Monkey Woman Stonesdoug on Shidoobee gave a link to a blow by blow account. Here's a few details:

http://www.cleveland.com/newslogs/rockhall/index.ssf?/mtlogs/cleve_rockhall/archives/2004_03.html

11:30 p.m.
ZZ Top attire tonight: They are wearing blue suits and knit caps (and of course the usual beards) The crowd gets into the set as they break out hit song "Tush."

Though lively - this crowd was definitely more into Bob Seger. There's a little dancing in the aisles from the obvious fans, but the seated crowd is looking a bit subdued (or is it tired)?

11:27 p.m.
To quote an audience member (and ZZ Top fan) here in the audience: "Cleveland loves to rock and roll"

That was certainly clear during Bob Seger's set.

As ZZ Top takes the stage I'm sure we'll see more of that "rockin'" audience from the band's fans.

11:26 p.m.
"After spending 35 years together, we still dig doing it" says ZZ Top in their acceptance speech. ZZ Top gave arguably the shortest acceptance speech of the night. Just a quick statement for each member.

11:23 p.m.
Keith Richards takes the stage in a very bright rainbow bandana (across his forehead) to induct ZZ Top. "No notes, ten bucks" says Keith as he reaches in his pocket and pulls out some money "It's only rock and roll," he says.

Keith stammers a bit as he tries to find the words to induct ZZ with. He thanks "all the lovers," "Prince of kicking it off"

"This is a solid band," Keith Richards says.

And on come the boys from ZZ Top.

11:18 p.m.
ZZ Top is next in line. That means George Harrison will be the final inductee tonight. ZZ is known for not only its blues-rock sound, but also for its very recognizable beards. (at least on all but one of the members).

11:13 p.m.
"Old Time Rock & Roll" has the crowd on its feet dancing and clapping. (and in a few cases hugging)

10:47 p.m.
While we're waiting for the Dells to take the stage, here's a rundown of who's left tonight (in no particular order): George Harrison, Bob Seger and ZZ Top.

9:55 p.m.
The crowd goes wild (especially the two fans behind me:-) for the video montage of Jackson Brown, including a clip from The Simpsons featuring Browne.

Bruce Springsteen, already an inductee in the hall of fame, is presenting the award for Browne.

9:55 p.m.
"This has been one of the greatest nights of my life," says Jann Wenner.

9:50 p.m.
Jann gives props to Bob Dylan for his role in his life and his music. Bob played guitar once with Jann's son.

Jann kisses Ahmet on the cheek "When Mick and I were young kids, you were my hero" jokes Ahmed (who is quite a bit older than Jann [Ertegun is 80!]). And he thanks Mick saying "You and Keith still have the greatest rock and roll band." (Thank you Amhet!!!)

And Jann goes on...

9:48 p.m.
Jann Wenner talks about the movie "Almost Famous" and its true-to-life story.

Thanks his mom and father for the "startup money and the genes" And he's thanking his kids as well. And to Matt, his life partner. Jann is the godfather to one of Yoko's sons.

9:40 p.m.
Jann Wenner is taking the stage to the song "Do you believe in Magic?"

He says he started the magazine as a "hopped up rock fan" His first record was "Rock around the clock" but "The Beatles changed my world."

He lists all the many bands he saw in San Francisco for $2 a concert, like Airplaene. He was in a band as a guitarist in college called "The Helping Handout" He started a newspaper called the "Sardine" in college.

Jann is now running down his list of thanks. Ralph Gleason, co-founder, and others.

9:32p.m.
Nix that - Mick Jagger just took the stage to present to Jann Wenner the award. "He respresents people that love music" says Mick. He says when he first came to America things were very different - magazines like "Tiger Beat" asked questions like "Do you prefer blondes or brunettes?" Innocence & triviality. Jann Wenner put music in the limelight, says Jagger. It expanded to include politics, drugs, kidnapping, etc. Rock performer were treated as "third-class citizens" but Rolling Stone changed that by inventing the very long interview, says Mick.

Mick recalls that Jann was going to do a very long interview with him. [In 1995. A great read.]

The magazine came to define rock journalism, says Mick. The covers of rock icon photos by well-known photogs and illustrators also made the magazine.

Jann remains young by "being interested in the now"

9:29 p.m.
Ahmet Ertegun (a founder of the rock hall) is presenting the award to Jann Wenner. Early rumors that Mick Jagger would be the presenter for Jann appear to have been false. He says that Jann "realized the importance of the oncoming surge of rock music."

The local crowd is talking amongst themselves quite loudly at this point. Though Jann is deserving of the induction (in my opinion) he is obviously a less popular pick than the performers.

9:25 p.m.
Jann Wenner is the next to be inducted. He is the only non-performer to be inducted with the class of 2004. Wenner is co-founder, editor and publisher of Rolling Stone magazine and has been a force behind the creation of the rock hall.

Rolling Stone was very innovative at the time. Wenner brought out the tie between politics and music. Wenner still believes that "music is a force for good" he says in the pre-recorded video montage.

9:25 p.m.
Jann Wenner is the next to be inducted. He is the only non-performer to be inducted with the class of 2004. Wenner is co-founder, editor and publisher of Rolling Stone magazine and has been a force behind the creation of the rock hall.

8:48 p.m.
Andre 3000 and Big Boy from OutKast and Alicia Keys take the stage to induct Prince. Alicia Keys is wearing a sequined black and silver low-cut dressed with cutouts in the front, while Andre 3000 is in true form with a blue and mint green argyle sweater and a cowboy hat.

Andre 3000 says his favorite cousin introduced him to Prince. He says it wasn't until he started to make music that he realized what Prince really brought to the game. Big Boy says Prince is a true inspiration for him. "He's been an inspiration to Outkast"

8:41 p.m.
Prince's microphone is shaped like a pistol - so he is singing into the neck of the gun. Prince is a first time nominee for the Rock Hall of Fame.

He's raising the roof (literally with his hands in the air) as he steps back in time to an earlier Prince era with the song "Kiss" He has a full brass section backing him on the stage in New York City.

Monkey Woman The better part of these affairs is undoubtedly the jam. BTW, from an article posted on Shidoobee, Mick was tired because of too many parties. Maybe that's why he didn't stay and sing.

I've a few of those old HOF superstar bun-fights on video and whilst the concept of all those guys playing together sounds great, the reality is usually a musical shambles. Best to stick with the nice photos that usually come out of them instead!

I found this fascinating tidbit from Foxnews.com:

"Nevertheless, there were some grand moments in the four-hour show, with Mick Jagger doing the honors inducting the only non-performer of the night, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner. It was thanks to Wenner that the room had some extra celebrity sizzle. He had the Stones, plus Yoko, and Sean Lennon with his new girlfriend, actress Leelee Sobieski, among his guests. Wenner also had his wife Jane, who founded Rolling Stone with him, plus their three sons and his live-in boyfriend, Matt Nye. Wenner has always been cutting edge, and last night was no exception."

Prodigal Son Wait, he has an ex-wife and three kids? He must've only made the transition in his later years. Well, he seems to really love Mick too.

Factory Girl Jackson Browne & the Eagles are in RRHF, but Johnny Winter & Iggy Pop are not.

RRHF is not about talent and influence, but about politics.

Monkey Woman Jumping Jack posted today on Shidoobee a funny and insightful article on what Mick and Keith said at the RnR HoF celebration. For one thing, Mick did talk to Keith, sharing a joke. The Twins show no sign of getting tired of each other, folks!

Mick and Keith's RnR comments--and other things

Mick Jagger Disses Us Weekly

"It wasn't so easy for legendarily wry Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger to praise Jann Wenner on Monday night. Jagger was invested with the job of inducting Wenner into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — an organization Wenner founded 19 years ago, by the way.

Jagger came to praise Wenner, not bury him. But in highlighting the publisher's achievements in the early days of Rolling Stone magazine, Jagger wound up using the current, scrappy and tabloidy ways of Wenner's other magazine, Us Weekly, for contrast and comparison.

He said, "A bad review in Rolling Stone could ruin sales, but a scandalous story in Us could ruin your life." Then, with a Jagger-esque twinkle in his eye, the 60-year-old bad boy singer added, "Rolling Stone is a beacon on a newsstand that contains The Star, the National Enquirer and," he paused for effect, "Us Weekly."

Ouch!

Jagger also recalled Wenner's attempt to interview him recently for a long piece in Rolling Stone, as the publisher had invented "the very long interview" many decades ago. During the process, Wenner declared, "I feel like a cub reporter!"

Jagger replied, "A cub reporter with a G4 Gulfstream waiting for you!" [Re-ouch!]

Now, not to minimize the incredible impact and influence of Rolling Stone in its early days, Jagger — who wore black track shoes, jeans, an open collar Oxford shirt and a blazer to this black tie event — recalled what news coverage of the pop world was like before Rolling Stone began publication in 1967.

"There were magazines called 16 and Tiger Beat," he said. "They would ask you if you liked blondes or brunettes, what kind of soda you liked. Do you remember, Keith?" he said in aside from the podium to bandmate Keith Richards. "They posed you with sheepdogs in airports. Then Rolling Stone came along and innocent triviality was swept aside. They wanted to know your opinions of Vietnam, the Beatles and your sexual preference."

Jagger is a phenomenon, certainly. At age 60 he remains handsome and lithe, with deep indentations in his face where most men his age have jowls. Under stage lights they look as they were carved in stone, and give Jagger an appearance of symmetrical vitality that could not be accomplished by a face-lift. It's also unlikely that he weighs much more than when he sang "Let's Spend the Night Together" on the "Ed Sullivan Show" 35 years ago. I would guess his waist size hasn't changed much, either.

Richards, on the other hand, likes to give off the aura of court jester. Refusing to prepare remarks for the induction of Texas blues group ZZ Top, Richards instead relied on ad libbing. This had mixed results. Surveying the two ZZ Toppers who still sport trademark long beards, Richards quipped, "I hope these guys aren't on the run. Their disguises won't work." Backstage, Richards spoke admiringly of The Dells, even though he didn't speak to them. He did participate in the big jam session at the end of the night, though, playing hot licks through Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen" and Dave Mason's "Feeling Alright" with an all-star band that was masterfully guided by David Letterman's musical director Paul Shaffer."

Monkey Woman Braids and Beards, Genius and Jam Sessions
By COREY KILGANNON

Published: March 17, 2004

KEITH RICHARDS clanged by, wearing fishing lure-like medallions in his hair, shored up with the help of a colorful headband. We could see why his wife, PATTI HANSEN, confided to us at a party recently that she takes no responsibility for his outfits.

Asked why he was chosen to induct ZZ TOP, Mr. Richards said that the band's guitarist, BILLY GIBBONS, "has given me some really great guitars to use, and this is a way of paying him back."

We asked ZZ Top's drummer, FRANK BEARD, why he does not wear a long beard like his bandmates.

"I always thought I was too good-looking and young to cover this face up with a beard," he said. "Now, at least I'm still too good-looking." Then his bandmate DUSTY HILL, with his long beard and black bandana and wraparound shades, said: "I'm good-looking too, but you'll have to take my word for it." We asked DAVE MATTHEWS, who inducted Traffic, if like STEVE WINWOOD, he played several instruments.

"Oh yeah, I play 15 instruments," he said. "However, they're all guitars."
