Throwaway I'll be surprised if this stays on page one for more than an hour, but here goes. The bass playing is groovy. The verses at first leave you wanting more, then the end of each verse has an amazing climax, with Mick singing so passionately that I'm getting worried about his gay affair (supposedly the subject of the song). And I was thinking that if they busted this one out live (maybe a little shorter, tighter version to keep the audiences attention)...and more than 1% of the audience had heard of the song..it would make for an awesome singalong.
15th September 2006 11:44 PM
CraigP The bass is quite good as always with ol' Bill.
I don't like Mick going "feel!" "feel!" in a very gay falsetto voice. Don't get me wrong, I like his falsetto from Tattoo/ER era but it gets tedious.

Lethargy Truly awful song, like most of the songs on Undercover.

SteveMiller Every Stones song is bad

Steamboat Bill, Jr. The song sucks.

lotsajizz the dub remix as the B-side of the extended "Undercover" is pretty cool

The bass is actually by Robbie Shakespeare on that one. Sly and Robbie both play on it - Sly is on percussion, with Charlie on drums

Always liked this song - and the dub version is terrific.
17th September 2006 02:31 PM
lotsajizz there's at least two bass tracks on that song...Shakespeare is definitely one, sounds like Wyman or Keith on the other...

Gazza Your ears are obviously in better condition than mine! Bill is missing on a few songs on that album, so it could be that its Keith or Ronnie on the other bass - or else Robbie again?

here's what the album line-ups are track-by-track according to "The Complete Works", although I guess no list is definitive :

Line-up ‘Undercover’: MJ (voc)/KR (gtr)/RW (gtr)/BW (bass)/CW (dr)/
Chuck Leavell (keyb)/Sly Dunbar (perc)
Line-up ‘She Was Hot’: MJ (voc)/KR (gtr)/RW (gtr)/BW (bass)/CW (dr)/
STU (p)/Chuck Leavell (p)
Line-up ‘Tie You Up’: MJ (voc)/KR (gtr, bvoc)/RW (gtr, bass, bvoc)/CW
(dr)/Chuck Leavell (p)
Line-up ‘Wanna Hold You’: KR (voc, gtr)/RW (gtr, bass, bvoc)/CW (dr)
Line-up ‘Feel On Baby’: MJ (voc, harm)/KR (gtr, voc)/ RW (gtr)/CW (dr)/
Chuck Leavell (keyb)/Robbie Shakespeare (bass)/Sly Dunbar (perc)
Line-up ‘Too Much Blood’: MJ (voc)/KR (gtr)/RW (gtr)/BW (bass)/CW (dr)/
Chuck Leavell (keyb)/Jim Barber (gtr)/The Sugarhill Horn Section
CHOPS (horns)/Sly Dunbar (perc)
Line-up ‘Pretty Beat Up’: MJ (voc, gtr)/KR (bass, bvoc)/RW (gtr, bvoc)/BW
(p)/CW (dr)/STU (org)/David Sanborn (sax)/The Sugarhill Horn
Section CHOPS (horns)
Line-up ‘Too Tough’: MJ (voc, gtr)/KR (gtr)/RW (gtr)/BW (bass)/CW (dr)/
Chuck Leavell (p)
Line-up: ‘All The Way Down’: MJ (voc, gtr)/KR (gtr, bvoc)/ RW (gtr, bvoc)/
BW (bass)/CW (dr)/Chuck Leavell (el p)
Line-up ‘It Must Be Hell’: MJ (voc)/KR (gtr, bvoc)/RW (gtr, bvoc)/BW
(bass)/CW (dr)/Chuck Leavell (p)
Note: Lots of percussion was played on the album by BW, STU, Moustapha
Cisse, Brahms Coundoul, Martin Ditcham and Sly Dunbar.

I thought that was what Keith called (Ronnie's) Pretty Beat Up.
18th September 2006 02:45 AM
Zack You're right, I confused the two. I stand corrected.
18th September 2006 03:01 AM
CraigP Bill Wyman was the best bassist for ANY classic rock band.
Liten to '81 boots if the studio shit doen't get you comming.
18th September 2006 03:17 AM
The Wick I like the song, but it could have been much better. It has that great African stuff on it too. They started not giving a toss around then and it shows. Undercover, I actually like, but if they had given a toss, it would have been fantastic. All the Way Down should be played live- love that track.
18th September 2006 03:17 AM
F505 Boring,lousy,afwul song.

I used to love that

back in the day I probably burned thru an acre of kind while listening to that tune over and over
18th September 2006 07:42 PM
Soldatti I always liked this tune, it sounds great at full volume.
19th September 2006 09:09 AM
lotsajizz Wyman is not even the best bass player in the Stones....
19th September 2006 09:27 AM
Gazza Not to diss Bill, but its certainly interesting that when you look at a lot of the classic basslines in stones history that a lot of them were actually played by Keith or Mick Taylor.

Fingerprint File being a case in point.

very true

Live With Me is the best bass line ever. And its Keith.

I love Wyman btw. The cat was solid.
19th September 2006 03:32 PM
Throwaway IMO Bill shined the most playing live ('78 and '81 are generally seen as his high points), but thats not to say he wasnt great in the studio (see Worried About You). I think songs where Bill is absent are cool because they have a different feel, and KR/Taylor/Ronnie are each great in their own right as is Bill. Sympathy, Fingerprint File as Gazza mentioned, Tie You Up, and Break the Spell are just a few examples of the guitarists' talents on bass.
19th September 2006 03:52 PM
Saint Sway Wyman slept with over 2,000 woman. I say that makes him the most talented Stone.
