Topic: Great Stones songs that should've been classics? Return to archive Page: 1 2
08-15-03 12:53 AM
TheSavageYoungXyzzy Suppose you had to pick, say, five or so songs, officially released, that should've been hits or instant classics. What would they be?

I mention this because I ran through Tattoo You again tonight, and am currently blasting through Undercover. I've got my five, I think.

1. "No Use In Crying" - Most underrated song ever, as of now, anyway. Just a sweet little ballad. Like a reggae version of "Love In Vain". Almost enough to turn me into a Side-Two-of-Tattoo-You-Cultist.

2. "Short And Curlies" - You know you love it. You know you want to sing along. Every person I've played this for has loved it and immediately goes "Who did this? It's *awesome*!"

3. "2000 Man" - "That LSD-drenched Bob Dylan cover". Except the Stones wrote it. On an album with not a lot to really sit down and say "Yes, this is quite good and worthy of being put somewhere other than here," it's one of the songs that should've made the cut but didn't.

4. "Pretty Beat Up" - Say what you like about him. Ronnie writes some pretty fucking awesome riffs.

5. "Too Tight" - Pretty much the sequel to "Too Tough", which also doesn't get the credit it deserves. But this was a bona fide Stones rocker on an album a lot of people blasted for not having one.

There're plenty more, including most of It's Only Rock'n'Roll, but those were the ones that kinda stuck out.

-tSYX --- You used to make me tear my heart out, baby...

Zeeta With you on this mate your posts are always spot on!

Tops - soooooooo good, really is I love it. The verses are awesome. Maybe I am I Side 2 Tattoo You cultist then?

Hide Your Love - amazing piano, love Mick's "ogh yeah! ohh yeah!"

Lies - Good guitar lines - response to the punk stuff at the time. "Lies, lies, you dirty Jezebel
Why, why, why, why don't you go to hell?"

Brand New Car - Don't know why really but I dig lots "Mmm, smells like caviar" WTF does caviar smell like? I can't imagine it smelling pleasant!! Fishy Sugar! Keith plays bass too which is always a bonus. Love the way it starts also with Charlie smacking the snare.

She's So Cold - was it a hit anyway 'cos they played it live on 81/2 tours? Dunno - but mainly I love it because of Bill's bass on 3.30 ACE!

So there you have it - I have just cited my favourite non played / unusual Stones tune of the moment!
Hope this is OK

dealer squealing 1:If You Canīt Rock Me
Great song, fantastic dirty sleasy singing from Jagger.

2. Wanna Hold You.
Catchy song with great guitar from Woody and Keith
in perfect form on vocals.

3. She Smiled Sweetly.
Beutiful song, perfect.

4. Through the Lonely Nights.
I always get angry thinking WHY this song did not make it on album?!? Just brilliant song and performance from each and everybody.

5. Donīt Stop. Just look at how this song is like one of the other wharhorses in the tour set list.

hmps - she smiled sweetly
so beautiful so sweet

- sway
gotta love the way it sweeps through your room.. like a hurricane (isn't it already a classic?)

- jig-saw puzzle
a bit dylan-ich vocals. dig that.. nice slide guitar work, folkish bas line. love it

- no use in crying/tops
can't decide. both are great.

- new faces (voodoo)
kind of simple. but so nice listen too

- if you can't rock me
underrated. the wah-wah in the intro is awsome. the "break" kind of sucks though

jb Out of Tears-as I previously posted, if this came out by Aerosmith, it would have one of those power ballads that they are so fond of...
Love is Strong-IMHO, their best song since Start Me Up...

"Almost Hear You Sigh" is another gem

Nasty Habits B Side Bonanza

1. Who's Driving Your Plane? - with its gallumphing skewed rhythm and it's brutal lyrics this song closes the psycho-single era nicely and brings it all back home with its kinda bluesness. Considered a classic to pre-White Stripes destructo blues players like Pussy Galore, Honeymoon Killers, and etc. Just genius.
2. Through the Lonely Nights -- Captures the wasted magnificence I guess Goat's Head was going for perfectl and to me succeeds more than ANY ballad on that record. Jimmy Miller's swan song w/the group
3. Had It with You - The filthiest and most evil song the Stones have cut since maybe Turd on the Run. SPECTACULAR rock climax to a deeply troubling LP. On 45 RPM it REALLY shakes it up.
4. The Storm - Love the B-sides to Voodoo Lounge and Steel Wheels more than any of the overblown statements on the official records. I prefer their toss it over the shoulder approach to when they actually work (although truth to tell I was hoping for more when I heard that was their method for doing the 40 Licks tracks). Probably the main diff is they now cut their b-side sessions after they've been a band awhile, and so the sound coheres without getting too uptight. This is the best track I've heard from the Voodoo Lounge session, and its dual slide guitar/vocal hook is actually quite musically interesting and a new thing for the Stones. Cool track.
5. Dandelion -- Love that song. Love that melody. Love those drums at the end.

Nasty Habits Addendum --

A properly recorded Saint of Me, released as the first single from B2B, should have chopped the tarts the world over, esp. in America.

"What a cock up, Ronnie!"

jb Yes Moonie, unquestionably Sway and Loving Cup should have been huge...there are times I replay Sway 3 or 4 times in a row just to hear Mick scream right before the lines"One day I woke up to find, right in the bed next to mine....."

sirmoonie Thats classic stuff Josh. I remember the first time I hear Sway, Mick's screaming just jumped out at me. Still have no idea what he's trying to say, "Paaaiiiiin iz the hey, hey now!!....One day I woke up....."
08-15-03 12:50 PM
jb Yeh,...I can't make it out either, but it is very uncharacteristic of Mick and it is quite satisfying...

songs that weren't released, nut should have been:
Criss Cross Man
the slow, drawn out "You Got Me Rockin'" found on Keith's Voodoo Lounge

for years now I have enjoyed side2 of Tattoo You more than side1 (although that is a damn good side)...

I am with you guys regarding Sway, Loving Cup and Love is Strong (great video, too). Wasn't the problem with Sway that it is all Mick T. and Jagger? Phish used to rip Loving Cup apart during their encores.
