I love how Mathjiz insults our "Pressident's" (sic) way of speaking yet he can't spell the word.
I actually liked all Dutch people I met up until Mathjiz. And Chirac's a bigger asshole than Clinton.

I just read that thread over in IORR. What a pit of vipers. The same Western Euros who couldn't take action in Bosnia yet begged US to "Do something, do anything!" are now accusing the USA of trying to take over the world. I got news for ya, Mathjiz: you can have it. Let's see how you do. You did great stuff in Indonesia. Belgium was so wonderful in the Congo. You creeps have a lot to answer for so maybe that is why it's easier to take petty shots at the USA on its day of mourning. You are horrible people. BTW if you punch me in the eye, you're not jsut going to get punched back in the eye. Gabeesh?

Doesn't this new DVD smells a bit? I don't have any hard proof or evidence, it's just my own opinion, but I sense something isn't quite right. Yes Mathijs, and yesterday I saw you walking over the water, right?

OK... 'nuff's nuff. Mathjis raised a point about the DVD, now we're stoning him. People can have different opinions. Mind you, I disagree strongly with them, but telling people to 'fuck off' or calling them names or quoting sources inaccurately is sure a great way to get them to listen to your argument.
That being said...
I met a woman from Tanzania last night, and we got to talking foreign policy. Tanzania's one of the largest republics in the world, and Christians and Muslims both call it home. When I asked her what she thought of American policies, she told me "You have to understand, so many people are ignorant of what America does for the world. Do they make mistakes? Yes. Have they made bad decisions? Yes. But for every bad decision they make that is in the newspapers, fifteen good decisions are made. The terrorists don't understand this - they try and get the United States out of countries like Tanzania [the embassy bombing] but they don't realize all the good the people of America do in the world. They are building a medical school, they are helping the poor on the streets of Dar Es Salaam, and for that I always say 'God Bless America' because even with their many mistakes they have brought so much good into the world."
So that's all I'm gonna say on that subject. You can dislike certain policies that America comes up with, sure. I'm not fond of a few of them. But never take for granted what the US has done.

Just yesterday I spoke to a recordcompany rep through a friend of mine who owns a CD store and he told me the following:
It's NOT a hoax but it WON'T make the scheduled deadline, also the price is officially T.B.A.
They hope to have it in stores WORLDWIDE by early december, just in time for Christmas shopping, but that could change there's no firm date as DVD is in (early?) stages of production. Though there is NO tracklisting or something slightly close to that available yet. Everything has to be confirmed. The SUGGESTED bonustracks are nowehere confirmed. The DVD is currently in production but nowehere near a finished product. As long as there is NO catalogue number, which teher isn't, there isn't a release in 1-2 months and nobody can offer it since they cannot (pre-) order it.
So guys, let's quit this sillyness and let's just wait and see 'till something is officially confirmed! |

tSYX, I agree with you wholeheartedly.
And what you say, about a lot of people don't realizing what good the USA or American citizens and organizations do or have done in the world, is very true. For instance, it's unfair to point out only military adventures and forget the aid (in health, education and economy) in the development of Third World or Eastern European countries.
I'm afraid this has a lot to do with the strength, wealth and importance of the USA in today's world economy and global policies. Obviously, a lot of people have more sympathy for the Davids of this world than for Goliaths.
Regardless of the fact that sometimes the necessary action needs force. For instance wiht Bosnia or Kosovo, the USA gave the UN the military force and political drive needed to stop these bloody conflicts. (Sadly, the countries of Western Europe couldn't do the same, the main reason being that "European Union" is basically a marquee for 15 different & independant coutries, not a really united confederation. The politicians here can agree on economic cooperation, up to a point, but coordinated political action is still out of the question. Maybe in 100 years...)
Even if it has little to do with the way the citizens of a country actually live and think, outside opinion will equate them and their country with the government policies or the ways of the bigger companies. So, you will have the crude anti-american caricatures: USA = G.W.Bush + war industry + McDonald + Coca Cola...
Regardless, of course, of the diversity of people's opinions and behaviour. And it's easier to become intolerant and violent towards a caricature or scarecrow than real human beings.
And then, of course, human nature being what it is, it's often the less knowledgeable or respectful people who talk the louder, and therefore gather more attention. That doesn't help building better relationships with other countries.
On a lighter note

Monkey Woman, I'd probably have no problem with those who said that the USA was too big for its britches at times. My country has made mistakes & will continue to make them into the future. Just like many other countries. However, when one has a burning US flag on one's website & then says that the USA "deserved" it, then that's over the line. Frankly, it's impossible for me to not say "Fuck off!" at that time. But this is certainly a dead horse & I'm willing to let it drop. If Mathis does return, perhaps he'll finally answer my question to him taht's been posed twice. |
|
Doxa |
Glencar, why you KEEP ON charging Mathijs for a crime that he hasn't committed? I've seen that famous burning flag you are talking about and it wasn't in his site.
It is not fair. You can kill him for his political opinions but with that particular charge you are haunting the wrong person.
Frankly, I think you should apologize him.

Yes, it seems to me that our positions are not very far. Note that I was discussing where the anti-American perceptions are coming from, *not* endorsing them, of course. I find the mindless and hateful anti-American stances as dangerous as branding all French traitors, all Germans Nazis or saying that all Holland has to offer is whores.
As for Mathijs, I'll say only this: I've seen burning American flags and harsh condemnations of all that is American that originate from American themselves. I strongly think it's their right as citizens to criticize their country. Even then, I agree that dismissing the 9/11 tragedy without sympathy is disturbing to the extreme.
But, and I feel it's an important point, someone who's not living in the country they criticize or condemn should be more careful, as what they say is much more likely to cause offense.
I like boards like RO precisely because it's a place where very different people from all over the world can get together to talk, have fun and share a common passion. I don't know if I'm right or wrong, but I'll always prefer what unites to what divides.
Sorry for the philosophy The Stones say it better in Sweethearts Together:
"Everybody needs someone to tell their troubles to
To share the pain and laughter in a world beset with fools" |

Wow, what the fuck? Funny how the Stones often seem to bring out "the worst" in us. Let's try talking about the band, not who did what to who and when.
