Starbuck this thread needs to come down immediately. it is forcing undue division amongst the regulars. for example, i used to have a high amount of respect for perks, but after this:

quote:
EXILE IS A GOOD RECORD BUT VERY OVERATED

it now seems that he's a ambisexual gypsy communist coddler.

i will backchannel, then get back to you all about what "the powers that be" are going to do about it.

You might be able to invade Canada, but you clowns would never be able to "take it over." Canada is too large, and the geography is perfect for guerilla warfare. You idiots couldn't win in Vietnam, and that was the size of my backyard. If you guys could get the Iraq situation under control, I might take you seriously, but until then I will just laugh. Yes, you have the most weapons, but you have no stomach for war. Your idea of "war" is to drop a bunch of bombs (including atomic bombs) from the air and then high tail it out of there as fast as possible so as to avoid any casualties. Cowards. Just look at Iraq. Shock and awe? More like blunder and bluster.

As for Canada's musical exports, we have indeed produced a lot of crap, but the good old US of A has produced more than its fair share if garbage. In fact, it could be argued that the US has only produced a handful of great bands since the original rock 'n roll explosion in the 50's (despite the fact that American artists dominate music charts around the world). Since then, the vast majority of influential/popular groups have come from outside the US. The beatles, The Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin - all of the biggest and best groups of all-time are British. You simply can't deny it.

Besides, you only listed the crappy Canadian groups/artists. What about Neil Young? The Band? Leonard Cohen? Gordon Lightfoot? Joni Mitchell? Rush? The Guess Whio? Plus, there are TONS of great Canadians bands that have made great music, but are not known outside of Canada. Sloan, The Killjoys, The Grapes Of Wrath, 54-40, Sam Robrets....

1. To most of the world, Canada is the 51st state . . . just without any balls.
2. It's entirely possible that we could over-run your country with girl scouts . . .
3. Here is a quick list, off the top of my head, of influential American artists that you seem to have forgotten about: Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Otis Redding, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin, the Doors, Greatful Dead, Graham Parsons, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Willie Nelson, the Ramones, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns n' Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Michael Jackson and Prince.
4. Neil Young, and maybe the Band, are the only truly great Canadian artists that you mentioned, and doen't Neil reside in south of your border these days?
5. Your "country" produced the Barenaked Ladies - which means you have filled your "crap music" quota per capita for the next 152 years.
5. Both your healthcare system and Molsen beer suck.
6. Nice weather you have up there.
7. Get a real football league with a regulation sized field.

Hard to fathom the Blind Boys found it enough to cover it recently, however, they nailed it. So, there, you sucked me in to make a comment towards a single lp, dig?

I'm not sure about this. They dropped "Claudine" from ER. SBA is one of the weaker cuts on the album but I can't think of much else I could see getting dropped. Also whilst most Stones albums of that era did only have 10 songs the ones on Exile are shorter so 12/13 songs would have been more likely.

1. I'm fully aware that many ignorant Americans view Canada as their 51st state, but I'm not sure that this opinion is shared by "the world"
2. Maybe you should try using your girl scouts in Iraq
3. Many of the American musicians you listed are "second-tier" artists that pale in comparison with the true greats, like Zeppelin, The Stones, The Beatles, Floyd, the Clash, Radiohead, The Who, The Kinks, Bowie, etc....Metallica? Red Hot Chili Peppers? Michael jackson? Prince? Surely you jest. As for the other artists you listed, I agree with most of them, as they were part of the original American jazz/rock 'n roll explosion in the 50's. If you would have read my original post you wuold have understood that I acknowledge the greatness of this group of musicians - but most of those who followed the are pretty mediocre.
4. I never said that Canada produced most of the rock 'n roll greats. I never said they produced more than the USA. All I said was that Britain produces more great artists than the USA. That is a fact.
5. The Barenaked Ladies suck. So what? If I listed all of the emberassing American "musical" acts that have emerged over the past 5 years alone it would take hours to read them all - there are literally THOUSANDS of them. Instead, I have two words for you: Paris Hilton.
6. Yeah, you're right - free universal health care is a bad idea. It's far better to live in a country where almost half of the citizens can't afford to see a doctor. And Molson beer? Yes, it's crap beer, but still miles better than the weak-assed, watered down excrement known as Miller, Budweiser, etc. All I can say is have fun drinking your 4% beer...lol....
7. No arguments about the bad weather.
8. Football is for idiots. Who cares about Canadian football? Most Canadians don't care about our football league, so try to come up with a better insult.

I always enjoy it when an American bothers to make fun of Canada.

I know that some people just like to push buttons but it usually
doesn't work on me... but please go ahead and try!!!

Our healthcare system has worked very well for everyone I know
but I'll assume that it hasn't worked for every Canadian. We hear
horror stories about the U.S. system just as you Americans hear
stories about ours.

Sure our weather is crap for half of the year but the same thing
applies to half of the U.S.A.

I don't think you'll upset too many Canadians by criticising our
football because not many Canadians are interested in it. I think
American football is very boring... very little time spent playing
an actual game. American football is a deplorable "modernisation"
of a terriffic sport called rugby.

Comparing American beer to Candian beer is a waste of time
because the best beer comes from Europe... same thing with wine.

America would have no interest in invading Canada but they'll
always make sure that no other country invades us because we
are your biggest market. My fellow Canadians buy more American
crap than any other country in the world.

Music is subjective but shitty music is produced everywhere.

As for Exile, I'll be even more offensive and cut it down to seven:

Rocks Off
Tumbling Dice
Sweet Virginia
Torn and Frayed
Loving Cup
Happy
All Down The Line

.

Nellcote My only problem remains that all weekend, wherever I went, whomever I talked to, even looking in the mirror, I was harrased as being a fucking moron. So it must be true. I will now create hats with the initials FM on the front, as well as create a web site, in tribute to my new found status. If anyone asks, my cry will be, take it up with Starvin Marvin. BTW, how is Bowen Island in the summer? Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

Bowen Island is great in the summer. I went there in August for the first time. It's only a 20 minute ferry ride from Vancouver but it feels like you're a million miles away from the city. I can't believe it took me so long to go there, considering it's practically on my doorstep.

Ya'll are goin' to Rock n Roll hell.

BTW, they only play Journey's "Open Arms" in Rock n Roll hell. Over and over and over without end.

The rest of us, who will go to Rock n Roll heaven get to hear Exile in all it's magnificent entirety(IMO, it's the only way to listen to it. I won't put it on unless I have the time to enjoy it from start to finish.)...whenever we want.

Yyteri Beach I understand that this thread is just for fun, like asking what you want to take with you to a deserted island.

Exile's a great album and every song's great but for fun I'd choose:

1) Rocks Off
2) Rip This Joint
3) Shake Your Hips
4) Casino Boogie
5) Tumbling Dice
6) Torn And Frayed
7) Happy
8) Turd On The Run
9) Ventilator Blues
10)Soul Survivor
