albert I find it shocking how some people on this board react on the good will of a lot of people and artists to organise and perform for the poor people of Africa.

Who are you to think they do this for no other reasons but themselves?

It's a free world and you have the right on your own opinion, but I can't ignore the fact that people are dying while they could have a live, can you?

Oh, and I do think the Stones should have been there !
July 4th, 2005 07:56 AM
glencar They did it for multiple reasons. Not everything was done altruistically. Don't be so naive! Look at the chart positions. It was a pleasant but rather dubious idea. Let's meld our minds & hope the G8 send more of our tax $ to Africa? Yuh.

I'd rather see them send tax money to Africa than on blowing up comets or non existant enemies. If you're gonna waste money, waste it on something worthwhile.

Ten Thousand Motels Another no show. Of course the Pope has other duties I'm sure.

THE POPE REFUSED TO ATTEND LIVE 8

Live 8 organiser SIR BOB GELDOF asked POPE BENEDICT XVI to appear at a British Live 8 concert but only received a signed photo and refusal letter in return.

Geldof wanted the newly-elected head of the Catholic church to lend his support to the Make Poverty History campaign - and was shocked by Benedict XVI's casual snub.

He says, "I got back in touch with him and said I never wanted a signed photograph, I just wanted him to come to London or Edinburgh this week."

jb Some people become emotional when they view this events as if they can make a bit of difference....it is understandable as the music makes people feel like they are larger than life..when Pink Flamingos came on, you can imagine how their fans felt after all these years..many must have cried...this is particularly enhanced by use of drugs.....the sad reality is that absent a compelling interests to the G-8, only lip service will be done....................we(Stones fans) gave up on that after Altamont...and so did the band......

texile saturday afternoon, about 200, 000 people (exceeding the crowd in hyde park) showed up in edinburgh, scotland to protest, listen to speeches and listen as the issues of global poverty were addressed...
billy bragg, yes - bianca, african activists and musicians (yeah - REAL LIVE PEOPLE FROM AFRICA!..imagine that!) spoke, criticized the imf, world bank, expressed different resolutions - this was a genuine political rally with specific concerns....
the event had been planned months before geldof got a fire under his ass - he then hastily decided to hold his concert on the same day.....can i ask you guys this:
if he wanted to contribute to a real debate on the real issues, why wasn't he there, with his influence, why wasn't live 8 planned on a different day...the timing of live 8 was deliberate and therefore seems a bit self-serving;
i respect anyone standing up for something they believe in - so i don't diminish all the motives, but sometimes rocks stars really do think they're somehow exalted.
i'm not so cynical that i think geldof and bono are insincere, but i do believe the complex issues of economic justice and global poverty become simplified by lofty-headed rock stars with good intentions. if live 8 has a positive impact - more awareness etc....that's great, but some of you act like geldof and bono are above debate or criticism....
July 4th, 2005 12:53 PM

Geldof didnt WANT to do another concert. As late as the end of May he was still denying it was going to happen. He was asked to put one together and did so. Read the news archives.

I sure as fuck dont think anyone is beyond criticism. But the other extreme where people get pilloried for wanting to make people's lives a bit easier is nonsensical beyond belief, considering where some of the criticism is coming from (yourself excepted - you at least make some valid constructive opinions, unlike some of the usual suspects)

Logistics would have a lot to do with when a concert is planned. Realistically and practically it has to be a weekend and it had to be at a time to coincide with the G8 summit. When would you suggest - on a rainy tuesday in August?

Wait, you just said "Bono" and "good" in the same sentence.

An epiphany!

Whatever next? You'll be changing your mind and saying the Stones are great again after rubbishing them as "wankers" and "an embarrassment" for the last 18 months...

glencar The World Bank is changing its tune in regard to future projexts, texile. Instead of humungous projects which benefit the few, they are planning on lending smaller loans for those micro-businesses which many seem to love. You can thank noted neocon Paul Wolfowitz.

As stated above, Bono is a good person & he & his wife Ali put their money where there mouths are. They started that "Edun" company which will sell African made clothes. That's more productive than any one-off wanker concert could ever be. This concert was the sonic equivalent of Richie Gere's mass mind meld to China to respect Tibet's human rights. Enjoyable but ultimately useless.

It's done all the time. This concert does not change that. To pretend it does is stupidity of the sort that is counter-productive to the efficient operating of human society; hence people's objections as expressed best herein by Corgi.

texile that's true, glencar - i like bono although my recent posts would suggest otherwise - i even toyed with the idea of denying my southern baptist roots by converting to catholism (impossible - southern baptist indoctrination scars the left-brain tissue). i'll never forget the opening sound of sunday, bloody, sunday to my complacent adolescent ears...it was, along with the clash, the defining sound of my youthfull idealism and stupidity.
i just think that the live 8 media machine smothered the real questions but that could be debated forever. We're still not sure if live aid made a real, tangible difference.

glencar From thisislondon.com:
Battle of the backstage egos
By Nicole Lampert, Daily Mail, Showbusiness Editor
4 July 2005

While they preached charity and love on stage at Live8, the celebrity backstage area was all about warring egos.
Major-league musicians were crammed, along with a host of celebrities major and minor, into an area of only 150 square feet - leading to the inevitable trodden-on toes and bruised feelings.

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY, who both opened and closed Live8, made sure every one knew exactly whose show it really was by continually strolling up and down the backstage area with his entourage of six in tow.

Wife HEATHER was filming the whole thing, and boasted that she was planning to hawk her fly-on-the-wall programme to networks around the world in six months.

'I will get it syndicated worldwide,' she said. 'I have contacts with all the networks.' Her plans were dealt a blow, however, two hours before the show ended when she was told that she had to stop filming as it was against the Live8 rules for anyone to video any part of the event.

Like a royal visitor, Sir Paul went to see all the stars in their dressing rooms. But the uneasiness between his designer daughter STELLA and his wife was obvious to all, particularly when Stella walked off the side of the stage during the performance by her best pal MADONNA after Heather and Sir Paul came to stand next to her.

And when the McCartneys came face to face with the BECKHAMS it was always going to be interesting to see the result.

After praising Sir Paul on his opening number (which she was not actually there for), VICTORIA managed to infuriate the former Beatle by running off to hug an old friend. There were uncomfortable smiles all round because DAVID did not know how to explain his wife's disappearing act to Sir Paul. When Victoria finally returned, Sir

Paul told her through gritted teeth: 'Oh, well, if she's more important than me ...'

After a few brief words the power couples parted and Sir Paul was overheard telling a lackey: 'That was nice and natural.'

Later on, eyebrows were raised at how quickly an incredibly skinny Victoria, who was wearing a pair of her new own-label jeans, appeared to be necking down the free wine. She has been pictured looking unusually well-refreshed several times over the last few weeks.

Ever keen to watch her figure, she did not, however, sample any of the food put out for the celebrities, which included lobster, caviar, doughnuts and Ben & Jerry's ice-cream.

The Beckhams, who were there with their manager SIMON FULLER, were the only stars to be surrounded by bodyguards while they were inside the food tent - they had two as well as two lackeys - but their entourage was relatively small compared with that of SNOOP DOGG. He had no fewer than 15 muscly minders.

SIR ELTON JOHN, who flew to perform in Dublin after completing his set, had a mere five bodyguards with him, but they took their duties seriously enough to be standing outside as he used the super-plush mahogany portable toilets.

A surly ROBBIE WILLIAMS used his two minders to keep away autograph hunters. Everyone was agreed that the singer, charm personified on stage, was the biggest grouch behind the scenes. He paced up and down outside his dressing room to make sure all eyes were on him but snarled as anyone came near him.

He turned on the charm, however, while being interviewed by the BBC's FEARNE COTTON. She blushed as he told her: 'My name's Robbie Williams. I'm single. I hear you're newly single. Why don't we get it on?'

She replied: 'Can we save this for when the cameras are off?' But he continued: 'Make Poverty History and Get Robbie Laid - they're the two messages we've got today.'

Although comic PETER KAY is not known to be a big drinker, barmen credited their cocktails for his stumbling and rather slurred version of (Is This The Way To) Amarillo which he sang three times before introducing The Who.

BRAD PITT, on stage for all of two minutes, was furious that he did not have his own dressing room and RICHARD CURTIS, the director who heads the Make Poverty History campaign, had to vacate his for the actor.

The room was just one down from that of COLDPLAY and Pitt happily caught up with his former fiancee GWYNETH PALTROW, who is now married to the band's frontman CHRIS MARTIN. He appeared particularly entranced by the couple's baby APPLE, leading to further speculation that he is hoping to start a family with ANGELINA JOLIE, who was at the Cornwall Live8 concert with her adopted son MADDOX.

BOB GELDOF was also accompanied by his three daughters FIFI, 21, PEACHES, 16, and PIXIE, 14, who spent the afternoon chatting to their father's famous friends. Sources say Peaches was close to tears when looking at a book of pictures from the first Live Aid when she came across one of her father and mother PAULA YATES.

Despite running the event, Geldof managed to offend at least one person. Fellow organiser MIDGE URE was said to be furious that Bob had refused to allow him to perform - but then appeared himself singing the Boomtown Rats song I Don't Like Mondays.

Ure was heard muttering furiously: 'Oh God, what a tart he is,' when he saw Geldof singing on the video screens in the VIP room. Those who were at the original Live Aid remembered how Geldof had moved his performance around in the first show meaning that he, and not Ure, would perform in front of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

This time around, the closest the show came to a royal guest was LAURA PARKER BOWLES, daughter of the Duchess of Cornwall. She appeared to be making the most of her VIP status in the Hard Rock Cafe hospitality tent. Most obscure request of the day came from Madonna, who said she would drink only Kabbalah water - which she credits with getting rid of her husband GUY RITCHIE'S verrucas. She still clearly has her finger on the pulse however, and grabbed comic RICKY GERVAIS to beg for a role in his new show.

Minutes after her powerful performance, she was practically dragged out of the backstage area by her husband who had a more than firm hold on her hand. But she made sure the other hand was free to pick up her A-list goodie bag, said to be worth £7,000, including jewellery and computer equipment.

B-listers such as THE KILLERS and KEANE got a cheaper £1,000 gift bag including a 3G Nokia phone and i-Pod, while dancers got a free Live8 T- shirt. MARIAH CAREY lived up to her reputation as a demanding diva by insisting on candles for her changing room. But despite being booed by much of the audience after her cloying performance, in which she plugged her new single, she astounded everyone by staying on for the grand finale.

Despite the wealth of celebrities present, the big topic backstage was the PINK FLOYD reunion.

NICK MASON revealed how the band 'eyeballed each other' as they prepared for their first gig in 24 years 'in a slightly alarming way' but compared the reunion to 'riding a bike'. DAVE GILMOUR, meanwhile, said it was 'a bit like sleeping with your ex-wife'. Both ruled out any further reunions.

There were plenty of faces backstage who did not appear to have a reason to be there, including JERRY HALL, It girl PARIS HILTON and actress SCARLETT JOHANSSON, who justified the gossip that she is seeing Pearl Harbor star JOSH HARTNETT as the pair spent most of the day kissing.

Not to mention KIMBERLEY STEWART, daughter of Rod, JEMIMA KHAN and FAYE DUNAWAY.

And there were even more who tried but failed to get in, including Celebrity Love Island 'star' PAUL DANAN and comic JIMMY CARR.

Back with the McCartneys, Sir Paul threw an unofficial aftershow party in the marquee adjoining his dressing room, where guests included GEORGE MICHAEL, Bob Geldof and TRAVIS.

Other celebs made their way to the Met Bar, right next to the park. Among the party animals were CAT DEELEY, PATRICK KIELTY, SARA COX and BORIS BECKER.

But the official party at the bar Elysium - which cost £100 a ticket - proved a damp squib. Only celebrities to show up were JUDE LAW and SIENNA MILLER, who had not even been to Live8.
