OMG The show was BRILLIANT! I was lucky enough to sell a pair of nosebleeds and buy a "good seat" from a dude from Amsterdam! I got into the O2 and was directed to the second row, and it was a fantastic seat! Very happy to be right in front of MICK, I swear he looked right at me and saw me dancing and was dancing right back at me! I was yelling MMMMMMMMMIIIICCCCCCCKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!! and waving to him wildly thru the entire show, and I know he had to have heard me! LOL! The O2 Dome is about the same sizs as MSG, and the acoustics are very good, the place is clean and lots of things to eat and drink available if you have the cash! London prices are expensive, comparable to NY. Beer is sold in plastic bottles or cups so I was covered in beer spills by the guys all around me! But who cares, it was fun, everyone was friendly and the British people are very polite, much more than the NY crowds. No smoking rules in effect, and a big fine if caught, so there were no joints being passed around like in MSG. I heard the police were ready to arrest KEEF if he lit up during the show, and he did, as did RONNIE, but no arrests. I guess those guys are above the law! Rightfully so!
The setlist ROCKED! I was elated to get ROCKS OFF, I GO CRAZY, LET IT BLEED & RESPECTABLE! During ROCKS OFF, there was a blunder regarding the ending, MICK bent down to take a bow signifying the end of the song, but the band played on, and MICK got back up and sang a few more lines but then it ended abrubtly and the ending was goofed up completely, but it was still great, just a little unorganized. MICK sang the same verse twice during a few of the songs, but most of the crowd wouldnt notice the little things like that. Some of the other songs like Tumbling Dice was just a bit messed up here and there with the lyrics. No big deal. It was a great show! RONNIE is really in the groove now, KEEF had his moments of OH HELL YEAH and other moments where he was just standing there not playing, then he would pick it up again and amaze me. CHARLIE is ALWAYS wonderful, he doesnt miss a beat nor break a sweat. He was smiling alot more than usual, and I think he was happy to be back in London. MICK announced this, it took the STONES 40 years to get from RICHMOND to GREENWICH! Those two places are not too far apart but they sure took a long time to get there! MICK also reminded the crowd that it was 2 years to the day since the tour begain in Boston! A bunch of people were hanging out backstage, some kids too, looked like a bunch of family and friends were in the house. It was an AWESOME show, The Stones are in high gear now, and they really looked FANTASTIC! MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!!!! KKKKKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEFFFFF!!!!!
SSSTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha not quite, there was the searches then the metal detector scanning, but the woman said cameras were fine. So then after I'd gone up the escalator people were taking pictures so I thought I'd join in on the fun. Until one bastard of a security guard told me to come with him, after a row with him and other guards, I was told I would have my camera confiscated and if I didn't give it I would be kicked out! Pfft! I explained that I had to leave rihgt after the show and would miss my train if I had to collect my camera(I stayed overnight, just said I had to go right after to make it look better) But they didn't care. And I said that I got past the other security with it, and even the other security were sticking up for me. So when the guard turned his back on me to try and take someone elses camera, I ran for it! Haha Ok I shouldn't have really, but there was no way I was handing my camera over after being told I could have it, and loads of others had cameras. While I was running up the escalator the guard caught up with me at the side on the steps! I was in real trouble, he said he was going to kick me out, and I argued further and then after snatching my bag with tshirt( I dont know why he took it?) and camera off me to look at, he finally gave in and let me have it!
Woopsie...didn't mean to drag on.
But other than those idiot security, it was a perfect night!
Hi Daniel,
You must have been really unlucky with that dickhead security guard. I got one to take a photo of me with KR behind (I hope!). They waved us straight through the turnstiles with no searching. Lots of cameras everwhere.

STONES AVOID SMOKING FINE
22/08/2007 16:50
Rock legends the ROLLING STONES have avoided a fine, despite smoking onstage at a concert in London on Tuesday (21Aug07). Guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood both smoked cigarettes inside the O2 arena, flouting the U.K. law banning smoking inside public buildings. The maximum fine is $5,000 (GBP2,500) - but Greenwich Council has accepted an apology from venue bosses. An O2 Arena spokeswoman says, "A band member appeared to have a cigarette, however it was extinguished almost faster than the message to put it out got to stage. "We are sure it was an oversight and are grateful for their co-operation. "Along with the rest of the country, we take the smoking ban seriously." A Greenwich council spokesperson says, "We have received no complaints from members of the public. We have reminded the O2 of their obligation to enforce the smoking legislation."

Yeah, when I was taking the picture I could hear the security talking to each other about if we were allowed cameras and I knew it wouldn't be good! But like I said the idiot eventually let me have it.
Thats odd, what enterance did you go through?

I shoved my camera (disposable only - doh!)in his hand and asked him to take the shot, but I don't think the flash worked ! Wish I hadn't left my digital spare battery at the hotel !
I'm gonna get the camera developed tomorrow.

Famous rock photographer on yesterdays Rolling Stones Show:
Went to see The Rolling Stones with my mates Wilf Wright and Barry Drinkwater at the O2 Arena. I wasn't really in the mood for rock and roll, which was a good thing as they were as far removed from rock and roll as possible. They were dire - words fail me... Mick Jagger tried hard and worked the stage but the sound was terrible, the lights production were a cross between an MTV video and a Las Vegas revue. There was no camaraderie on stage, it was lifeless. A bit like an old folks fashion show - there seemed to be more costume changes than in a Madonna concert... The best song was James Brown's I'll Go Crazy, they butchered their own songs. It reminded me of a pub singalong on New Years Eve, dreadful. And the crowd was like being stuck with 22,000 bank managers on a night out. It was fucking awful.
Barry and I looked at the t-shirts - even they were dull with no imagination, mostly of the tongue logo with some poor canvas prints of the albums covers for extortionate prices. The Stones like to fleece you - "I Know It's Only Rock'n'roll but We'll Fleece You..."
Saw Luke "Lucifer" Morley with his harem of women, he thought the sound was crap as well. My friend Gordon was there. All he said was 'Rock is dead, oh my god', and he loves the Stones.
I liked the venue - very easy to find everything and the staff were nice and helpful.

I was told at one point by a lady behind me to sit down so she could see during IORR, I mean what the fuck? We were in the midst of a really really fast set, danceable as fuck, we're not in the RAH love. Get on your feet and shake what your mumma gave yah, bay-bee.

From hellomagazine.com:
Rolling Stones give explosive homecoming concert in London
23 August 2007
There was no talk of bus passes or hot cocoa and slippers as veteran rock'n'roll rebels, the Rolling Stones wound up their two-year Bigger Bang Tour in spectacular style, playing the first of three nights at London's O2 Arena.

Mick and his Rolling Stones colleagues have the audience enthralled with their performance of Sympathy For The Devil, on one of the last dates of the band's Bigger Bang global tour. Photo: © Rex

The iconic singer had changed into a red tail coat especially for the number - just one of the many touches that had the 30,000-strong crowd eating out of his hand. Photo: © Getty Images
Even with a combined age of 253, the bad boy musicians managed to persuade critics - and fans alike - that they still possess the kind of raw energy that fills stadiums.
Strutting frontman Mick Jagger, 64, was clearly happy to be home, as he held court on stage dressed in drainpipe jeans, watched by his son James and girlfriend, model L'Wren Scott. "We've never played this part of the river," drawled the singer with the most famous pout in the music biz. "If you think about it, it's taken us 40 years to get from Richmond to Greenwich."
Though Mick also claimed that "home crowds are hard to please", the 30,000 punters, who'd paid around £150 each, certainly didn't seem to have any complaints. The excitement was palpable as the rockers - including guitarist Keith Richards, recovered from his accident in Fiji - roared through hits such as (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.
Wednesday night's show culminated with a rendition of Brown Sugar, complete with a cascade of party streamers from the rafters, which sent the capacity crowd wild with delight.

Hi guys, got to be quick cuz I'm on the internet at a hostel in London...but tuesday night was the best night of my life!!! Did anyone there near the B-Stage see a girl with long black hair get a hand slap by Mick and a pick handed directly to her by Keith? Well guess what, that was me!! Un-fucking-believable, I still don't believe it all hapened! I was in the front row directly in front of the B-stage, I had no idea how amazing those seats are! I just keep replaying it over and over again in my head...sorry I didn't meet you guys at the Pilot Inn...I started drinking with some of my roomates in the hostel and wound up running late, by the time I got to O2 it was about 730 and I figured everyone had left the Inn by then...what an incredible arena by the way, its more like a shopping mall!! The BEST Stones show ever, lucky show number 13 for me. Much better than Slane in many respects, especially because of the absence of the rain and mud! Sorry I didn't see any Rocks Offers though! They are still going so strong, there's no way this is going to be their last tour! Take care everyone!! |

You guys know me well.. not much for song by song review. All I can say is that this show was pretty close to flawless. Ronnie is in top form..the best I've ever seen him. Even Keith played well..when not posing. And Jagger..well he can't be topped.
All this talk of Keith?...to me he is really not much different from when I saw him last fall, except that he has slowed down and doesn't have the little pep in his step or his movements when he is posing.
The songs..well of course you already know Beast of Burden "made my night" as well as Let It Bleed. IORR this leg is a raw and rocking version and I really enjoyed it!!! I hate to admit it, but after Satisfaction (yes I knew all the songs) I got out my camera to practice taking photos of Mick Jagger..as he never holds still!! I love all those songs..but they have lost their lustre to me. All were flawless as Keith didn't screw up the opening chords. Enough is enough..for me at least.
But to those London folks in the audience, the last 6 songs were what they wanted and that was evidenced by their reaction!
OK enough from me.. Great night and great friends and great rock and roll

Finally managed to get to an internet cafe, as we're up in Camden for lunch.
The text messages I sent to GTRM said it all. Best of the 12 shows I've witnessed this tour. Whole band absolutely flawless from start to finish, the sound was monstrously good with the guitars loud and nasty.
Highlight for me was that jawdropping run from Rocks off, Let it bleed, Beast Of Burden and CYHMK. Heard some people say yesterday they thought 'beast' was a bit rough in parts, to me it was honestly as good as I've ever heard it. Never heard 'Rocks off' as good either, Mick hitting the high notes just like he used to. Keith disappeared for what seemed like quite a while during the intros - I assumed he was having a sly smoke backstage, but he walked out, started to introduce 'silver' and then absolutely contemptuously flicked his cigarette into the air. A wonderful 'we piss anywhere' -type moment. The crowd went nuts.
IORR works wonderfully as the first b-stage song. I thought for a minute there was a problem with the b stage because it didnt start moving until they were well into the second verse. Never heard the song as good as that.
They're capable of being individually inconsistent, but this shows that they still have some years left in them. Best I've seen since the first Wembley Licks show four years ago (and that was the best Stones gig I've EVER seen) and a performance on a level that I didnt think they were still capable of.
Oh - and that idiot who wrote that review saying the only good thing about the show was the James Brown song is a fucking tone deaf wanker with no taste who should be taken out at dawn and shot like a dog.
Thanks to GTRM and Egon for keeping things ticking over with the setlist. We had trouble getting a connection with Egon, but thanksfully things worked out.

Chiming into the other comments--
Wonderful to hear Beast of Burden and CYHMK...
Was on the floor and got somewhat near the back of the B stage when I moved over. Was only stopped once on the way and told to get down from standing on the chair by security when the stage was moving back.
A very cool part of this show was how happy the boys looked and how many times they thanked the audience and pointed to them after their numbers, especially at the B.
Sat next to the wonderful Rockman, just got lucky. |
