glencar Pretty boring song but certainly better than Let's Work!
1st September 2007 03:22 PM
time is on my side Absolutely sucks with no redeeming qualties what so ever. Pure crap.

Having said that, regardless of what anyone wants to tell you, Wandering Spirit is still a great album filled with great music.

Angiegirl That crap's unbelievably embarrassing.

Yeah I don't like disco either but it's still better than any other recent disco.

Plus it's Mick.

I appreciate anything he does, even Lets Work.

He is the boss, the king and the greatest IMFO.

This is to Mick Jagger what 'Clambake' was to Elvis. A shocking waste of talent that makes you scream 'why are you doing this?' in frustration.

Seriously, this is instantly forgettable shite and you can't just admit it.

If it was by anyone else, they would have struggled to have found a record label to indulge them enough to release it. I like Mick's solo stuff more than some people do, but this harks back to that slop he was dishing out in the mid 80s, and it even has that horrid barking vocal style from that era as well.

Interesting video in that almost all the clips are from 'Being Mick' (which was 6 years ago) or earlier, but no Stones references in sight that I can see. It's as if he's trying to convince that his Stones career is in some kind of separate universe.

About half way through I was hoping he was going to do something like say "fuck" in it just so it would ensure it doesnt get any airplay and therefore cause any further embarrassment...

steel driving hammer Well Gazza I gotta stick up for him anyhoo.

He's MICK.

If he's looking silly w/ solo shit (and yes this song is shit) I'm going down w/ the ship.

He is STILL THE man you know...

MrPleasant Thanks Soldatti. It's like going back to the eighties!

On the good side, IMHMHO:
1.- Mick's singing is as good as ever (for DISCO);
2.- it's catchy (generic, but catchy: all DISCO is catchy, even the worst shit, like Elton John's Victim Of Love - I don't have that one, I just listened to the available clips at amazonwoman.com);
3.- it's short.

On the bad side:
As good as Mick's singing is, this isn't any better than "Dance" (E Rescue): generic stuff (but harmless); not any less good than the lesser good stuff from Michael Jackson. At least Mick isn't going to intoxicate and rape any small children.

Beware, though: I like "Let's Work".

gotdablouse er...no Dance actually had some good hooks, not to mention good guitar parts, this is totally worthless garbage, heck, I must have played that rythm pattern in my sleep a few times and didn't think enough of it to record it.

I agree with the poster who compares it to Bill Wyman's output, you listen to it once and then forget about it. This is not worthy of a man with this legacy.

Since you mention "Let's Work", I'll say that it looks like a masterpiece compared to "Charmed Life", i.e. it's got some lyrics and a bridge !

I looked at again (its like watching a train wreck), and I think he was hugging Ronald for a second (from behind no less).

Awful song and video, probably the worst thing Mick has ever done. Lets hope this embarrasment is gone in a week or so.

No you don't. Are you some paid sycophant or something? He has enough people around him telling him his shit doesn't stink without needing any more.

Have some self respect. Judge the song on it's own merits, not because it happens to have Mick Jagger's name on it.

What's the need to 'stick up for him' regarding this song if you actually admit to thinking it sucks? That makes no sense!

If it had been by anyone else, would you honestly want to hear it again?

That's true. And it had atmosphere, but it could have been recorded by any decent Disco band (which was my point). But you're right.

On second thought, listening to the vid again: it isn't catchy. It's hookless and supported by beats and falsettos. Well...

gotdablouse Yup, it has to be the most boring thing he's ever released, and he isn't going to get any sympathy with the theme, oh poor Mick, what a tough life, eh ?! Does he say something about "look to the left, mind the hustler" at some point?

I can't be bothered to do it, but it seems to me like he recycled the already pretty hookless guitar part of the song "Goddess in the doorway", which is odd since "Charmed Life" is supposed to be a WS outtake.

I'm a sucker for Mick's solo stuff, but CL really has no redeeming aspects! Why didn't he pull out "Honest Man" instead, a catchy rock song that portrays him in a...better light, not the mindless jet-setter we already saw in "Being Mick", he's far worst than the establishment he trashed in the early days...

This is the real Mick ->

luxury1 oh, I just love that it opens with the shot of him in the "beater" and gray sweatpants, in the prison (I think) from Running Out of Luck (I think, again--I am not too into particulars....). I believe I had to rewind/rewatch the VHS during that segment....

I think Streets of Love was a #1 somewhere. Was it Italy?
1st September 2007 08:22 PM
LadyJane Dreadful comes immediately to mind.

This, from the man who wrote Laugh, I Nearly Died and then buried that song from the ABB Tour.

This MAY hit #128 on the charts.

Embarrassing.

CousinC I loved Dance !
It still had some of that urgent Stones-feel.

You can't compare it with bloodless elevatormusic!

On the other hand it's getting a bit better when you hear it more often and in the right surroundings!
(Elevators . . ?!) LOL

BONOISLOVE Don't hurt me because I like it. (Ok, don't hurt me at this exact moment, but you can hurt me in the bedroom. Wink, wink; arf, arf.)
1st September 2007 08:31 PM
Erik_Snow Yes Dance is one of the 15 best Stones songs of the 80s,

...but Charmed Life might be the crappiest piece of music ever to see the light of day.

I will boycot the new Jagger compilation becuase of this song.
1st September 2007 08:44 PM
Mel Belli What can you say? Mick genuinely likes crappy music.

The thing that bugs me is the juxtaposition of the lyrics and all the "Being Mick" footage: as if to say, Look at me hanging with royalty, rock stars, and fawning press gaggles. Ain't I just grand?

Isn't this when Keith is supposed to step in and call Mick "Brenda"?
1st September 2007 09:12 PM
Glimmer Twin After hearing it a few more times, I got the same opinion. It's alright but nothing special. It never goes anywhere is its problem. Always the same riff, endlessly repeated. But the riff ain't bad. And I don't think the vocals are bad either. He sounds convincing that it comes out of his life. I don't care for the ending though. Average stuff, but I think the term "crap" is too harsh.

#128 in the U.S charts would be a smash hit, none of the ABB singles got any close to that.
The song could be a moderate hit on the dance charts as Rain Fall Down, but I can't see the radio playing this stuff, it's not rock, it's not country, it's not R&B, not even pop.
1st September 2007 10:21 PM
IanBillen My god,

As I said before A Bigger Bang was not a Mick Jagger solo record as many thought it was in the end.

This is proof. This song is stupid and I actually have to say it is a peice of crap.

I just tried listening to it for the second time and I cannot even make it all the way through it is such a stupid terd.

and the video's theme is stupid, It is like a "being Mick" video...

OK OK Mick, we get it. You are a worldly superstar-legend.

We already know that Mick...
