jb Ian Steward was the 6th Stone,...he was just too manly looking to be a Stone.
12-18-02 01:20 PM
sasca I never understood why his looks were held against him. I discussed it with my mom once and she thought he was the most handsome of the Stones. Perhaps you're right - he was too butch.
[Edited by sasca]

jb He had a large, protruding chin....he looked more like a heavy equipment machine operator, than a rock stAR...i BET HE was still pretty happy with his place in the band..he could have been Pete Best.
12-18-02 01:40 PM
egon wasn't the 2nd reason "6 is a crowd"?
12-18-02 01:42 PM
sasca Yeah, the Stones were bastards but they were never THAT heartless. The Beatles unfortunately not only dropped Pete but criticised him publicly. The rumours that he was not good enough are, according to other contemporaries, nonsense - he was very highly regarded and was the first Liverpool drummer to play in the style Ringo made famous. Of course, these people might be wrong but he still deserved better than he got.

Yeah. Didn't hurt Roxy Music, though.
12-18-02 02:20 PM
Sir Stonesalot I just got a Roxy Music show from Denver, 1978. It is a sparklingly good soundboard. I got it at a record show, it was marked as an import...The artwork, and sound quality lead me to believe that this may have been an official release, or slated to be officially released. I don't recognize the record company name, and off the top of my head, I don't recall what the name is....NRM, or ERM...3 initials...

Anyone know anything about it? It's mindblowingly good. Do NOT eat any psychadelics prior to listening...you might not get all the way back.

100 Years Ago could be a misprint on the Roxy CD, they didn't reform until '79, so it must be from the Manifesto tour in '79, there's a cool Roxy site if you haven't checked it out it's, vivaroxymusic.com

Tsssssss.........

Mathijs

Fantastic ! 100% Mathijs ! Maybe the best music specialist on the board since I'm here...

F505 Bullshit!!!!! If you ever have listened to a Miles Davis record (for example "Decoy") where Daryl played bass you'll find out that Bill Wyman is technically a poor player (compared to Daryl) who was very lucky that he had a good amplifier. Therefore he could join the Stones. Glad he is out ot the band. Let him stick to his hamburgers in his greezy restaurant.
12-18-02 10:18 PM
sammy davis jr. Technically a poor player maybe, but his style worked magic with the rest of the Stones. His bass lines have much more bounce than that chick DJ. Besides, the whole freaking band are "technically" poor players. This is rock n' roll- not jazz we're talking about.
12-19-02 07:55 AM
stone jr. darryl is not a stone. lisa is not a stone. i'll tell you who is a stone.

Mick Jagger
Keith Richards
Ronnie Wood
Charlie Watts

You have a point there, but to say that DJ makes the Stones sound like Status Quo is the greatest nonsense I've heard in many years.

dealer squealing Darryl is not a stone!
And although Mick Taylor played on theyrebest records and was a gret guitar player he was so dull and didnt have the Stoneslook, no suspence around that character!
12-19-02 09:48 AM
F505 Yes but does Charlie have the Stones look and Ian Stewart?
12-19-02 09:55 AM
dealer squealing Yes Charlie has awesome cool look(defenetly a stoneslook) and very few are going to argue about that! Ian Stewart didnt have the right look and therefore was not supposed to "be in the band". He could have been a truck driver, and coming to think of it he drove the van in the beginning!

L&A Yesterday: Mick, Brian, Keith, Charlie, Bill, Mick T. and Ron.
Today: Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ron
Tomorrow: ...

The question could be: who is really irreplaceable ? Good () musicians as DJ, Lisa, Chuck, ... can meet the conditions to perform the Stones classics live. I'm sure we can find good musicians to replace Ron or Charlie, or even Keith... that means that the only one who cannot be substituted is Mick ? I don't know...
Let's wait 20 years, and we'll see if D.J. is a real Stone, but today, he isn't !

F505 L&A just found your pv message! See my response. Cheers and a toast to the Belgian Stones-fans!

jb F505..why are they called Belgian waffles?

L&A Hi, F505 ! Thanks for the toast !
Cheers and a toast to our nothern neighbours !

...which pv message and which pv response are you talking about... ?
12-19-02 11:54 AM
Street Fighting Man It's quite simple - when they take the final bow at the end of the show it's Mick, Charlie, Keith and Ronnie. Doesn't take to much to figure it out who's credited as being a Stone. Also, all of the public relations, album covers, etc. feature the four "core" band members.

Behind the scenes, I'm sure there's some detailed contract language outlining who's who in the Stones, plus all of the "hired guns," such as Bobby, Chuck, etc.

Mathijs Daryll is technically extremely gifted, and hes one of the most praised bass players of the 90s. And to have played with Miles Davis proofs that. But to play bass in the Rolling Stones needs a complete other skill than technical wizardry: you need to have the swing and the pump. Bill Wyman plays with just two fingers (ring and index finger of his left hand), he plays a short-scale bass held upright, he plays with a pick he does everything you are learnt NOT to do in first lessons of bas playing class. But Bills bass lines are just plain incredible and unbelievable. They are so laid back while still full of swing, its a perfect combination of walking bass and upright bass. Listen to When The Whip Comes Down from Hampton 81 for Bills master piece (in my opinion). Due to his disability to play fast structures (with his very small hands), Bill plays very slowly, but ads in small, fragmented riffs to raise the illusion that he is playing fast. Listen to Its Only Rock and Roll from Love You Live to know what I mean. Bills ads just small clusters of notes, played against the bass and snare rhythm pattern of Charlie and this is what gives the song its lift and swing.

But now Daryl Jones with all his talent, he just doesnt know what to play on these simplistic R&R songs. Listen to Its Only Rock and Roll from the new Licks Tour or from the B2B Tour: Daryl plays a very standard 4/4 Status Quo-like Boogie Woogie pattern. It would be slightly o.k. if it was played against Charlie, but Daryl plays WITH Charlie, making the songs sound very standard and run through. Daryl just sounds so incredible bored! On this new tour, Daryl is given a chance to show hes a technical good player, but he turns most songs into boring tracks. Listen to Hot Stuff from Toronto, where Daryl turns the song into some boring jazz-funk, instead of the laid back 4-on-the-floor. He does this little solo on Stray Cat. And yes, it is technically really good what he does, but is sounds like shit on a Rolling Stones song!

I have said it before, and as much as I like the Stones and as enjoyable a Stones show still is ever since Daryl appeared, the drive and swing is gone.

Brian is sometimes claimed by the Welsh and Ian Stewart by the Scots.
