I don't think this photo is "gay" at all. Our culture here in the US is pretty fucked up when it comes to this sort of stuff, though. Thankfully there are other countries where it's considered quite normal for men to hug and, yes, even kiss each other, without it being homoerotic in the least - and this includes, but is not limited to, fathers and sons. Imagine that!

No problem hugging here!

FotiniD Sir Stonesalot, I can totally understand how you may not like a photo - I can even understand (but not agree) why you may think it looks gay, although I totally agree with GTRM's post. But I really find it hard to understand why you think there's a major conspiracy behind a simple magazine cover to get the fans used to wanting less, or how an RS cover - that has to do with a film, mind you, Keith just has a cameo, he's not representing the Stones there - can become a symbol for the Stones Inc.

The "Inc" aspect in the Stones has been around for years, whether we like it or not (and I don't) but I don't think that a magazine cover such as this embodies or strengthens it in any way.

Sir Stonesalot No Fotini...it's not a "conspiracy. It's a business model. It's marketing strategy.

And you are right...it's been around for years.

However, if you have been paying attention to detail, we are being fed stuff that years ago...we never would have stood for. And it seems that it's being done in dribbles and drips. Lower our expectations, increase profit margins.

Do you really need examples? You are hardcore, so you probably know what I'm talking about. Debuting videos on US Soap Operas, Timberlake, Atlantic City/Spain shows, Dave Matthews...the list is enormous.

These photos, taken by themselves, are no big deal. Add them on to the list of "marketing" ploys that Stones Inc. has perpetrated, and they are just another symtom of what is making The Rolling Stones...in Rock n Roll circles(not here, of course)...a big fucking joke.

Think back...say, 10 years. Bridges to Babylon tour. Even then Stones Inc was hard at work...but the Stones were still very well respected. Even Howard Stern gave them props after the Giant's Stadium show. But now? Almost EVERYONE who is anyone in the biz is taking shots at The Stones. From Kasabian to Ryan Adams to Dave "Fucktard" Grohl are popping off at them. Why is that? The shows are still pretty good so I doubt that it's that. All of those people sell more albums than the Stones so jealousy isn't the answer either. No, IMO, it's the whole Stones Inc. zoo that is turning them into laughing stocks.

These pics are a continuation of a trend. The trend being, Stones related things that SHOULD be really cool, yet turn out to be really lame. And it doesn't have to be that way at all. Some of these ideas have merit...like playing SARSFest...yet they manage to screw the pooch on it...inviting Timberlake on stage instead of Angus & Malcolm. They have good ideas but can't execute those ideas properly.

I don't know who to point the finger at...that's why I call it Stones Inc. It's partly the band's fault, it's partly Cohl's fault, it's partly whomever they have doing the marketing, it's partly RS.Com...it's the whole shebang that's messed up.

I think the main problem is that The Stones are letting decidedly UN-rock and roll type people make decisions that should be made with rock n roll to the fore.

Now, as for lowering our expectations....you only have to look as far as ABB or Live Licks or Rarities. Be honest here. If the Stones had released anything resembling that "quality" around the time of say, Tattoo You...we would all have been screaming bloody murder. Yet today, most of you all seem to blithely accept that this is the "quality" that we can expect. This is because your standards and expectations have been continuously eroded and lowerd over the last decade. And IMO, this has been carefully orchestrated by the powers that be at Stones Inc. Our boys are old and not really interested in rock n roll anymore...so how do we minimize their involvement and effort required, and still make more money than god?

The answer was very simple...lower fan expectations and put the boys on the road as a nostalgia act. It's win win for the band...they can cruise on auto-pilot, toss together a product that they can tour behind without making much of an effort. And most importantly...make more money than god. This leaves them all plenty of time to go to Fiji and fall out of coconut trees or to produce movies that no one goes to see or to have multiple stints at a rehab resort or to raise horses and play in a jazz band.

Now, you may be thinking, SS is full of shit. You may be right. But if you step back and look at The Stones recent history, the incidents are there. And these incidents point in a rather disturbing trend arc. Not only that, but it appears that this arc is being purposely orchestrated. Again, I don't think it is some clandestione conspiracy aimed at ruining The Stones hard won reputation. I think it's a business model that hasn't been very well executed in many different instances. And THAT is tarnishing The Stones hard won reputation.

These photos are just another instance of a missed opportunity...and a continuation of that disturbing downward spiral. And I think that sucks.

Highwire Rob My subscription better be in my mailbox when I return from vacation. That cover? I like it. I'm gonn'a frame it for my apartment.

I just hope my Auntie and I get in to the right film for the third Pirates. Last time, we barely had viewed ten minutes when Auntie grabbed my hand and escorted me from the theater. In our rush we had mistakenly entered the small side-street "Bijou." Back outside and looking up at the marquee we read: BUTT PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN QUEEN.

Those pirates were searching for treasures in depths we never had imagined the likes of - Auntie and I can tell you! This week, my Auntie is keen on seeing The Constant Uphill Gardener so we shall just have to be more careful.

FotiniD I agree with a lot of your points Sir Stonesalot, but I think that behind all of this there's one simple - simplistic maybe, but I think true - reason: dudes are old. Not every musician is blessed with great inspiration and creativity until they drop dead or reach 85. And although I'd love them to be able to create marvelous records that would make everyone's jaws drop to the floor, it seems less and less likely or even realistic with each passing year. They're too 'spoiled' to sit down and really give it a go until the song is perfect, e.g. Exile level. They've already god dozens of songs like this.

So, I'm not sure whether it's a fact of lowering our expectations or just adapting to reality: it has reached a point where they can just continue like this until the whole thing ends on its own, one way or another, or they call it quits now. I don't really pay attention to what the press is saying about the Stones or how they deal with them, because the press will glorify an artist one day and then throw shit at them. If the Stones had disbanded in 1973, they'd be enjoying greater fame than the Beatles today and the press would be begging for a reunion. So I don't really value the press opinion on what the Stones do.

The Stones have always focused a lot on their live performances, and I still enjoy them there (although yes, there's huge room for improvement, e.g. drop the Vegas act). And ABB had some really great moments. The fact that they're still here is an extra for me. They had their eyebrow raising moments, and yes, there have been more of them recently, but I don't think they've ever ridiculed themselves or come off as a circus act (OK, with the exception of some solo times best be forgotten )

The point of the matter for me? I like the fact they're still around and I like the fact that they've raised our expectations so much, that we always ask for more.

Oh, and I like the stupid cover I do!

_Boomy_ Anybody else find it kind of weird that Keith always talked about the "posers" who wanted to be like the Stones -- and he's taking a photo with a guy who tries to act like him?

Stones INC. is right. If it's for the right price, it's ok.

Exile was released about a year after Sticky Fingers. I think they just spend so much of their time on other pursuits that they can't seem to spend much time on the making of music.

Sir Stonesalot >but I think that behind all of this there's one simple - simplistic maybe, but I think true - reason: dudes are old. Not every musician is blessed with great inspiration and creativity until they drop dead or reach 85.<

Well, OK. But I call bullshit on that, in this case.

The Rolling Stones are STILL The Rolling Stones. It's not like they forgot how to play. They still have the talent. The flashes of old brilliance are there. Even on ABB...the last 30-45 seconds of ONNYA flat out rocks ass. The kind of rockin' that no one else besides The Stones can touch. So why the fuck did we only get 40 seconds of it? Because they are old? That's a ridiculous notion.

I think Glenny is probably the closest to being right...The Stones are more interested in being celebrities, and their interests do not lie in exploring the boundries of Rock n Roll. Their priorities have become decidedly UN-Rock n Roll.

Now, is this a result of being in the Rock n Roll game for 40+ years? Are they just tired of being The Rolling Stones? Are they so rich and spoiled that they've lost touch with the desire to actually be "The Greatest Rock n Roll Band on the Planet"?

Is it that they simply "can't" do it anymore...or that they just don't feel like pushing it anymore. There is a difference, you know? IMO, they certainly CAN do it. The shit is all still there...in my mind and heart, I KNOW that The Stones could still kick everyone's ass. I believe that 100%. However, I also realize that the likelyhood of them actually getting the fire back in their belly to actually do it is more like 1%. And THAT SUCKS.

So what do we do about it? Is there any way that we as fans can light a fire under their Depends-clad asses? Well not if we just blandly accept being fed crap under the guise of, "I just feel fortunate that they are still around" bullshit. What a fucking cop out. I'll have no part of it.

I am still a true believer. And I, even all by my lonesome, will be right here calling bullshit on Stones Inc's bullshit. I'm saying right now...if The Rolling Stones don't really want to be The Rolling Stones anymore, then they should fucking quit. If they are not interested in being Rock n Roll anymore...then fucking unplug the amps and turn out the Klieg lights. I'd rather have the back catalogue stay the way it is than have another pile of shit album like ABB added to it. I have already resigned myself to not going to another show. No way I'm paying $250+ to see them just go through the motions. I'd rather just watch Gimme Shelter or Ladies & Gentlemen again. If they think they are too "old" for Rock n Roll...then STOP IT. I refuse to give them that crutch.

Sure, I know I'm acting all Don Quioxte. Yeah I'm jousting at windmills. But I'd rather do that than just sit around waiting for Stones Inc to feed me another spoonful of shit. I am a fan, and I owe it to The Rolling Stones to hold them to the bar that they themselves set. And if thety really can't reach that bar any longer...then they should just give it up, and go be tabloid celebs.

Thanks for the debate. I have enjoyed it.
