Topic: Pete Townshend: The Police aren't "classic rock" Return to archive Page: 1 2 3 4 5
26th March 2007 08:02 AM
Mel Belli From today's Daily Express:

ROCK legend Pete Townshend is less than impressed to hear that recentlyreformed Eighties band The Police are now being billed as a "classic rock" group.

The Who guitarist doesn't believe Sting and bandmates should be placed in the same category as his own band and fellow veterans The Rolling Stones.

"The Police are punk, they're a punk band, " he insists.

"They're not classic rock. You've got The Who and The Stones. Classic rock - finished. It's all over after that. This is just music. It's not classic anything."

CraigP The Police are not classic rock NOR punk rock by any means.
They're F*ing called "The Police"!

This, my friends, is real "punk". Real "punk" bands like these (The Subhumans), do not consider themselves punks.
I've seen these guys live 3 times for only $10. There is nothing like it.
Don't be confused by the people dancing at these shows, we are very respective of eachother. There is alot of love and energy at these shows

Which is another, and equally accurate, way of saying a dead man is more punk-rock than Sting.

_Boomy_ How can Pete be both correct and wrong in one sentiment?

The only thing I could ever really get into in the Police's catalog was "Ghost In the Machine". And I would not categorize that as punk. The rest of their work is just not my cup o' tea.

The Police are punk... Pete is a moron.
Is this why Pete thought he was a cop, when he was looking at child porn online.

Brilliant A-Listing!

I love Post.
26th March 2007 02:26 PM
Dan "Classic Rock" is a term invented by radio station executives who play as much Foreigner and Styx as they do The Who and the Stones.
26th March 2007 02:30 PM
Saint Sway I like that old Pete is proud to be labeled "classic rock" and seems to wear it like a chip on his shoulder

especially because I think Mick cringes at hearing the Stones called "classic rock"
