came first), I don't really see a valid comparison with the Who at all.
10th July 2006 11:21 AM
jb Kinks, imo, not even close to one of the all time greats..A fun band whose time in the spotlight was overshadowd by other bands...They are not in my top 50-but if you love them, more power to you. They are no Who or Rlooing Stones. More like Blue Oyster Cult.
