I'd give them both 4 out of 5 stars. But at this very early point I'd have to go with Voodoo Lounge. |

Bang
No contest (I much prefer BTB to VL anyway)
This is the best Stones record since Tattoo You. And as that was miraculously culled together from leftovers, its the best new material theyve put together since Some Girls
Its also far more consistent a record than VL in that VL has a couple of clunkers on it. Bang also has a couple of genuine classics on it, which are better than anything on Voodoo Lounge |

I fully agree with that assesment Gary. While I love VL it had to grow on me. Bang is instantly seared into my brain, and for the life of me I cannot think of an album since Some Girls that has such great continuity has Bang does. Tattoo You was great in it's concept of two completely different sides, but Bang seems to flow perfectly from start to finish, and even SOL sounds better when book ended between Rain Fall Down and Back of My Hand. A brilliant effort, and I am proud to wear my Stones' fandom on my sleeve with this release. Hell the Stones have made us all look like the geniuses we are!!

I've spent a decade thinking about VL & it really isn't very good. ABB is better almost by default but luckily, it wins on its actual merits. |

I'm such a big geek when it comes to the Stones that I'll just say A Bigger Bang is the best album of all time.
I love the time around a new Stones release. Such buzz and anticipation. |

A bang without a doubt.
The songs are better, and so are the performances.
The mix is a lot brighter also. I always thought Charlies drums sounded kind of dull on Voodoo. |

Bigger bang kicks the livin shit out of Voodoo lounge.
ABB sounds inspired, VL doesn't, to me. I'm guessing it took Charlies health scare to kick Mick and Keith in their collective asses. The new album has something sooo much more genuine than the last 3. it's hard to describe, but after listening, you just know.. it really is that good!

Bang for sure!
64 minutes of pleasure, despite SOL,and no clunkers like new faces or moon is up...the weakest songs on Bang are quite funny, like "she saw me coming"for example: it's a classic riff, quite stupid , but ,hell, it works perfectly!
and the sound is much better on Bang. VL sounded like if the stones wanted absolutely to sound like the stones, kind of cannibalism IMHO...
Bang rocks the house, with an incredible finish(laugh, neocon, cat,DTF,infamy) ... |

That's easy ABB, once the excitement of the release passed, I've always found VL to be a bore, dull production and uninspired songs. To me VL is probably one of their most boring albums in fact.
If the question had been ABB vs B2B, it's a harder call, the production is much better than on VL and there are much more memorable songs too. The sheer energy of ONNYA tips the scale towards ABB at this point though. |

so true. those are EXACTLY my sentiments, Riffy.
people who know me to be a Stones fan are asking me about the album as the good publicity starts to spread. I just tell them two things: 1) I'm not TOTALLY surprised, cause it's the boys, and 2) wait till you hear the thing for yourself. We should all be quite proud of our band right now. It's the best time to be a Stones fan since I've been old enough to buy albums and see tours, hands down. what a blessing. |

I compressed Voodoo to give it some extra boost, re-arranged the tracklist and shortened it to vinyl-age length:
1. You Got Me Rocking
2. Sparks Will Fly
3. I Go Wild
4. So Young
5. Blinded By Rainbows
6. Cocaine (the outtake, Keef solo. A couple of lines of studio talk, then straight to..)
7. The Worst
8. Love Is Strong (added some extra vocals in the end from Keef's lead sung outtake)
9. The Storm
10. I'm Gonna Drive
11. Mean Disposition
12. Out Of Tears
Dunno about ABB yet, but this VL really kicks ass now. It IS a mighty fine record. |

to be honest, my opinion on VL hasnt really changed since I bought it. I like it much the same as I did then, but I've always preferred Bridges. I know that I liked THIS album better on initial listens though, and I think over time it'll stay that way
getting the album early doesnt make much difference either as I've had copies of VL, BTB and ABB all before the release date... |

I had a brief honeymoon period with Voodoo Lounge when I thought it was great and then about a month in realized it was a formalist, sterile, bloodless, soulless stinker of a record, and probably Jagger's nadir in terms of lyrics. It's all so hypothetical and staid.
I doubt that will happen with the Bang. I think that it is a super solid, swaggering, fun record filled with good songs. Moments make me gasp. Arrangements trip me up. Lyrics actually make me laugh. It is, above all, convincing. Convincing is something that none of the post-Dirty Work records have truly been, although I do really like B2B in a clinical kind of a way.
But we'll see how I feel in 6 months to a year, when I've played Bigger Bang a couple hundred times.
Comparing alternate bootleg versions and personal rearrangements to official releases and declaring them "better" is absolutely mystifying, guys.

What's wrong with that? If my jeans are too long, I can shorten them to fit me better.
VL has too many songs and many of the more rootsy stuff (which I prefer) from those sessions were dumped to b-sides. Since I re-arranged VL, the original has been gathering dust on the shelf.
And talk about too many songs...Dirty Work would've been a great as a single. One Hit as the A-side and Had it With You on the back. |
