25 years ago my life was forever changed by John's murder. I cannot forget.
May you find peace in your daily life and offer it to others as you go on.
love,
Martha

It's 25 years.
We've all mourned.
It's time to move on.
Or as someone once sang, "You Better Move On"
Celebrate the music he was
responsible for creating.
Go watch Rock & Roll Circus tonight
Regale in "The Dirty Mac"
Upward & Onward!

I really don't know anyone who thinks John was a saint. His flaws were obvious, mainly because he talked about them all the time.
Today is going badly for me...it's hitting me much harder than it does most years. I think it's the fact that so many people don't know why he mattered. I can't talk out loud about it because my voice starts breaking.
It reminds me of the last time I was in Arlington Cemetery standing at the Eternal Flame, and right beside the "Silence Please" sign was a bunch of teenagers laughing and talking loud, and one of them said "ROBERT FRANCIS Kennedy? Who was HE?"
Unfortunately, although I doggedly maintain as much senseless idealism as possible, the lasting legacy of John Lennon is that his death proved that anything can happen, and the more horrible and senseless it is, the more likely it is to happen. His life message was, perhaps, that if you change the way people think, the world will change...and his murder and the decades that have followed it proved that you can't change the way people think.
A big "screw you" to everyone who thought today was a good day to badmouth John Lennon. I'm not a christian but I usually keep my mouth shut about it on Christmas and Easter.

yeah..a BIG screw you!!!
i don't know anybody who ever thought of john as a saint. he'd strike us all down if we ever suggested such a thing.
but to take this day and use it as an opportunity to spew venom about the man is in incredibly bad taste. |

Yeh, but what do you expect? Some on this board find it perfectly acceptable to be bashing and ripping a man who was murdered 25 years to the date. Conversely, had it been Keith and they found people mocking him, his band, his legacy, they'd go nuts. Some people here just can't resist the act of bashing the Beatles even when it's in a period of mourning. How childish is it to bash them constantly. Some of the posts spew venom not in a humorous fashion. Man, even the Eagles don't get it as rough and they really did suck. Tasteless, is all I gotta say about it. |

Rolling Beatle |
25 years ago On December 8th 1980 at almost 11 PM, musician and former Beatle John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono were walking to his apartment at the Dakota building in NYC. As he drew nearer to the building, Lennon heard a voice cry out "Mr Lennon?"?
Lennon began to turn around, and four bullets penetrated his back. He stumbled on the steps. He was rushed to the hospital and was dead on arrival. It is very ironic and disturbing to think that a person who wrote such lyrics as "give peace a chance", "war is over", "All you need is love" and "imagine all the people living life in peace" could die in such a tragic and barbaric way as assassination.
John Lennon truly cared for the earth and its people, and tried to save the world every day he lived his tragically short life. I please ask you, to respect his memory by trying to live in this way, for at least a little while. Think about people, and help every chance you can. As a closing statement, I'll give one of John Lennon's most well-known lyrics:
You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one.
Thank you.
And that is the announcement that I made this morning at school in honour of my main and top hero. |

Dude, I think John was a much better singer than Paul. Like Albert Goldman said, Paul sounded like he needed a decongestant when he was singing.

Child of the Moon |
I probably post this every year, but what the hell. Here's another go-round.
John Lennon's importance in my life CANNOT be overestimated. It CANNOT. I essentially owe who I am to that guy. When I discovered the Beatles in the sixth grade, I was walking down a life-road that probably would have spelled my demise by now. Those were not good times. But in listening to Lennon's music and his lyrics and his words on life... I dunno. It said a whole hell of a lot to me, and it got me back up and on my feet.
I used to cry sometimes knowing that Lennon wasn't here any more. Mind you, I wasn't even born by the time he was gone, and here I was, mourning him like'd he'd died an hour before. The man was an absolute inspiration to me. I know many here have said that no one claims Lennon was a saint, and that may be true in the most literal sense. He did some shitty things, I fully admit. But in a larger sense, he was and is a saint to me. I take inspiration as it comes, and John Lennon has continued to inspire and invigorate me ten years after I discovered him.
And don't even get me started on his impact on my musical life. He was one of the biggest reasons I ever started writing lyrics and poetry. His guitar playing was beautifully minimal - his solo part in the R&R Circus Yer Blues damn near steals the show from Clapton - and his melodical sense was extraordinary. The guy could write a FUCKING GOOD SONG. I'm still discovering new things in songs as simple as I'll Be Back or Ticket to Ride.
I mourned heavily for a month after George Harrison passed away. But here I am, ten years after finding out who John Lennon was and just what he meant to the world, and I am still shedding fuckin' tears over it. I can't even begin to imagine how I would have felt had I been part of his generation, or part of the generation that grew up with Beatlemania.
Johnny Cash may be Jesus. Keith Richards may be God. But Lennon? He's fucking JOHN LENNON, for pete's sake. You don't get any higher up than that. |

I find these kinds of comments to be amazing, even if they are not meant to be taken literally. But to each his own. |

Lennon , like Elvis, is glorified more in death than in life. He was the only Beatle with some talent, but let us never compare him to Jagger/Richards who were light years ahead of the Beatles in terms of writing, playing, and performing live. Again, it was tragic that Lennon was killed, but as pointed out above, lets not make a saint out of the guy. He was no better or worse than any other self-indulgent pop star. |
