Topic: What's better Voodoo Lounge or A Bigger Bang? Return to archive Page: 1 2

The Wick I think it's way too early to call. I've been listening to ABB on the Rolling Stone site and the songs seem pretty solid, although some of Jagger's incessant enunciation and the slick sound on most of the songs irritates the shit out of me. Whether it's better than VL will take a few more years to decide. I loved VL from the beginning and have come to appreciate it even more now. I think ABB needs to fester for a few years before we can come up with any definitive opinions. I suspect much of the euphoria is just the excitement associated with a new album.

gimmekeef The real deal comes when they take the songs to the stage.I think thats when ABB is gonna explode.I truly believe after about 10 full listens (even mp3's)that this album surpasses VL and Tattoo You and perhaps Some Girls due to its depth....We'll see down the road...

tumbling dice
The two ones got a same vibe. raw, pure and sometimes introspective. The Bigger Bang tracks got more swing, energy, a smooth bass line and doesn´t have a `retro feeling`´ of Voodoo Lounge. Finally, ABB got much more fast numbers, amazing rockers and it is very important to us, ROCK & ROLL fans.

What's wrong with that? If my jeans are too long, I can shorten them to fit me better.
VL has too many songs and many of the more rootsy stuff (which I prefer) from those sessions were dumped to b-sides. Since I re-arranged VL, the original has been gathering dust on the shelf.
And talk about too many songs...Dirty Work would've been a great as a single. One Hit as the A-side and Had it With You on the back.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with rearranging available tracks to produce a satisfying mix, but I don't see what it has to do with deciding what's actually a better record.

Sessions are not a record and personalized resequencing does not represent finalized artistic intentions. What artists choose to bring to the marketplace DOES matter and is relevant in discussions of relative merit. The Stones overthought, overcooked, and overworked Voodoo Lounge, and as a result, the album itself lies flat and still on its back and makes the listener do all the work. That the dedicated Stones listener has access to 10 discs worth of outtakes from these sessions has nothing to do with what the band chose to release. What the Stones chose to leave off Voodoo Lounge and the fact that every Stones fan always talks about that album in terms of its outtakes is indicitive of its overall aesthetic failure.

Your jeans may fit you better if you tailor them, but that has nothing to do with the standard size that everyone has to go by.

What you're talking about are the relative merits of the Voodoo Lounge sessions, which did produce some interesting shit, and the Bigger Bang sessions, which cannot be quantified until outtakes surface.

polytoxic A Bigger Bang for sure. No question it's the strongest set since 1981. 10 of the tunes can sit easily with anything the Stones have done since Exile. Voodoo was good, but the ensemble sound really comes through on this. My only beef is the album stops dead in its tracks with Streets Of Love. But Rough Justice, Back Of My Hand, Laugh I Nearly Died, Look What The Cat Dragged In & Infamy are instant classics in my opinion. It Wont take Long, Dangerous Beauty, She Saw Me Coming, Driving Too Fast , Oh No Not You Again probably all top I Go Wild or You Got Me Rocking and certainly blow stuff like Brand New Car or Mean Disposition away. This Place Is Empty is nice but keith's really mined this vein already. Sweet Neocon is whatever, at least it's got cool harmonica but it seems forced with the lyrics. Biggest Mistake is okay Americana, but it's not going to give the other countrified numbers of the Stones a run for their money. The only real debacles are the Matt Clifford productions Rain Fall Down, which sounds like an outtake from Side Two of Undercover which ain't saying much. Streets Of Love, which has no business being on a Rolling Stones album and Let Me Down Easy, which they should've pawned off on Aerosmith. Overall though, it is an outstanding effort.

padre You got a point Nasty. Let me refrase: Voodoo Lounge sessions produced great tracks but the actual release is too long. Good songs, average album.
Can't wait to hear ABB!

Jair I love Voodoo Lounge by its consistency and cohesion. Actually is one of my fave Stones album. Great rocks and also slow songs.

Now, ABB...I'm afraid I haven't heard it enough. I heard it only four times in MP3 low quality files and...still sounds great!

Its very catchy, I'm always with a song in my mind, even didn't knowing its names.

Much likely is better than VL. Lets see next week!!! I will try miss the work at least one entire day to listen to many many many times....I'm liking what I'm listening by now...

Soldatti First listen from the radio: Best album in almost 30 years.

Jumping Jack I like it better than Some Girls and TY. Can't decide on IORR. GHS wins only because of MT on a few tracks but there are more clunkers on GHS than ABB.

kilgoretroutman A record store owner, lent me his demo copy of ABB, so I got to listen to it a few times last night. I think its much better than the offical VL release. Virgin Rec's really screwed VL in trying to make it a "hit record". The original mix (VL Alt) is much closer in quality to ABB.

just my opinion

Now that's a #1 hit if I ever saw one. Excellent points, NH.
