speedfreakjive Well, this may go to show that the UK's awareness of the Stones' music is on the wane. How can ANY top 100 list not include Exile or Sticky Fingers in the top 10?

Radiohead #1 & #2, fuck off out!

But then Q is a pile of wank these days.

Do you seriously think Exile or Sticky Fingers would make any Untied States top ten list?

I actually think the list is pretty predictable. All the albums in the top ten are great. I just wouldn't have them in that order.

For me personally, the biggest shock with recent polls is that The Beatles seem to be slipping. With every magazine poll, they slip further and further down the list. I think Revolver will always be near the top or there abouts, but there was a time when they'd have four or five records in the top ten.

January 18th, 2006 07:26 AM
speedfreakjive Yes, your right, but its funny how they're so popular in terms of touring, and are regarded as one of the greats, but are never in the top 10 albums.

The top 10 are classics apart from OK Computer and Kid A IMHO.

Do you own Jeff Buckley, Grace; if so, whats it like, i'm considering buying it.

No I don't. It's one of those albums, which always makes the top twenty, yet I have absolutely no desire to purchase. I'm not sure if I've heard anything off that particular record, but what I've heard from him, I don't like.
January 18th, 2006 10:38 AM
Ihavelotsajam The Q list always has the exact same albums on it. It's also pretty much the only list where Screamadelica always shows up very prominently high. Heh. YOu can't have a Q best album list without Screamadelica, and you can't have any other Top ALbums list where Screamadelica even shows up...

Jeff Buckley has what some would call "heavenly" or "angelic" or "transcendental" vocals, but he's also a heavenly cure for insomnia.

I'm a little suprised that Kid A is in the top ten, but The Bends and Ok Computer are a regular fixture in these lists and quite often, the latter makes the number 1 spot. What did you expect? Exile On Main Street? Now then you'd be laughing!

No matter where in the world this poll was conducted, I think the results would be fairly simular everywhere.
January 18th, 2006 06:50 PM
gypsymofo60 What is it with the British rock press/historians/etc?
What's/what was so wonderfull about OK Computer and The Bends?

They do to me what Pink Floyd do to me
They quite literally anethaetise mezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I don't expect the Stones close to the Top 10, the list is done by mostly kids and we all know that they're not very popular among kids in Britain. No Beggars Banquet on the top 100 is a crime too.

I don't disagree with you, but I don't particularly think it has anything to do with "kids" making up the bulk of the voters. If all the voters were 30+ years in age, I still think Exile would be outside the top twenty and I still think Radiohead would be number 1. It's been this way for a while. I actually agree with about half of the top ten. Kid A and the U2 album being two I don't particularly think warrant been there or even in the top 100 at all! Nevermind, Revolver, The Stone Roses and Defiantly Maybe? Hell yeah! They deserve to be up there in my opinion.

texile amazing!
i love radiohead and nirvana, but to place them above not only exile, but dylan and the beatles?
those artists changed the concept of what rock and roll was....defined it....and they have stood the test of time.
radiohead and nirvana shhok up a complacent and jaded rock audience, including me - but to me, they just don't have that timeless quality....
or we don't know yet but something tells me, 5 years from now - the list is going to be very different..
and i love jeff buckley but it is not on the epic scale of exile or blood on the tracks...
soldatti is correct, i think it is the youth factor ...
this is a generation who came of age when the stones were just a bunch of old farts.
it's a disposable list...

I strongly agree with that. When you're a youngster, where is the appeal in a bunch of old men your parents liked?

However, I still don't think the list would've been much different if the average voter age had been higher. I'd imagine that the age of Q readers (I'm one myself and I'm 22) would be from late teens upwards.

It's all to do with what’s FASHIONABLE at the particular moment. It's like what I was saying earlier in this thread about the Beatles. They're slipping down these lists a little now because a lot of today’s new bands don't cite them as a direct influence, where as 10 years ago, the then current bands, like Oasis for example, were raving about them and as a result, you'd get 4 or 5 Beatles records in the top 10.

I don't think I agree with you on Nirvana; Nevermind and In Utero WILL stand the test of time, there was nothing like it before, or since; his ear for melody put him into the "stratosphere", the melodies are mind bogglingly amazing IMO.

Well Nevermind is just considered to be “one of those albums” now. A music essay or list isn't truely complete without a mention of this record. I think it's great, but I'd say In Utero is my favourite by some distance. I'm not saying that to be different, but Serve The Servants and Dumb are my two favourite tracks of theirs.

likwise, i like Heart Shaped Box, which is a more obvious song, but perhaps their best IMO.
January 18th, 2006 08:20 PM
texile i don't disagree about nirvana - in utero still blows me away......
but so did the pistols and they have dropped off -
like honky man said, it's all about what's in the loop of mass trendiness.
nirvana defined a time - in that sense, yes they are TIMELESS......but its a brief moment in time that has passed...
dylan, the stones define something larger in a cultural sense.....like johnny cash, they transcended those thier time.
January 18th, 2006 08:25 PM
speedfreakjive At a glimpse, I'd say Blood On The Tracks and Whats Goin' On should be in the Top 10.
January 18th, 2006 08:37 PM
texile exactly, what about what's going on or any of stevie's early 70s albums?
to me, the list is timely - that's all.
January 18th, 2006 08:50 PM
speedfreakjive yeah, your right, REM should NOT be in the top 20 IMO
