40 years worth??
You'd think they could have at least got around to reclassifying "Englands newest hitmakers" by now!! |

The RIAA is 2 88-yr-old men. They'll get to it in due course. Plus all this hip hop stuff has created a backlog. |

so was VL or SG their best selling album ever??
Their best selling album ever is Hot Rocks.
Some Girls sold more than 10m worldwide and Tattoo You around 8 million. According to Mick, VL sold 5.5 million.
Forty Licks sold 5.5 million between Oct. 2002 and March 2003 (EMI's year end numbers). Since then, the album did another 400k in the States and much more in Europe.
6.5/7 m of Forty Licks is the actual number.
Here is the list with albums over 5 m. worldwide:
1. Hot Rocks (+10m)
2. Some Girls (+10m)
3. Tattoo You (+8m)
4. Forty Licks (+6.5m)
5. Voodoo Lounge (+5.5m)
6. Sticky Fingers (+5m)
7. Big Hits (+5m)
8. Steel Wheels (+5m)
9. Goats Head Soup (+5m) |

You need to pay them to get a certification, around $1.000 for each Gold album and $2.000 for each Platinum award. Obviously, neither ABCKO or EMI are interested by now. |

well they didnt tour behind either record, so sales-wise the albums wouldnt have had any 'legs'
True. However I am not sure that a 1986 tour would have any effect on sales in say 1993. That's why this list is cool. It is a good way to see how the albums stack up, without other factors like whehter they toured the album or not creeping in.
On another note, Soundscan does not double count, double albums. Only the RIAA does that, when they certify. That means Hot Rocks, 40 Licks and Live Licks are actual sales, they aren't doubled.

I'm proud of that. Look what does sell to 98% of the consumer music market. The less sales, is usually a sign of something really good. |

most records sell the strongest at/near their original release, Exile was panned at that point, it was not until afterwards that it was acknowledged as the work of art we now know it is. |

Here is the list for Best Of's and Live Albums. Flashpoint,Jump Back,Stripped,No Security,40 Licks,Live Licks and Rarities excluded since they released after 1991.
Back catalog sales since 1991 (Best Of's and Live albums)
1. Hot Rocks 2,2356,000
2. Through The Past Darkly 668,000
3. High Tides and Green Grass 597,000
4. Singles Collection 327,000
5. Get Your Ya's Ya's Out 317,000
6. Rewind 220,000
7. Love You Live 159,000
8. Flowers 151,000
9. More Hot Rocks 125,000
10. Got Live If You Want It 116,000
11. Made In The Shade 74,000
12. Metamorphis 38,000
13. Sucking In The Seventies 26,000
I guess the big shocker on this list is Rewind. Virgin pulled it from the market in 1994, and it has yet to reappear. So it sold all of those copies from 91-94.

this is very "Beatle'esque" to have so many Greatest hits packages.....We all should be humiliated. |

Soldatti,
Interesting information, as usual...What happened to Exile on Main Street's 3x platinum cert. by the RIAA...It seems to have been "decertified" to merely platinum... |

It was a mistake from RIAA's database, I got an e-mail from them. The album is only Platinum by now. |

My guess (US market):
1.2m 1972-1991
715k 1991-2006 (real numbers actually) |
|
glencar |
Wow & I bought about 4 or 5 of 'em. |

I am seriously considering leaving the board . |

Those numbers reflect a fantastic career spanning several decades - in fact, the Stones have weathered each successive change in musical culture far better than nearly all their contemporaries.
Perhaps some of you don't understand basic economics - those numbers are really quite impressive.
What an amazing band...

I can't believe how many units of ABB have sold
|

Or more to the point, how many copies it HASNT sold.
The remastered cd's in 1994 would have boosted the sales quite alot. Many older fans bought their 1st Stones cd's when they got released. |

It shipped 1 million at least, so 450k are on stores still. |

Garth Brooks is about to move up to take over the all time #1 spot from Elvis the King. Garthy's been selling 5 disc sets for next to nothing just to pad his totals. Talk about friends in low places.
