I just laugh at all the dudes trying to say they dont want success in 20 years. I'm sure Leif Garrett would like it back.

I read years ago a interview with Kim Thayal from Soundgarden. He was asked if he was influenced by any of the classic rockers (Stones mentioned specifically). He went all out to say no. Saying how dated it all was, and i think he even bagged the Stones guitar sound as "wimpy".

Yet, people in the know, can hear Black Sabbath written all over many Soundgarden songs. It seems to be a badge of honour to be "totally independent" and dismissive of their influences. Maybe its a grunge thing? I recall Nirvana being likened to the Who as well. That went down really well with the Seattle dudes (Cobain claimed he didnt even know the Who used to smash their instruments!!).

Mind you, i also bet Kim Thayal wishes success was still around.

I mean, its just totally crap. Who are they trying to kid? Like, they WANT to fail? They WANT to be disregarded? Maybe they think its cool to pretend not to care?

I dont know. Its all too much. Back to masturbating now.

Fuck Kim. Man, I was a huge Soundgarden fan back then but even then when it was not cool to dig classic rock, the Stones remained my fav band. Ok, not the 1989 version but you know what I mean. Kim was a lucky dude. He is not doing anything because he could only do one thing, and that was Soundgarden. Yes his dropped tunings were heavily influenced by Sabbath and even if Chris Cornell shrugged off the Zep comparisons, they were dead on. Maybe he's comfortable and happy I don't really care but I remember him saying he wasn't a hired gun so he wouldn't be joining any other band. What that meant was he couldn't join any other band because well you know why. It's just the punk rock attitude, that's all. Ask Bloozehound.

I remember running into the bass player from the Screaming Trees at the Metro once. I asked him if he was into the blues. Maybe he'd want to check out some blues after the rock show we were at on his night off in Chicago. He said no. Ok, he wasn't a dick about it, he just didn't know anything about the music that influenced his music. Kinda found that disturbing a musician wasn't aware of the past. But then again I majored in history.

Oh shit, Soundgarden coverd "Stray Cat Blues" too, lol.

MrPleasant Ya know, a little boy can learn how to speak decently a language, but that doesn't make him explicitly aware of grammar. That's kind of what happens to these (hopefully few) arrogant acts (punk attitude, yeah -- "he's the prince of the punks and he's finally made it/he thinks he looks cool but his act is dated"), who make fun of living icons like The Stones, even though they're probably, although unconsciously, paying them tribute through their paraphernalia and work.

I can take some criticism concerning my favorite bands, but what's the use when there's no criticism at all -- just crappy comedy? But, well, it wasn't Grohl's fault completely. The question from the host was just graceless.

corgi37 Man, the Screaming Trees "I nearly lost you" is just about my all time fave non-stones song. I just adore it!

Sir Stonesalot The reason you are all pissed about this is because it has the ring of truth to it.

C'mon...do you really think that Mick Jagger is in this just for the love of making music? The reason Jagger has love for making music...is because that it's what swells his bank accounts.

Nigga please...it's all about the $$$, and it's been that way for decades.

The Stones have brought shit like this on themselves. It goes with the territory. They wanna charge people $100.00 just for the right to buy $450.00 tickets, and make show tunes out of their back catalogue....well then they oughta expect some flack about it. Hey Mick...see what Goddess in the Doorway gotcha!?! Duh.

And it's not like Dave Grohl is the first fucker to ever say stuff like this. You better get fuckin ready to hear lots more "wrinkly rocker" bullshit once the tour gets started. I can't believe anyone is shocked about someone saying this shit.

Look, I think Mick Jagger is the 9th wonder of the world. But that doesn't blind me of the fact that Sir Michael and Rolling Stones Incorporated are doing shit that makes them look bad. I mean, all of us have bitched about it at one time or another. You shouldn't blame a guy for going after a few cheap and easy laughs at the expense of Sir Michael, when we pitch a bitch about the same stuff. Mick makes it pretty easy sometimes.
June 3rd, 2005 03:29 AM
MrPleasant Sir Stonesalot: The reason why the whole thing bothered ME a little was because Grohl said it; I enjoy his work (as for Soundgarden, they don't "make my day").

But, well: to each their own. Who cares what David Grohl has to say about the upcoming work of the Rolling Stones? I certainly don't. Not because he may be entitled to his opinion, but because, from now on, I know there will be times when he'll be biased about the issue.

Factory Girl Yep, Soundgarden did cover Stray Cat Blues.

The original drummer from Screaming Trees used to email me. He's a HUGE Iggy fan.

I have a Alice In Chains dvd, and in one scene Jerry Cantrell is wearing a Stones shirt.

Not all Seattle-scene dudes blew off the past.

Bullshit. I call bullshit on this whole thread.

Grohl was hired away from another band by Nirvana, who desperately needed a great drummer at the time. Bleach sounds NOTHING like the later Nirvana albums, mainly because Grohl gives them extraordinary loft. I can't believe this thread. You people are so sensitive.

Can't stand it because it's true, is that it?

Jagger said himself that he couldn't imagine playing Satisfaction when he was, what, 40?

What's the friggin' difference?

Scream was the band or something like that right? A DC hardcore band if I recall.

I had a guitar player once tell me if Don Henley asked David to play with him (on SNL or some tv appearance) he must be good.

Speaking of Grohl dissing bands, anyone see him dis Extreme in what was it, They Year Punk Rock Broke. Some docu thingy. It was great, he said, "don't they know...don't they know they suck?" lol, where's Nuno now?

it wasnt don henley, was it..? i remember dave on snl with another band, but i thought it was tom petty, when petty was touring behind that fantastic wildflowers album...

speaking of which, why did the drummer get the boot..? i mean, tom stuck by howie, warts and all, what did the drummer do to piss petty off so much..? they all played on "wildflowers" except the drummer...

Dan It hardly even seemed like a dis to me. But then maybe if Grohl said "I will retire when I need 3 other people to sing my songs for me" it would have resonated better.

Funny someone would have mentioned "Bleach," Dale Crover is my all time favorite drummer, and a great guy too!

Maybe it was Petty, I don't think I ever saw the actual performance, just heard a shred guitar player giving Grohl props which I found interesting.

I have no clue about TP and what he did with his band.

corgi37 But my hang up is this.

How come no one says Robert Smith and his Cure buddies should retire? How 80' are they? Does he get bagged for not changing his look in 25 years? No, not one bit!

Why isnt Nick Cave a fossil?

Why was Sinatra still playing sold out high priced shows well passed his use by date? Not many people bagged him. It was an event. Some thing to tell the kids "Hell yeah, i saw Sinatra".

The Stones are an easy target for a headline grab and a cheap laugh. And every single one of the morons who bag them would adore to be in their shoes. Most people seem to be pissed off because the Stones as a live act are not only popular, but raking in more money than anyone.

For people to say "they do it for the money" is a fucking joke.

Do you go to work for free?

Same as the ticket prices. Who cares how high they are? Dont go. Some one will have your seat. People here can be the big hero and say "I wont pay that". Fine. Dont. Obviously, we wont be getting a review from ya's.

I am no apologist. I am realist as to where the old geezers are at. Irrelevant to everyone but us fans. But dont tell me any band wouldnt charge as much as they could - if they could. Well, Pearl Jam used to i guess, but they are about as current as last months milk.

But, at least the Stones HAVE fans still. And, plenty of them. They dont need to play cruise ships or in small tucked away bars in casinos. That is why i think most musos have a go at them. Envy, plain and simple.

Anyway, it really is time to get back to a good wank session. My wife is asleep, and i need to soil her.

I love it when her hair is all sticky.

But, then i always think that way after a few medicinal pipes.

Stones nemesis and Chicago Sun Times pop music critic Jim DeRogatis (aka the "Fat Bastard") sure does bag on Smith and his stupid look.

I'd much rather spend my $10 - $15 to support an old fella like any of the ones below. They don't come off as ridiculous and what they play is not crap (unlike say Buddy Guy).

Poison Dart Dave Grohl is half a fag.

He was also in the most overrated group in the history of music.

Who gives a shit what he has to say?

glencar I like some of his post-Nirvana stuff and his statement was annoying but it's just not that important. Maybe it's left-over anger from opening for the Stones & having most peope ignore him.
June 5th, 2005 01:07 AM
telecaster Didn't that idiot from the Chili Peppers say the same thing?

Yes he did

When is the last time you ever heard Keith or Mick talk bad about their elders in the business? Never

I think you can see Dave Grohl and The Red Hot Chili's on a double bill at the strip mall down the street for a $10 cover charge

Hey Dave, sorry your gravy train blew his head off and MTV doesn't play grunge anymore

Hope you took typing or woodworking in high school

These two are pissed because nobody showed up for their warm up band routine for The Stones

Sadly for them, there weren't thousands of teenagers who hate their parents for no reason on deaths door with Ecstasy to see their little show before The Stones came on

Envy....I love it

Uh...RhCP can usually sell out an arena or two every time they play here. Foo Fighters a bit smaller but still a decent draw (Universal times 2 last time I think)

Foo Fighters usually go gold or platinum. I think they are doing okay.

Seemed to be a lot of people for RHCP but yeah typical lame ass crowd the STones tend to draw these days

Damn ... well said corgi.

Good thread, y'all.

June 5th, 2005 02:57 PM
gorda At first I didn't know who y'all were talking about, but then when you mentioned he was the drummer for Nirvana turned guitar-player for the Foo-Fighters. Foo-Fighters? Is that really the name of their band? Isn't Dave the lead singer, too?

I once saw their video, that guy, Dave is so into himself, he played all the roles! He's in an airplane, and he's the pilot, the air stewardess, a passenger, another passenger . . . it was stupid, so I changed the channel.

P.S. I have some of Nirvanas's songs recorded on a cassette. I haven't listened to it in a while.

June 5th, 2005 04:20 PM
Sir Stonesalot >How come no one says Robert Smith and his Cure buddies should retire? How 80' are they? Does he get bagged for not changing his look in 25 years? No, not one bit!<

Are you kidding? Smith and The Cure get bagged on all the time...at least they do here in the States. As far as I can tell, they are pretty much considered a nostalgia act.

>Why isnt Nick Cave a fossil?<

That's easy. Nick keeps putting out new material. New material that is really good. Ya can't be a fossil if you are putting out good stuff.

>Why was Sinatra still playing sold out high priced shows well passed his use by date? Not many people bagged him. It was an event. Some thing to tell the kids "Hell yeah, i saw Sinatra".<

Again, what are you talking about? Frank was almost universally bagged on. His "tours" were the butt of huge jokes. I know people who went to see Frank so they could LAUGH at him. The only people who took those shows seriously were people Franks age.

>The Stones are an easy target for a headline grab and a cheap laugh.<

And who's fault is that?

>And every single one of the morons who bag them would adore to be in their shoes.<

Again, not true. Do you really think these young people would give up 30+ years off of their lives for some more money? They already HAVE money Corgi! Lots and lots and lots of money! Dave Grohl has more money than he could ever hope to spend. The Foo Fighters sell out their shows.

>Most people seem to be pissed off because the Stones as a live act are not only popular, but raking in more money than anyone.<

Who are these poeple that you speak of? Dave Grohl didn't sound pissed off to me.

>For people to say "they do it for the money" is a fucking joke.

Do you go to work for free?<

Don't get me started. I save lives for a living. You tell me who deserves to be making millions.

>Same as the ticket prices. Who cares how high they are? Dont go. Some one will have your seat. People here can be the big hero and say "I wont pay that". Fine. Dont. Obviously, we wont be getting a review from ya's.<

If the Stones were doing these tours for the love of making music they could charge a quarter of what they do and STILL make millions. But instead they choose to gouge as much as they can possibly gouge out of people. So blind greed is OK?

I bought some of those $60.00 tickets.

>I am no apologist. I am realist as to where the old geezers are at. Irrelevant to everyone but us fans. But dont tell me any band wouldnt charge as much as they could - if they could. Well, Pearl Jam used to i guess, but they are about as current as last months milk.<

Actually lots and lots of current bands do whatever they can to keep their ticket prices affordable. And that includes...GASP!...not taking as big a cut.

>But, at least the Stones HAVE fans still. And, plenty of them. They dont need to play cruise ships or in small tucked away bars in casinos. That is why i think most musos have a go at them. Envy, plain and simple.<

Oh if it were just envy. The Stones do look ridiculous. Now, I look ridiculous as well, so that doesn't bother me, but in today's image driven society it means a lot. The Stones are old. But again, so am I, so that doesn't bother me either. But rock n roll has always been a young man's game, so the Stones are gonna get flack for it. And they get it from more than just Dave fuckin' Grohl. The truth sucks, but that doesn't make it any less truthful.

The whole point of the matter is that The Rolling Stones are easy targets. They are easy targets because they have made themselves easy targets. They haven't done anything to make themselves look good, and have gone out of their way to look like an old money grubbing nostalgia act. So what the fuck do you expect?

THAT is the plain and simple of it.

You might as well get used to it because you will be seeing tons more of this shit in the near future. Meanwhile, the Stones will laugh it off all the way to the bank. Why the rest of you aren't doing the same is beyond me.

Not the same thing. BB, Muddy, JLH, or Willie are not rock stars. With the exception of maybe Willie the dirty hippie, all aged gracefully unlike you know who.
