JB - great post to start the thread. I thank you. I'm so proud of W, but I'm also proud of the country. The process works, and we should all take comfort in that. Here's to four years of healing, and progress in America and around the world. My best wishes to everyone that voted yesterday, regardless of how you cast your ballot. I also extend my best wishes to those around the world, regardless of you feel about the results. It's time for all of us to move ahead. Civilized society is still at war with terror, and I hope we all find the best way to win this war, for ourselves, and our posterity. God bless.

are you serious??
socialism has been a dead issue since the Berlin wall came down - hell, even mainland china is slowly becoming part of the "western" capitalist system
and wait until it (western capitalism) really takes hold there with the absolutely huge market and pool of resouces (human and otherwise) that they have eventually (maybe not in our life-times but i'd say within the next 100 - 150 years) the centre of gravity of world politics will shift from Washington to Beijing (sp?) |

Agreed ScottFree... that bin Laden tape was essentially the Democratic clap track, and that didn't help Kerry one iota. The tape was a pitiful attempt to swing the US vote to Kerry through intimidation. It also seemed to indicate just how powerless bin Laden has become. America's response to UBL: "Go fuck yourself, pal." Something tells me Usama's days are numbered, as well as the foreign terrorists holding up progress and Democracy in Iraq.
anyway - i don't mean to go one sided today. It's time for all of us to take a deep breath, and remember that we're all in this together, especially us Americans.

Spoken like someone who lives in a country thats never had any concept of socialism (lucky you)
The whole idea of a party like the Democrats or a guy like Kerry (with his billionairess wife)in a country as politically conservative as the US being considered within a million miles of being "socialist" is downright laughable. |

Normally, if someone told me that there would be 4 more years of bush, I would be ecstatic!
With a Republican President and Republican control of both houses, watch the US take an even more drastic turn to the right.

ROTFL!! I'll tell that to my socialist pals tomorrow, it will raise their spirits. Sometimes I really feel like Americans and Europeans live on different planets. Not to say that my planet is better than yours -- but it depresses me that we can't even agree on such basic things as the definition of "socialist". |

Shanghi and Beijing are more capitalist than the US.
Now that Bush has won his second term - he need not pander to the crackers - his main voting block. You know there are very few rich patrician voters (the nature of capitalism...) so he could never even win prom queen appealing solely to them. He had to play the christian right wing small town un educated morons to get - and now stay - in office. It may not be as bad as you think. He may become more moderate now.

Indeed. Dunno what it's like in the UK, but I get the impression that our french right-wing politicians are shamelessly taking advantage of the gap between the french and the american definition.

but isn't he "one of them" himself (albeit a wealthy version) -
you maybe right 'tho, having hauled himself into a second term with an aggresive "war time presidient" stance he may attempt to bow out on a moderate note in order to have history judge him a "statesman" like figure
speaking as someone on the "inside" how do you see him moderating his positions and do you think he actually makes the call on these things?? - isn't it the faceless "back-room" boys who are actually setting the agenda and calling the shots?
cheers, my dear

He plays the good old boy. He isn't the brightest bulb - no doubt, as are many rich kids - but he ain't no cracker. He's a figurehead, a spokesmodel. Besides Arsecroft, the guys in control are pretty damn well educated, rational (whether you agree with them or not) and NOT fundamentalist christian nutbags. The class system is actually more complex in America than in England in many ways - because most of the country is in denial of it.

i know what you mean and having seen him perform over the last few months he's clearly getting good advice as to how to "play the crowd" and was very adept in his "performance"
it's certainly disheartening 'tho see that one of Kerry's "negatives" is that he was considered too intelligent - this "dumbing down" of the level of debate really drives me nuts but then I'm an over-educated type who also probably thinks too much
>Besides Arsecroft, the guys in control are pretty damn well educated, rational (whether you agree with them or not) and NOT fundamentalist christian nutbags.
well that's something to take encouragement from

that's a very interesting comment and I'd like to hear more of what you have to say on the topic - if you find yourself with time on your hands send us a PM or email - thanks

Im worried, Kerry was the lesser of the two evils - at least he wanted to curtail some of the Patriot Act - and now the world seems such a dangerous place. Civil liberties ripped apart, more wars, more peoples lives ruined, more fear and hatred.

Interesting trend below. This is from 2000. Red counties are Republican and blue counties are Democrat. Once the 2004 map comes out we will see 96% red counties. I'm trying to post the image but it might only show as the link. Le'see:
