Topic: Are songs timeless? Return to archive Page: 1 2
22nd February 2007 05:46 PM
Jim Colyer Writers like to think their songs are timeless, but is there such a thing? I went to Neil Sedaka's site. "Laughter In The Rain" was referred to as timeless. The song reminds me of driving through Chicago in November, 1974, when Neil broke out after a decade of the British dominating radio. Nothing timeless about that! Positive thinking is the theme which, in a human context, can be called timeless. Shakespearean themes are thought of as timeless although his language is obviously not. Dinosaurs ruled 160 million years and passed away. The sun will expend its energy, and the universe will die. Can 3 minute songs be eternal? The ones most closely approaching timelessness are Christmas songs because Christmas returns annually and because no new, good Christmas songs have appeared in the last 50 years. "Silent Night" and "White Christmas" become relevant each December.

Joey " Writers like to think their songs are timeless, but is there such a thing? "

YES !!!!!!

Any song by the Rolling Stones , The Beatles and The Who is timeless and full of cultural resonance .

I am reminded of what someone once said of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of Steely Dan : " these guys are not after perfection , what they are trying to do is write /compose songs that people will want to listen to over and over again "

I Thank You for your time today

Same thoughts occur to me when I hear Brass Monkey

(chorus) Brass Monkey - that funky Monkey
Brass Monkey - junkie
That funky Monkey

Got this dance that's more than real
Drink Brass Monkey - here's how you feel
Put your left leg down - your right leg up
Tilt your head back - let's finish the cup
M.C.A. with the bottle - D. rocks the can
Adrock gets nice with Charlie Chan
We're offered Moet - we don't mind Chivas
Wherever we go with bring the Monkey with us
Adrock drinks three - Mike D. is D.
Double R. foots the bill most definitely
I drink Brass Monkey and I rock well
I got a Castle in Brooklyn - that's where I dwell

(repeat chorus)

Cause I drink it anytime - and anyplace
When it's time to get ill - I pour it on my face
Monkey tastes Def when you pour it on ice
Come on y'all it's time to get nice
Coolin' by the lockers getting kind of funky
Me and the crew - we're drinking Brass Monkey
This girl walked by - she gave me the eye
I reached in the locker - grabbed the Spanish Fly
I put it with the Monkey - mixed it in the cup
Went over to the girl, "Yo baby, what's up?"
I offered her a sip - the girl she gave me lip
It did begin the stuff wore in and now she's on my tip

(repeat chorus)

Step up to the bar - put the girl down
She takes a big gulp and slaps it around
Take a sip - you can do it - you get right to it
We had a case in the place and we went right through it
You got a dry Martini - thinking you're cool
I'll take your place at the bar - I smack you off your stool
I'll down a '40 dog" in a single gulp
And if you got beef you'll get beat to a pulp
Monkey and parties and reelin' and rockin'
Def, def - girls, girls - all y'all jockin'
The song and dance keeping you in a trance
If you don't buy my record I got my advance
I drink it - I think it - I see it - I be it
I love Brass Monkey but I won't give D. it
We got the bottle - you got the cup
Come on everybody let's get ffffff

(repeat chorus)

Riffhard Maybe this question should be asked to Mozart,Beetoven,Bach,Chopin,Vivaldi,Brahms, etc.

Of course songs can be timeless! The thing is that if the song smacks of a particular musical fad or era then it has trouble remaining timeless. I mean a tune like Zager and Evan's-In The Year 2525 is certainly not timeless! Nor is Scott McKenzie's-If Your Going To San Fransico. They both are songs which strongly reflect the era in which they were written.

Now a song like Satifaction? Absolutly timeless, and it's 42 years old!! It would be an instant smash hit if it were released today. Same goes for many Stones' tunes. Brown Sugar,Jumping Jack Flash,Sympathy,Honky Tonk Woman...the list goes on and on and on.

pdog Fiji, you ever drink Brass Monkey?
It's like an old Screwdiver made with Sunny Delight instead of OJ, and then left to sit in a fridge for a month in the glass you made it in...
Yes! Back in the day, we did a scientific study, and did a Pepsi challenge.

I wholeheartedly dissagree with you on that point oldkr. Songs like Satisfaction,JJF,HTW,SFTD,UMT and whole slew of others are most certainly timeless. There is nothing that keeps them from being timeless. They are just great rock and roll tracks, and that alone makes them so. When you look at a song like Play With Fire or She Smiled Sweetly then you are right. Those particular cuts are so tied to the early 60's that they will always envoke that particular era,but not so the tunes I listed prior. I mean if Gimme Shelter or Brown Sugar were released today they would still be relevant and they would also be smash hits.

oldkr Are we talking sentiment/theme or style or composition? In terms of both style and composition the stones are hideously dated now, even their new stuff.

Again I must strongly disagree with you on this point my friend. The fact that bands like Black Stone Cherry,Jet,The Hives,The Strokes,The Vines, and yes, even The White Stripes, and most famously The Black Crowes cop many of their riffs and chord structures and chord progression in very Stonesian style only underscores the Stones' timelessness. Not to mention the fact that 42 years on we are still hearing Satisfaction on the Mainstream Rock radio format as well as Classic Rock only further underscores this point. Then,of course, there is the fact that 45 years later and the band can still sell out stadiums the world over speaks to their timelessness.

The Stones helped write the blueprint for what a rock and roll band is all about. Two guitars, one bass,a drum kit,and an overblown ego with a mic. Four decades later the blueprint is still being followed to the letter. The bands that ignore this blueprint often find their carreers ending as soon as the whims of a fickle trend following fanbase change their musical preferences. The Stones have always managed to keep new generations of fans coming back for more. That can not be said of bands that are locked in their own particular era. Think about the 1980's for example. Where are The Eurythmics? The Thompson Twins? Duran Duran? The Stray Cats? Men At Work? Tears For Fears? They were all bands that were cemented in a particular time. They were not timeless, and they have been left by the ever changing musical tastes of the public. The Stones have always managed to change with the times, and thus they remain timeless.

The Stones are the very definition of timelessness. They prove it every time they launch annother world tour. Plus when was the last time you heard Satisfaction on the radio? Now compare that to the last time you heard Come On Eileen!
