stewed & Keefed HARMISON ENJOYS EARLY SUCCESSES

Steve Harmison underlined his growing importance for England with two early wickets after the historic opening Test against Bangladesh was disrupted by torrential rain at the National Stadium today.

The Durham fast bowler claimed two for nine from seven overs as Bangladesh finished on 24 for two after an opening day restricted to only 15 overs after firstly rain and then bad light interrupted the momentous first Test meeting between the two sides.

Play lasted less than 20 minutes this morning before rain saturated the outfield and after a wait of six hours while groundstaff dried out the outfield it restarted for less than an hour before bad light brought an early close with eight overs remaining despite the floodlights being in use.

It was a disappointing end to a promising start to the Test for England and particularly Harmison, who had complained of not being appreciated before the series, as he delivered a spell of hostility and pace.

But the lengthy time spent waiting on the sidelines did not seem to affect Durham fast bowler Harmison, who struck with the second ball of his third over after the re-start to remove opener Javed Omar.

Digging the ball in short, Harmison got encouraging lift from the wicket and the ball ballooned off the shoulder of Javed's bat and looped straight to the safe hands of Surrey all-rounder Rikki Clarke in the gully.

Harmison could have claimed a second victim only three balls later when fellow opener Hannan Sarkar shouldered arms to a full-length delivery which jagged back sharply and hit him on the pads but Sri Lankan umpire Asoka de Silva rejected England's loud appeals.

He did not have to wait long to claim that second success, four overs later new batsman Habibul Bashar slashed at a full delivery outside off-stump and was well caught by Marcus Trescothick at first slip to leave Bangladesh on 24 for two with nine overs of the opening day remaining.

England had earlier named a line-up which included two new faces with Clarke and Worcestershire off-spinner Gareth Batty being given their debuts while key batsman Mark Butcher, who had been struggling with a throat infection, passed a fitness test to retain his place.

Just like in India, when they played two spinners the last time they were in the sub-continent, England adopted the same tactics with Batty chosen to team up with left-armer Ashley Giles while Harmison and Matthew Hoggard were chosen as the only specialist seamers.

Bangladesh, seeking their first Test victory at their 25th attempt, also named a newcomer in their line-up with 18-year-old left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Junior earning his reward for an impressive display against England for the BCB President's XI during the opening tour match.

1st Test, Dhaka, day four: Bangladesh v England
Full scorecard

Day four photos
Determined batting by Bangladesh gave them hope of victory over England in the first Test at Dhaka.

They were 245-6 - a lead of 153 - when the umpires suspended play because of bad light, with Mushfiqur Rahman 43 not out and Khaled Mahmud on 17.

It was a tough day for England, whose best spell came either side of lunch when they took four wickets for 42.

Hannan Sarkar (59) and Habibul Bashar (58) cleared the first innings deficit with a second wicket stand of 108.

But England will go into the final day with the view that if they can knock over the final four wickets quickly, they would still have time enough to win the game, albeit on a wearing surface offering turn and occasional low bounce.

The tourists had to wait until the final ball before lunch before achieving their first success of the day.

Bashar survived on five when he appeared to glove a catch to wicket-keeper Chris Read when he attempted to pull a ball from Matthew Hoggard.

But the luck evened itself out later in the day when Hoggard won an lbw decision against Javed Omar (27) despite the ball striking the pads via the inside edge.

England's bowling lacked inspiration during the morning, although Hoggard and Steve Harmison, in particular, shed plenty of perspiration in an effort to seperate Bashar and Sarkar.

It was not to be and Bashar dealt authoritatively with anything short of a length as he moved to a 97-ball half century - the 18th time he had passed fifty in Tests.

An error of judgment cost him his wicket to the final ball before lunch as he pushed at a wide one from Batty and slip fielder Marcus Trescothick accepted the chance at the second attempt.

Hussain's catch to dismiss Mashud was the England highlight of the day

Alok Kapali departed for 12 soon after the re-start as he skied an attempted pull to Mark Butcher at square leg and Hoggard was rewarded when Sarkar gave Trescothick his second catch of the day.

From 120-1, Bangladesh had slumped to 148-4 and they lost another wicket before tea when Khaled Mashud pushed forward to Ashley Giles and Nasser Hussain swooped to take a brilliant one-handed catch at short leg.

The match was again England's for the taking if they could press home their advantage in the final session, but with Harmison running out of steam and the spinners ineffective, Mushfiqur Rahman and Omar added 43 for the sixth wicket.

I don't think we'll lose the test, but a draw is looking more and more likely

Omar's unlucky dismissal earned umpire Asoka de Silva a verbal bashing from home fans, who maintained a wall of sound in support of their team throughout the final session.

Mushfiqur maintained his concentration and emerged from a defensive shell to cover drive Harmison to the boundary just before the close and extend Bangladesh's lead past 150.

Michael Vaughan made his highest score since becoming England captain to steer his side to a seven-wicket victory in the first Test against Bangladesh.

Vaughan hit 12 fours in his 81 not out as the tourists made 164-3 after dismissing Bangladesh for 255.

The home side added only 10 to their overnight score as Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard ran through the tail.

And the outcome was never in doubt after Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick shared an opening stand of 64.

It was a timely assertion of authority by England after being outplayed by Bangladesh over the previous two days.

The home side began on 245-6 and were looking to extend their lead of 153 well beyond 200, if possible.

It was not to be as Harmison and Hoggard snapped up two wickets each to end the innings in just nine overs.

Skipper Khaled Mahmud was first to go when he played across the line to a straight one from Harmison and was adjudged lbw for 18.

The Durham paceman struck again as Mohammad Rafique edged a low catch to Chris Read, and Mashrafe Mortaza became Hoggard's first victim of the day in the next over.

Mushfiqur Rahman was left high and dry on 46 after a 170-ball knock when Hoggard brought the innings to an end by having youngster Enamul Haque lbw for a duck.

The clouds were gathering as England began their second innings, but the threat of rain receded as Trescothick and Vaughan made a positive start.

Matthew Hoggard was rewarded for his persistence and accuracy

Fears about the wicket proved unfounded with only an occasional delivery misbehaving as they rattled up a half century stand in the 11th over.

Mahmud left it late to bring on his spinners but it paid off as Trescothick threw his wicket away for 27 by advancing out of his crease and aiming a slog at a ball from Rafique, enabling Khaled Mashud to complete an easy stumping.

Mark Butcher avoided a pair by nudging a single off Rafique, but only managed eight before the left-armer won an lbw decision with a ball which kept low.

Nasser Hussain sruvived a difficult chance at slip before he was lbw to Mortaza for 17, but Graham Thorpe joined an increasingly dominant Vaughan to see England to their target.

With the scores level, Rafique fired in an attempted yorker to Thorpe and a leg bye brought the game to an end.
