Topic: Club Show Snobbery? Return to archive Page: 1 2 3

Honky Tonk Man After reading a comment by TT on the "Tell Me" message board, i can't help but wonder whether there is a certain snobbery attached to going to these shows. I was unlucky in the sense that i did'nt get a ticket for the Astoria show, but just seeing the Stones is whats most important to me. Maybe its a big deal to the vetran fans who are only used to seeing the band in big ball parks for the past 20+ years, but to me, a Stones show is a Stones show. Reading comments like "No more stadium showes for me" just don't make sense, in my opinion.

Okay, that was a bit of a rant, right?

08-13-03 07:42 PM
Gazza fair point, but I guess it depends on your experience and what shows youve seen.

personally I dont like stadium shows and never have. I despise "festival" or "field" shows even more and would never go to one again. The only acts I'd have any interest in seeing in a stadium are the Stones and Springsteen and even after this tour, I doubt I'd go see the Stones again in one...especially as the setlists are predictable and geared towards greatest hits Ive heard over and over, the shows are short and frankly not good value for money because at the end of the day most people are paying a lot of money to watch a video screen and the sound youre going to get in such a location is really in the lap of the gods.. Stadiums arent geared towards concerts, simple as that.

that said, ive seen 4 US shows on this tour - two indoors and two outdoors - and the best gig of the four was the outdoor one in Anaheim where I had nosebleed seats. So i guess it doesnt always follow that smaller shows are always better.

theres a certain amount of elitism but the fact is that live music is more suited to smaller venues than larger ones... the bigger the venue is then the artist is more likely to have to compromise his music in favour of producing a "spectacle" to cater for those poor bastards 100 yards away who cant actually HEAR or SEE him properly. theres no substitute for seeing your favourite band in a small venue. I remember seeing my first Stones indoor show in march 1999 in Connecticut (id seen about 14 shows up to then and they were all stadiums) and that whole No Security tour was sold on the prospect of seeing the band in "intimate" venues - which is true I guess relatively speaking if you consider an 18,000 venue as intimate compared to a stadium. having seen a thatre show a couple of months later, the idea of that show being "intimate" now seems laughable.

fmk438j My dad liked The Rod Laver Arena show better than Enmore.

But me...

Although I don't think enmore was a good a show as the other clubs I've heard on disc, it was a an incredible experience.

As Mathjis said in his Olympia review, the most warhorsed of warhorses become a gift in such a small setting.

A great moment that tipified the club experience was Keith perched on the mini catwalk, one-hand Honky Tonk intro. It was raw, loud and the best thing was (and is for all club shows I guess) that you can FEEL every single being in that audience gushing with love for the guy and what he's doing at that very moment. It's communal worship at its best.

A riff you heard a million times becomes a revaltion at 2 m away. That's the truth!

marko Yes,indeed, smaller place doesnīt mean a better show.Or
even "better" set list.
But personally,i donīt wanna ever see a stadium show again.
I was bloody annoyed in Helsinki,1st of all, service around
the area was the worst possible. It was way too ho for a show. And we got muddy guitar sound,it sounded most of the
time like they were all wrong keys.Only Mick&Charlie sounded
good.I also noticed,finish audience is amricanized,that i
donīt like at all.People talkin to mobile phones, watching
balloons at the sky, hands in their pockets.I say, thats way
too good way to waste music.Also,95% of aud, didnīt know the
songs.
Munich was actually very good stadium show.Sound was
brilliant after smu.And aud was good, great, nice singing.
But it was like, still,iīve allready seen this, why bother?
I only īhave to listen a boot,i know they do on the stage.
And after Krone, stadium donīt feel anything.
If they tour again, they should only do arenas&theatres.

hmps agree. more club shows to the people!

love the setlists on this tour. they choose songs for the clubgigs as if they're really breaking up after the tour
charlie looks fit-but grey
mick looks.. like mick-but you can see he's loosing energy
keith isn't playing flawless on this tour-to much of everything
ron looks great
darryl plays real good, no doubt.

I'm still kind of sad since i did'nt get a ticket to the circus show in stockholm. the papers said it was a great show. "Classic" to quote.

Steel Wheels I saw the Stones at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia - 7th row on Keef's side. Best show I've ever seen or heard.

I wear it as a badge of honor - "Yeah, I got into one of the club shows!"

I bought my 300 dollar ticket two hours before showtime.
08-14-03 07:46 AM
Dandelion* Tower was just okay for me. It seemed more like watching a play. Very controlled. I was happy that the person I went with loved it and said it was one of the best shows he had ever seen. I actually had more fun at the stadium show. I was in the front row and there was A lot of pushing mob mosh pit stuff. It seemed more like a club show.
08-14-03 04:09 PM
TT I saw 36 Stones shows this life, and it is true: the smaller the shows were, the more intimate and better it was for me. My opinion. I had the luck to see them at 2 arenas this tour, two stadiums, one field and one club. Ahoy tomorrow, Vredenburg club on Saturday. And the ranking is from Olympia down to Oberhausen field. Itīs just MY opinion! And I think I can judge what I like.

Donīt call it snobbish to go to these shows. Itīs snobbish to get there for free just because you are a "VIP" and the diehards have to wait outside. Iīve been waiting for my clubshows for 21 years. And it was bloody hard work to get them, being online for 3 days etc.

thats a good point. practically everyone who got tickets for these shows had to go the extra mile (or 1.6 km if you live in continental europe) to get those tickets - whether it was on the day of the sale or via the pre-sales. (Im excluding the other 'free' or 'elitist' methods..lol) damn right we appreciate the intimacy of these shows.

Steel Wheels - I'm intrigued as to how your ticket for the Tower cost $300. I thought they were about $50
08-15-03 02:02 AM
Steel Wheels Gazza, you may have missed the fact that I bought my ticket two hours before the show started.

That's two hours before the show started.

As in - two hours before the 9pm show started.

Money is just paper when these chances come up.

I bought the ticket off of a Stones insider.

08-15-03 08:30 AM
stonedinaustralia i wouldn't call it snobbery HTM, well not from me anyway - and it behoves those of us fortunate to see such a show to be humble in our privilege and good fortune

i was lucky, no doubt, but i'd put a lot of time (years) and effort (mega-ergs) into making sure i was in that place and time - tho still, it was so much good luck i still haven't gotten over it

as for the show - dandy called it a play - well i can see the point but for mine it was a little deeper than that - a passion play perhaps - certainly it was a gathering of the faithfull (or those with the cash to buy their indulgence)to bare witness to the band's existence and went beyond simple notions of "entertainment"

i saw an arena show too - it some ways that was more enjoyable - i was right on the side of the stage and a long way up (where, fortunately, i wasn't being constantly distracted by those dreadful video machines)and i just "relaxed" so to speak and enjoyed the show and great show it was too - basically i got what i paid for and what i thought i was going to get

i bought my ticket for the arena show the day before the show and i always knew that i would get one and without even getting into a sweat about it - the enmore was completely different - in retrospect - like sex and drugs in a way - with those tickets the biggest rush (well, almost) was actually making the score and all that followed was the endgame - that's a bit of an exaggeration but not by much - i tell you, i can still feel the wave of relief that passed through me when i received the confirmation of my purchase - however, the notable thing with the enmore was , in the end, i got far more than i paid for or expected to get

and i have rocks off to thank for that
08-15-03 08:46 AM
Factory Girl I've only seen the stones in stadiums and arenas, and I much more prefer arenas. I would love to see the Stones in a club, just the proximity to the boys would give me goosebumps. I was in a front row for Keith & X-pensive Winos show-that was cool.

08-15-03 10:24 AM
jb Funny, I really enjoyed the Atlanta stadium show more than the arena shows I went to ..something about the energy of 50,000 (well more like 42,000) people .....also, many more lose chicjks who get fucked up at the stadium venue and are willing to make out with you or rub your dick....

Phog There's certainly an elitist mentality with some fans about the theater shows. I was lucky enough to see the Stockholm Cirkus show, but I'm more humbled by it than anything. I went there for me, not so I could rub it in people's faces.
I'd be happy to go see the boys in a stadium again. Here's hoping the chance presents itself in the States later this year. Sure, I'd prefer the arena or theater. I'll gladly take the stadium, though.
08-15-03 11:23 AM
jb I feel a certain sense of snobbery having almost 5k posts..

Joey

Many of the arena shows on this tour were BETTER than Club gigs ( please see 02/01/03 Denver gig ) :

I must admit , the PCenter that evening never had the feel of a large , turgid , turbid , luxury - box - riddled " United Center " arena as Keith and Ronnie were truly thunderous -- nailing tune after tune with ferocity like I've never seen. Keith was impeccable at carrying and holding everything together, while Ronnie was able to shine on tunes he nailed like Can't You Hear Me Knocking. It truly appeared as though everyone on that stage was having just as good a time as the 20,000 ridiculously lucky audience members were.

" Feel Me Ronnie "

JACKY !!!!!!!!

No need to be a smartarse. what confused me was the fact you said it was a "$300 ticket" (which would suggest it was the price actually ON the ticket). If you'd said you'd bought it off a scalper or "insider" or whatever, the penny would have dropped. It was a logical question to ask

08-15-03 08:48 PM
Sir Stonesalot Damn right I rub people's noses in the fact that I was at the monumental Roseland show. Not to be snobbish though...more like showing off a special award or something. Or like showing off a cool new hot rod, or toy. It's just such a cool thing...why WOULDN'T I be proud of the fact that I got to see the Stones do "She Smiled Sweetly"?!? I got to see a unique part of Stones lore...damn right I'm proud of that! And I want everyone to know it.

I was so disappointed when I tried and failed to get tickets for Tower or Roseland. Then out of the blue, Sir Moonie emails me and says he scored 2 for Roseland, and wanted ME to be his guest. Talk about from the outhouse to the penthouse! That show will always represent to me a bond of Stonesian brotherhood cooked over a fire in a back yard in Berea OH. Roseland IS a special moment in my life, and I will always treasure it. I am not ashamed to admit that. If that makes me a snob, then so be it.
08-15-03 09:13 PM
gypsy SS, you should get a spanking for being such a braggart and a snob. Come over tonight...
08-16-03 08:08 AM
Steel Wheels The biggest scam running was that the people who worked for the band would buy up all of the available seats and sell them outside the venue, or direct you to the hotel and you'd buy them there. God bless 'em.

But the best thing was that the seats were close - anything in the first ten rows are a thing dreams are made of for me at least.
08-16-03 05:38 PM
Gazza Thanks for clarifying. dont blame you snappin' it up.

altho' from recent events its been quite clear theres a few people on the inner circle doing some 'rogue trading' on this tour. Its just a shame that for many people its the only way they can get these tickets
08-17-03 01:17 AM
Steel Wheels I see it as follows -

The club shows are the lengendary shows of their career. Returning to their roots, burning the house down every night...yeah man. Rock and Roll Kings on stage doing things their way for their truly devoted fans.

When I tell people they say, "On my! You got in? How? You lucky bastard! I would have killed 20 people to get in!"

And there I was - dancing for the band, singing along, getting high from their energy, thanking them after each song, and otherwise having the BEST TIME OF MY FUCKING LIFE.

Yeah, I was there. Consider me a snob as well.

Wow! Impressive. Is Rocks Off planning any kind of commemorative ceremony the day JB rolls over to 5000?
08-17-03 09:01 AM
Monkey Woman Club shows are not automatically better in terms of the band's playing. But the sound of a place designed for concerts is obviously better that in sports arenas or of course open-air fields and stadiums! The closeness to the band is another bonus: everybody in the audience has a good view and clear sound, there's no bad seat in the house. You feel you are in a coccoon, part of something special.

But even a stadium show can be a memorable experience, like I had in Marseille, with a wonderful enthusiastic crowd, and the band responding to it.

Gazza >Wow! Impressive. Is Rocks Off planning any kind of commemorative ceremony the day JB rolls over to 5000?

yes..we're going to shoot him.
But its a secret, dont tell anyone.
08-17-03 01:59 PM
Highwire Rob What is JB's new avatar all about?

Is this part of the trivia questions?

I say it's JB circa '77 under an outside shower on a kibbutz.

Or is it just a porn clip?

ajbp Hi-I have now seen the Stones 18 times. I was fortunate to see them a year ago at Palais Royale, 1st row, in front of Keith. I caught Keith's pick. This was the most exciting show ever. Club show snobbery? I would see the Stones from any vantage point because they are the best.

No , only when he ACTUALLY rolls over himself.
