Riffhard Good for my French friends! You have elected a good man in Sarkozy. I must say that I thought France would make the same mistake that Sain did in electing a socialist with Royal. I am happy to see that France has elected a man that has made no bones about the fact that he would like to strengthen relations with the USA. Perhaps there is hope yet for Europe. Vive La France!

This may well make me change my attitude towards the French. That makes me happy.

caro As much as I'm unhappy with today's election results -- the socialist candidate had it coming at her. I was banging my head against the wall during the big debate between Sarkozy and Royal. Not even ten minutes into the debates, she started trying to challenge Sarkozy on security, his favorite topic. Being a woman and all, she came up with the story of a female police officer who had been raped while leaving work late at night. I'll make a quick transcript because I think it captures everything that's wrong with her.
"Royal : ...Two days ago, a policewoman was raped near her police station. Last March, at the same place, one of her colleagues had also been raped. How can it be that during the period between these two events, no protection was afforded to policewomen?
I say that if I am elected president, public service officers, especially women, will be protected, they will be accompanied to their home after work when they leave the police station late at night.
I mention this because it leads us to the question you asked about decreasing the number of public service employees. M. Sarkozy, I will not reduce the number of civil servants, or else you will have to tell me in which area you want to decrease this number. If there were more police officers, maybe this woman wouldn't have been raped, because she would not have been alone, she would been on her way home with a colleague (...)
Sarkozy: Tell me, if you are going to have every policewoman accompanied home at night...
Royal: Indeed!
Sarkozy...there will be one public service serving the french people and one public service for civil servants leaving work."

This is so ridiculous to me. Like I said, it was at the beginning of the debate, and Sarkozy didn't even push her into this corner -- she did it all by herself. She tries to prove that she's not afraid of "right-wing" subjects (in this case, security), and instead of offering a reasonable solution, she'll just say the first friggin thing that comes to her mind. And in the process, she reaffirms exactly the cliché that the socialists are desperately trying to get rid of : that the socialists' approach to problems is to spend money endlessly.

Ahem, anyway. Election is over, and in view of the results, I doubt she will play much of a role in the socalist party in the next few years. That cheers me up a bit.

mrhipfl I was rooting for Bayrou, who is in the middle of left and right wing. Sarkozy was my second choice. I'm just glad LePen and the young communist weren't close to being elected. LePen was a runner-up once, wasn't he?

Yeah, in 2002. He just beat Jospin to 2nd place in the first round but lost to Chirac by an absolute landslide in the 2nd round. Hardly a surprise as hes not exactly going to pick up votes from the eliminated candidates.

glencar I asked an Air France pilot this morning if he voted & without prompted he said, "Sarkozy!" I'm very proud of the French & will return to calling those things "French fries." We must let bygones be bygones.

I'am french and I voted for Royal. Sarkosy's victory is a very bad thing for France. Sarkosy is like Berlusconi in Italy, he manages medias and people...

But i'm sure of one thing: YOU CAN'T BE A STONES' FAN AND VOTE IN THE SAME TIME FOR SARKOSY.

Shame on my country!
6th May 2007 06:24 PM
Jumacfly I fuckin hate Sarkozy, the guy that did a shitty job in the 5 last years, the guy that put fire in Paris in 2005 (unlike the Stones in 2003 LOL), the guy who says you are born with pedophily or suicide gencode...need more? a fuckin challenger for W and Berlusconi

I've voted Royal AGAINST Sarkozy, the socialists did the lamest capagne ever and are a bunch of pathetic 20's century loosers, but now the future is between Bayrou's hands, my fav and first choice on the first round.
