Some Guy Kravitz kept joint he'd shared with Jagger

Singer Lenny Kravitz says he kept a marijuana joint he'd shared with Mick Jagger, for a year as a tribute.

Kravitz said he'd kept the joint because he was such a fan of the Rolling Stones frontman.

However, the remainder of the valued souvenir went up in smoke a year later after he ran out of dope.

Kravitz told Croatian magazine Gloria: "We were performing on the same stage once, and he invited me to go to his place afterwards.

"We talked the entire night, and smoked marijuana. We shared a joint, and I kept the rest of it for almost a year. It was a sign of respect."

Kravitz said his respect though great was not enough - and his souvenir of Jagger went up in smoke.

"At one point I had no grass at home, so I smoked the rest of the joint I shared with Jagger," he added.

Nasty Habits Bob Dylan to blow out birthday candles with St. John's gig

CBC News

Music legend Bob Dylan will celebrate his next birthday with a little salt water nearby.

Dylan, who turns 67 on May 24, will perform that evening at Mile One Centre in St. John's.

Tickets for the concert go on sale Saturday morning.

Dylan, who has sold nearly 100 million albums throughout his career, continues to tour around the world.

His recording career is as strong as ever. His latest release — 2006's Modern Times — was one of the best-reviewed albums of the year and topped some musical sales charts.

Dylan will also perform in Saint John, N.B., Moncton and Halifax in a Canadian tour beginning May 19.

Dylan is not the only music icon playing St. John's that week. Leonard Cohen, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this month, will play three dates May 26-28.

Transgender Man's Baby May Have Health Problems
Experts Debate the Long-Term Effects of Testosterone on Eggs
By AINA HUNTER
March 26, 2008 —

Among the important issues raised by the pregnancy of Oregonian Thomas Beatie is whether a female-to-male transgender person who becomes pregnant might be endangering the fetus, especially someone like Beatie, who has been taking testosterone for at least 10 years.

There's very little research on the subject to date, and some experts are at odds about it. Dr. Charles Garramoni, a Florida plastic surgeon who specializes in female-to-male transgender surgery (but was not involved in Beatie's case), said the chances of complications are probably slim.

"As long as he is under the strict care of a endocrinologist, as long he has hadn't just gotten the testosterone from the Internet or something, as long as the endocrinologist says everything is OK, there's no reason to think otherwise."

But Michael Bartalos -- a New York geneticist and internist who works with many transgender patients -- said that he would be concerned about the health of the eggs in Beatie's body.

Because women are born with all the eggs they will carry for life, long-time exposure to chemicals or hormones can have an adverse effect. Any possible damage done by 10 years of testosterone would be irreversible, he said.

And even if Beatie's baby is born healthy, he said, "Who knows what might happen to her in 20 years? [The baby] could be at higher risk for certain types of cancer development."

Beatie, a small-business owner, created a stir this week after announcing he is six months pregnant. Beatie, who was born female, underwent sexual reassignment surgery 10 years ago but, like many transgender people, kept his reproductive organs intact.

Another issue is whether Beatie and others like him could be setting their children up for playground misery and years upon years on a psychiatrist's couch. But Katherine Rachlin, a psychologist who works with transgender people and their families, believes this worry is unfounded, if understandable.

"People often ask that question about transgender parents in general, but research shows that the children adjust fine," Rachlin said.

Rachlin said that she understands the reservations of people who have never been around transgender families, but said that in a case such as Beatie's, the little girl will have what appears to be an ideal life: financially stable parents who really wanted her from the start.

At any rate, it's "very likely that other children won't even know about the particulars of her birth."

Garramoni, who started changing female bodies into male bodies three years ago and has seen more than 100 patients, put it succinctly: "The kids understand. They just know that -- they say, these are my parents."

In a first-person article for The Advocate, a leading gay, lesbian, transgender magazine, Beatie said that his wife, Nanc,y was unable to bear children following a hysterectomy, so they made the decision that he would be artificially inseminated and carry the child.

Having children after sexual reassignment is not as unusual a decision as one might think, Garramoni said.

"It's certainly not unprecedented. Many people want to have their own child, or at least keep that option open," he said.

In many states, he added, adopting a child as a transgender person can be difficult or even unlawful.

"So when patients say they want to do that, I say 'great,'" Garramoni said. "People think trangendered are mixed-up, unstable people, but in my office we know that they are usually the most stable, grounded patients we have. They follow instructions, and the outcomes are usually positive."

The unknown risk factor aside, experts agree that stable, grounded people often make good parents.

"When a child has loving parents, in many ways she has it all. In many ways this child will be a privileged child," Rachlin said.

Starbuck happy birthday to our resident bandwith waster.

as a fitting tribute to the master of useless posting, we all indeed should post at least one nonsensical off topic post, ala nasty and monkey man above.

Dakota Abbott, 16, edged Samantha Phillips, 17, to become Miss Outdoors 2008 in February in Maryland's Eastern Shore region's annual beauty-contest-and-muskrat-skinning festival.

The two were the only beauty contestants (out of eight) who entered both competitions. Abbott won her skinning division, but while she sang a song for the judges, Phillips won the talent trophy by skinning a muskrat on stage.

"I'll be honest," she said to a Washington Post reporter. "I can't sing. I can't dance, and I don't play any musical instruments."

But she took her 4-inch blade, sticking it just above the tail, and sliced. "You want to take your knuckles and separate the meat from the hide, just like this," she told the judges, with her hand inside the muskrat (as one of the judges recoiled in shock). [Washington Post, 3-1-08]

Condoleezza Rice Rice asks SKorea to lift US beef import restrictions

WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged South Korea to lift import restrictions on US beef to help facilitate a free trade agreement signed by the two allies.

'The United States believes that our beef is safe and that the markets ought to be open to it all around the world,' Rice told reporters with her South Korean counterpart Yu Myung-Hwan at her side after extensive talks in Washington.

'And this has been a trade issue and we are very desirous of having beef accepted in markets, as should be the case, given its safety and our adherence to international standards concerning beef production and shipment,' she said.

Yu agreed that beef had been 'a longstanding trade issue' between the two countries 'and I hope the issue will be resolved as soon as possible' through a meeting of technical experts.

The beef issue is not technically part of the US-South Korea Free Trade Agreement signed last year but is a major irritant in bilateral trade ties. US legislators have vowed to dump the free trade pact if the issue was not resolved.

South Korea in 2006 ended a total ban on US beef imports, imposed in 2003 due to concerns over mad cow disease. But it allows only meat from cattle aged 30 months or less, and excludes bones and other materials deemed to carry a risk of spreading the disease.

It has suspended imports several times after discovering banned material in US meat shipments.

The World Animal Health Organisation had ruled last May that all types of US beef are safe for export, and Seoul had repeatedly promised to accept its recommendations.

South Korea was once the third largest market for US beef, with imports worth 850 million dollars a year before the ban in 2003.

Rice said she and her South Korean counterpart also discussed the free trade agreement, which she hoped 'to see completed and passed' by Congress.

'We agreed that Korea-US FTA will provide an important institutional framework to expand national interest of both countries,' Yu said.

The agreement is the biggest US free-trade deal since the 1993 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Washington believes if approved by Congress, it would trigger a wave of trade liberalization and economic reforms throughout Asia, where it has such pacts only with Singapore and Australia.
