Bono, did you get shut out? There's hope!
Senator to introduce bill to hamper ticket scalpers
By JoANNE YOUNG / Lincoln Journal Star
Tuesday, Oct 23, 2007 - 11:55:23 pm CDT
Frustrated that you weren’t able to get tickets to Hannah Montana or the Rolling Stones or Paul McCartney at the Qwest Center in Omaha?
A lot of people have been, apparently.
Omaha Sen. Gwen Howard said she has heard from a lot of frustrated constituents about the inability of average concert goers to get affordable tickets, especially for Tuesday night’s Hannah Montana show. She believes she has a simple solution, which she announced Tuesday morning. She proposed introducing a bill that will make concert tickets available only at the box office the first 48 hours after they go on sale. And each person would be allowed only six tickets.
The law would apply mostly to events at the Omaha arena.
It’s a common practice of ticket brokers and others to use computer technology to flood the lines as soon as tickets go on sale online to buy up blocks of tickets for resale at higher prices. The scalpers resell the tickets on eBay and other ticket sites for a tidy profit.
Tickets for Tuesday night’s Hannah Montana concert in Omaha, the third stop in the tour, went on sale Aug. 18 and sold out in under an hour. The tickets were priced at between $26-$56.
On Tuesday, the online Ticket Liquidator had tickets for sale for between $94 (in the upper sections) and $1,530 (second row, main floor). Tickets were available through ticketsnow.com for between $134 and $2,140.
Howard’s solution would allow online and telephone sales only after 48 hours.
But Roger Dixon, president and CEO of Qwest Center Omaha, said what Howard is proposing will not stop scalpers. They’ll just put people in line to grab up tickets for resale, he said.
Her proposal could cause real problems for venues like the Qwest Center, he said.
“We’re people of convenience now,” he said. “If we can’t get what we want quickly, we will move on.”
Government agencies and venues don’t make the rules for artists, he said. “(The artists) dictate that.”
Artists negotiate the amount of rent and tell the arena what the ticket price will be and the allotment each person can buy. For Hannah Montana, the allotment was four per person.
If Nebraska is going to try to tell artists how things will work, they may choose not to play in Omaha or anywhere else in the state, Dixon said.
The logistics for in-person only purchase of tickets would also be a nightmare, he said, with long lines of fans and scalpers similar to the 1980s.
Concert tickets are a supply and demand situation, Dixon said. And sometimes, someone’s not going to get a ticket.
Howard said she can remember standing in line for tickets to the John Denver concert at Civic Auditorium years ago with a bunch of other people.
“That’s just what you did,” she said. “Now it’s very unfair.”
Howard is willing to work with the people involved, including the Qwest Center and the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority.
“We have to start the ball rolling,” she said.
The Nebraska Republican Party criticized Howard for the potential bill that would create more government interference into people’s lives and businesses.
“State Senator Gwen Howard should not waste the public’s time and resources on such self-serving grandstanding,” party officials said in a news release. “The Nebraska Legislature has much more important items on which to focus its attention.”
Howard said she has worked in the Legislature at ways to reduce government interference.
The party also brought up an incident in which Howard talked to a lobbyist for the Qwest Center during this year’s session about getting tickets for a sold-out Billy Joel concert.
“That situation is really nothing to compare with this,” Howard said.
In March, she merely had a conversation with the lobbyist in a hallway. And she purchased the tickets, they were not freebies, she said.

Jeez, if you think tickets are too expensive now, too difficult to get or the sales are incompetently handled - wait until the government steps in to "save us." |
