the good |
I think most Stones fans would agree these are their best country songs. Which one do you prefer? I have gone back and forth so many times about which one I like better that its tough to say. Since my students have their finals this week and I have way too much time on my hands, I have tried to break the tie by breaking it down in the following manner:
Lyrics: Dead Flowers tells a story, and has some of those poingant, human moments that bring out the best in Mick as a lyricist. Like feeling embarrassed when your seen with certain people, finding someone's character flaws to be charming, and liking someone even if they may not like you. By contrast, Sweet Virginia doesn't really tell a story, and is more of a stream of consciousness kind of song. I prefer themes to streams of consciousness, so score one for Dead Flowers.
Vocals: I think Mick's singing on Dead Flowers is dead on brilliant. I mean, the guy sounds like a country singer. He doesn't pull it of quite as well on Sweet Virginia (at least the exile version), so I say place another in the column for DF.
Guitar Work: This is a close call, because I think the playing is great on both tracks. But the solo for DF is so inspiring, and every twang is so perfect, that I have to give it again to DF. Honorable mention, however, goes to the intro to Sweet Virginia.
Finally, Sweet Virginia has a beautiful harmonica part, and a great sax solo. I love the harmonica and the sax, so I'll throw a point in for Sweet Virginia here.
So, final score, Dead Flowers 3, Sweet Virginia 1. Dead Flowers takes it. At least this month...
What do you guys say?

A dead heat. For the brilliance of Keith's backing vocals, i say Dead Flowers, and the solo. But, i have to say i disagree about themes vs streams, cos Sweet Virginia is a masterpiece, the fact that the two verses come straight after eachother before the chorus is pure genius, i dont recall many songs that do the same, also brilliant lyrics about "weight, behind you're eyeballs"
BTW funnily enuff, the backing vocals by keith on SV on Ladies & Gents is amazing |

Nice analysis.
I agree with your categories and descriptions.
Dead Flowers wins. Sweet Virginia loses a tenth of a point for "got to scrape the shit right off your shoes" which always struck me as insincere (ala Faraway Eyes), whereas Dead Flowers is absolute perfection, one of their best songs. |

disappointed at the way Bono carried himself/save the world crap
Disappointed that Edge plays computer and not guitar anymore
Disappointed that the stupid/ridiculous adlibbing of lyrics during every song had to continue
Disappointed that other than Bono (whom I hate as a performer), no one else in the band even showed that they had a pulse.
Disappointed in ridiculous stage backdrop that kept changing
Disappointed that I humiliated myself and all true stones fans by even attending. Thankfully, my wife agreed that we should get the hell out of there before it got any worse.
Sadly, many of the fans were there because it was the "in place" to be and most acted like mindless sheep just following michael Cohl's orders.
I felt like vomiting for nearly 19 hours after the show!

Jeez, you've hit the head of the nAil VP.
I saw them in Manchester, England in June, and it was crap. Like you say, Bono's ad libbing are both excessive and irritating at the same time!!
Quite an underwhelming gig too.
also, i hate the fact that we could'nt get anywhere near them because of the exclusive "pay extra" enclosure, Cohl = wanker

We (true stones fans) will sadly have to see this awful band overtake all of our tour earnings records....our only hope is a horrible arguement between Edge and Bonehead, causing the band to break up. Sadly, Cohl will not allow this, our only hope is Young Jake Cohl continuing to fill the arenas that the stones play! I shall now go to sleep for the night...good night my friends.
....fade to baby joshy singing his favorite Babs Streisand showtunes........

Trainspotting - great film. Begbie is a brilliantly amusing character, Robert Carlyle did a superb job.
Renton on attempting to get off smack:
"Relinquishing junk. Stage one, preparation. For this you will need one room which you will not leave. Soothing music. Tomato soup, ten tins of. Mushroom soup, eight tins of, for consumption cold. Ice cream, vanilla, one large tub of. Magnesia, milk of, one bottle. Paracetamol, mouthwash, vitamins. Mineral water, Lucozade, pornography. One mattress. One bucket for urine, one for feces and one for vomitus. One television and one bottle of Valium. Which I've already procured from my mother. Who is, in her own domestic and socially acceptable way also a drug addict. And now I'm ready. All I need is one final hit to soothe the pain while the Valium takes effect."
and this gem, between Renton and Sick Boy:
"Sick Boy: It's certainly a phenomenon in all walks of life.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: What do you mean?
Sick Boy: Well, at one time, you've got it, and then you lose it, and it's gone forever. All walks of life: George Best, for example. Had it, lost it. Or David Bowie, or Lou Reed...
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Some of his solo stuff's not bad.
Sick Boy: No, it's not bad, but it's not great either. And in your heart you kind of know that although it sounds all right, it's actually just shite.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: So who else?
Sick Boy: Charlie Nicholas, David Niven, Malcolm McLaren, Elvis Presley...
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: OK, OK, so what's the point you're trying to make?
Sick Boy: All I'm trying to do is help you understand that The Name of The Rose is merely a blip on an otherwise uninterrupted downward trajectory.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: What about The Untouchables?
Sick Boy: I don't rate that at all.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Despite the Academy Award?
Sick Boy: That means fuck all. The sympathy vote.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Right. So we all get old and then we can't hack it anymore. Is that it?
Sick Boy: Yeah.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: That's your theory?
Sick Boy: Yeah. Beautifully fucking illustrated. "
Excellent movie and part of my growing up... |
