Yeah, I know she's a real piece of work, but if she'd done nothing but Hole's first album, "Live Through This," she'd still be on my list.

One of the best albums of the 90s, along with Nevermind.

And later on in life she sang "when I wake up....in my makeup...." - that woman slays me, I ain't lyin.

mrhipfl whoops, my bad. well, she deserves a second mention then
6th September 2007 08:51 PM
lotsajizz I saw her for the first time in November '82 opening for the Who in Orlando. The B-52's had just been booed off the stage and driven away with bottles and debris after just four songs. The rowdy crowd then turned on Joan. She flipped 'em all off, grabbed her crotch a few times, told the bottle throwers to 'eat me!', caught a few on the fly, and generally won the crowd over so well that she not only played her complete set, but also came out for one encore!! That is one tough chick!

robpop I'll add 2 that were not mentioned.

I a quiet way this lady can sing with the best of them....
Margo Timmons (Cowboy Junkies)

and The second lady of Alternative (behind Patti Smith)...
Siouxsie Sioux

guitarman53 Tina Turner for sure at #1, I've seen both Janis Joplin & Grace Slick live, they don't come close to Tina Turner, I seen Janis in 1970 at CNE stadium as part of festival express, she was totally pissed to the eyeballs, she went on for a long time about not being able to buy booze on a sunday, she said that's when you really need a drink, I seen Grace Slick with Jefferson Airplane, but she didn't have no real personality to lead a band, there was also Marty Balin as another lead singer, but Tina Turner has been around for a long time to learn her trade, & she shows it.
Madonna is nothing more then an Icon for the gay liberation.

I second Patti Smith, Rutyer Suys, and the Deal Sisters. Carla Bozulich is in a class all her own. When she's on, there's no one more heartbreaking.
7th September 2007 03:11 PM
Saint Sway how come no ones mentioned this chick??
7th September 2007 03:15 PM
Mel Belli C'mon, people, you're missing the obvious: Mick Jagger is the best frontman and frontwoman in rock.
7th September 2007 03:42 PM
Jaggedblues Shirley Manson deserves a mention.

Janis Joplin
Pat Benatar
Ann Wilson
Shirley Manson
Billie Holiday
Etta James
Tina Turner
Rachel Fuller
whoever it was who sang with the Delphines

I suppose from strictly a T&A aspect there's always Shakira. And I like Courtney but I'd be more apt to put her on a best trainwreck frontwoman list.
