Good one, didn't catch it.
Remember how much of a bang that album/tour had.
It had to be in the millions.
Maybe they got Flashpoint and SW switched. |

Glencar,
Those are the albums sold for Steel Wheels since June 1991. That's when Billboard started using the Soundscan method of counting album sales. So, just based on post '91 sales, Some Girls would have went platinum again. Cool. I'm still amazed by how much Jump Back has sold. Why do you think there has been so many sales of High Tide and Green Grass? Thanks Soldatti. |
|
glencar |
Nah, Flashpoint seems accurate for a live album from that period. I remember it actually got airplay when it came out. Nowadays, you don't hear anything from the live releases. Steel Wheels was probably missing an extra zero. Joey probably took it! |

glencar |
Oh, thanks mmdog! It shows that Steel Wheels has held up rather poorly. |

yes, mmdog already corrected me. I looked at the list from the bottom up & that was the first low total I saw. It stood out because it was so much less than Flashpoint. |

Just fucking awful,,,but yes, the post 91 explain it know...thank you. |

It was a popular catalog seller during 1991-1997. Nice cheap compilation, just like Through The Past Darkly. |

Glencar,
Actually, Steel Wheels is in the middle of the pack. Voodoo Lounge, Bridges To Babylon and A Bigger Bang are three studio albums released during the Soundscan era. So they are excluded from the following list. Here is the ranking of the studio albums back catalog sales since 1991, based on Soldatti's info.
1. Some Girls 1,158,000
2. Sticky Fingers 1,078,000
3. Let It Bleed 903,000
4. Exile On Main Street 707,000
5. Tatoo You 596,000
6. Beggars Banquet 527,000
7. Goat's Head Soup 329,000
8. It's Only Rock n Roll 246,000
9. Aftermath 243,000
10. Emotional Rescue 222,000
11. Steel Wheels 211,000
12. Black and Blue 208,000
13. At Their Satanic Majesties Request 168,000
14. Out Of Our Heads 124,000
15. Between The Buttons 116,000
16. England's Newest Hitmakers 104,000
17. 12 X 5 85,000
18. Now 78,000
19. December's Children 72,000
20. Undercover 67,000
21. Dirty Work 66,000
I'm a little surprised about Undercover. Soldatti, since Flashpoint is missing it's first five weeks on your list, I would guess it's total is over a million. Will it be certified platinum soon?

I can't believe UC & DW did so poorly. America doesn't have very good taste. |

worldwide, I think it was the biggest selling studio album of the band's career - passing Sticky Fingers.
Tattoo You may have eventually outsold it, though
Must admit it gives me a bit of a laugh when people (including Mick at one of the Aussie shows) talk about "Sway" and "Worried about you" as being 'obscure' songs
I'm absolutely amazed at Soldatti's list to see Voodoo Lounge selling more than any of the other studio albums, although I suppose as its only from 1991 onwards that would explain a lot. Comparing its sales to ABB shows how the Stones fanbase has eroded in the space of a decade
The appeal of Jump Back in the US baffles me entirely as it has almost the same track listing as disc 2 of the already multi platinum and recently released 40 Licks. It sold well when it was released here, but that was in 1993 and 40 Licks basically renders it as redundant. Augurs badly that the band's major sales these days are in repackages

well they didnt tour behind either record, so sales-wise the albums wouldnt have had any 'legs' |

They both sold several hundred thousand copies each BEFORE 1991, so the actual sales for each are closer to a million.

And both of them sold as well as albums like Black and Blue and IORR did when they were originally released.

22 million albums since 1991 is not awful. Those are impressive numbers and you can double those numbers if you include worldwide sales. As for career numbers, they've sold almost 70 million in the US alone. Double that-at least-for worldwide sales. Not bad at all.

so was VL or SG their best selling album ever??
the appeal of Jump Back for me personally is that it is apretty definitive 1 disc greatest hits; I also prefer the version of Bitch on Jump Back to the one on SF - the recording/mastering seems different |

it is... Hence remastering of all the post Klein stuff is needed. |
|

They did remaster them in 1994. |

And now technology has advanced making those inferior to the releases of Sucking and Jump Back and even 40 Licks. I've done the side by side!
Sell me the same product again, please! |

Some Girls and Tattoo You have both sold more than Voodoo Lounge, so it would be one of those two. I would guess that Sticky Fingers has as well. I think Voodoo Lounge's worldwide sales were around 5 million. SG and TY would be about 8 million perhaps. No doubt Soldatti can give you better info!

yeah, but like me, you live in the UK. We had Jump Back released in 1993. At the time it was the most comprehensive of the post-1970 compilations. It wasnt available in the US until 2004, which was after 40 Licks came out. Considering how great the sales were for 40 Licks, I'm amazed there was a market for Jump Back. |

About Undercover and Dirty Work... it's all the bad press. Both albums are the most overlooked releases for the casual fans and many of the hard cores too. Don't ask why they didn't perform a song of DW since 1990.
About Flashpoint, the album has sold more than 1 million. During the first 5 weeks on chart (Soundscan's missing weeks) the album charted at 39-18-16-19-23.
Some albums need quick re-certification:
The whole 60's catalog (some certifications are 39-40 years old!)
Exile: 2x Platinum at least
Love You Live: Platinum
Singles Collection: 2x Platinum (600/700k x3)
Flashpoint: Platinum
Forty Licks: 5x Platinum (2.6 x 2)
Jump Back: Platinum
If their catalog gets a decent update, they'll be at #8 on the all time US list. |
