Commercial Rock and Roll Radio is on life support though.

What Mr. Keith is saying is that if you wanna be a superdupersuperstarmusicmogol type dealie, you gotta go Country because there isn't a big Rock market anymore.

OK, I'll buy that.

But Rock n Roll is still here, and it's as good now as it ever was. The only thing that has happened is that it moved back into the dirty sweaty smokey Rock n Roll clubs, and outta the arenas and stadiums. That's a good thing too, IMO.

I've been to about 20 Rock n Roll shows just this year. Some were just OK, some good, some great. But the one common thread was that it was ROCK N ROLL music being played. Most of it was NEW music. Look, just because it ain't in Rolling Stone or Spin anymore, doesn't mean that it stopped existing! I mean, isn't that what the supposition is here? Just because Rock n Roll isn't in vogue anymore...it's DEAD? That is the most ridiculos notion I've seen in a long while.

Rock n Roll in 2006 is just fine. I know that to be a fact because I've seen it with my own eyes, and heard it with my own ears. It's still out there, you just have to be willing to go find it now.

100% correct

And I might add, if anything is "dead", it's country music.

I don't know about that...NASHVILLE country is certainly dead. Even the re-injection of life Nashville got from the y'allternative movement has done fucked up and washed itself clean--see "Big and Rich" and "Gretchen Wilson, et. al.

But there's always an underground. Always has been. Even in country.

I said this the other day...when I see DBT play for 3 hours in front of just over 100 people...rock is dead...or damn close

BTW Sherat...did you make the Bluegrass festival or were you out of town?

Nope. Couldn't do it. My sister's wedding was the 7th. So I was fucked for the bluegrass thing (I had friends playing at it too) and fucked for the summit.

As usual, she is a pain in my ass.

What kind of anymal you really are?!?

Are you bullshitting me now!?!

Honky Tonk Man “Rock” is dead and rightly so. I fucking hate that term anyway. It completely puts me off. Guitar music and err, great music certainly isn’t however. The Killers currently sit proudly sit at the top of the UK album charts. Enough said.

Corgi is as usual talking bullshit when it comes to the great Oasis. They’ll be back at No 1 when they’re Best Of is released next month. It’s a purely contract related release and they’ll be back at the top YET AGAIN sometime next year with a brand new studio LP.

Yeah, it might take a little effort on your part...but that doesn't mean it's dead. Not by a long shot.

I completely agree with you. And to add, I think that rock n' roll music of today in some cases is better than it was when it was popular, because the bands do it for the fun of it. They don't play what's "in" just to get rich and famous. they play what they like to play. This also makes a lot of bands more original, I feel, because they don't have to worry about fitting into a specific commercially successful genre, so their sound isn't as limited.

We got vibrations coming up from the floor
We're just listening to the rock that's giving too much noise
Are you deaf, you wanna hear some more

We're just talkin' about the future
Forget about the past
It'll always be with us
It's never gonna die, never gonna die"

Hey Sherman, check out The Streets (a.k.a. Mike Skinner) - cool stuff, could be considered English rap.

It was a stone groove.

Eminem he ain't.

Sir Stonesalot >when I see DBT play for 3 hours in front of just over 100 people...rock is dead<

Oh I see...you are trying to tie the popularity & commercial success of Rock n Roll to it's "life". As Col. Potter would say...Horsehockey! People who get into Rock n Roll for popularity and commercial success are poseurs, and about as un-rock n roll as you can get. Sure we all would like to be well thought of and rich...but if that is your sole motivation, then yer fucked in more ways than one.

For instance, take The Chesterfield Kings. These guys have been at it, and largely unnoticed, for about 25 years. They all still have day jobs. They make enough out on the road to finance the next record. Would they like to have unlimited funds and wild popularity...sure they would. But just because they aren't doesn't mean that they are going to quit.

I'll put it like this. If you wanna say, "Rock n Roll is dead commercially." I won't argue that. But as long as bands like the Kings are out there, and as long as I'm able to buy a ticket...Rock n Roll will never be dead.

11th October 2006 07:18 PM
Trey Krimsin I think you hit the mark, SS. Because rock and roll isn't commercial doesn't mean the genre is dead. Quite frankly, rock and roll's lack of commercialism is actually good for the genre. Rap is getting repetitive and a little cliche, where you have to rap about the same damn thing and have fifty guest stars on your single and album. Country artists are sounding more like rock, and some rock acts are doing country tunes, and both royally suck ass. Other rock acts like Nickleback are attempting to be too commerical and there really isn't any originality or true talent. So, maybe it is a good thing that rock and roll isn't as accessible and commercial as it once was.

One other point: If I ever started to truly listen to Toby Keith's opinions, then I have sold my soul to our current corporate government.

Coming Down Again First off, forgive me for posting without reading the entire thread.

Rock and Roll is not dead. Is it the moneymaker it once was? No. Does it get as much airplay as it used to? No.
However, that does not mean it is dead.

There is so much INCREDIBLE rock and roll music coming out these days that it'll make your head spin. It's just not the flavour of the day.
If the Stones (or whomever) recorded Let it Bleed but it only sold 15 copies would that make it a crappy album? No fucking way! It would still be a masterpiece.

There are tons of masterpieces being recorded every year that most people don't hear.

Being unpopular doesn't make something dead.
If so, I'd never have made it through high school.

(I host a rock'n'roll show so I am a tad biased...)

All this because I said Toby Keith could suck my motherfucking clit.

Care to tell me why such an innocuous statement merits a wormtongued, yet unintelligible, attempt at flaming from you, to whom I've never spoken until this very thread?

Honey,

What's up, where's the problem?

Aren't we both openhearted, sincere persons? Just have a look on my avatar, on your "denture"?! Doesn't they perfectly match together?

Welcome on the Stones board, honey!
