One of Dylan's most famous quotes in the 60's regarding the Stones was:
"I could have written Satisfaction but the Stones could never have written Mr. Tamborine Man."
But the fact is, Dylan didn't write Satisfaction. And I'm not sure he could have ever written such a guitar riff. |

and the stones could never have written Mt. T Man, either - so what's your point? |
|
Pattie |
right, what's your point?

That would be nice. I would prefer that only those who want to discuss music, the Stones, and Dylan respond to this thread. |

Stones wrote Satisfaction -- if Dylan could have, it doesn't matter cuz it wouldn't have been right.
Stones could not have written Mr. T man because it is not the Stones.
And if anyone should not be responded to, it is SAL!

This is why, despite Martha sending me a great BD boot, I despise him...he is a disgrace to my religion... |

Maybe I don't know Dylan enough to answer, but I don't think there's much to read into in this statement. He probably said it in a moment when he was pissed off with Mick - or the world in general. It just doesn't make much sense, and I suppose his only point was to say "I'm better than you". |

Pattie |
mmmm maybe he's a buddhist now |

This is the goofiest thread ever. |

Youve taken the quote out of context. It was actually a direct quote he made to Mick in 1965. The impression I've always got was that Bob was implying he could have written lyrics a la "Satisfaction" (not "Satisfaction" per se) but that Mick couldnt have composed something as dreamy as "Mr Tambourine Man". In 1965, he was almost certainly right. The Stones compositions at that time were primarily geared towards making pop records.
Whether you reckon he was making better records at that time (or any time) than the Stones were isnt the point,I think, but they were certainly different. |

What about this good ol' one from Mick Re: Dylan Re: his 1992 Grammy Performance?
What would you get Bob Dylan for his birthday?
"Judging from his performance at the Grammies I'd get him a new hat and a good song."
Rock Stars, being bitches to one another! If they're not in the same band, it's hilarious!
Much better than physically beating each other up!
Bob Dylan could not have written Stray Cat Blues. |

gazza i defer to your greater knowledge but i read a remark of mick's once concerning this comment and he said bob said it to keith and not him
the real question in my mind, however, is could keith have written "visions of johanna"??.. i say yes, however, bob wrote that in his twenties and i don't think keith would have been up to until his early 30's
"inside the museums, infinty goes up on trial
voices echo this what salvation must be like after awhile..." |

You're stoned!
Keith could NEVER have written Visions of Johanna.
But he could have written "All Along the Watchtower".
Strange but true!

Sleazy Hugh |
Do you think that Mick Jagger could have written "That Chick's Too Young To Fry", Lambchop? |
|
Nasty Habits |
Yeah, he could've
He called it "Brownsville Girl"
Actually, he called it "New Danville Girl", but then HE got stoned and changed it (fucked it up, too).
Had to hire Sam Shephard to help him, though.
Could Mick Jagger have written "New Pony"?

having given your question some serious thought i am of the view that, yes, he could have |

Yeah, I think he coulda pulled that one off, too. Maybe they should cover it.
Could Keef have written "High Water (For Charlie Patton)"
Or, more importantly, can Keef write a song that good TODAY?
And can Mick sing it?
Please? |

Satisfaction or Mr Tamborine Man.
The real question is 'which is the better song?'
As a Stones fan, I know what my answer is......... |
