Well i think the time has come to do it!
---
here's may take on the album after 4/5 complete listenings
first the things that don't work for me
yes the album is too long as someone anticipated when we knew we would get 16 songs
i will burn my own edited copy of ABB without:
Streets of Love
Rain Fell Down
Let Me Down Slow
Biggest Mistake
SOL and RFD because of the overpruduction that destroyed the guitar sound. RFD is really disappointing because it is a good song if it were treated "matter of fact" as a new Hot Stuff or, to take Keith side, Big Enough, if you know what i mean. Lately on the record they got a dirty funk with Sweet Neocon.
LMDS because is too easy. Country meets pop but it does not work for me. Stones know or knew how to rewrite country being straightforward (Faraway eyes, Sweet Virginia) or melting it with r'n'r or other influences (HTW, half Beggars, a lot of Exile). To me country needs to be twisted to be good stones and not make it even easier and mellow. BM is an example in that. First it starts awfully with the chorus. Then it goes as a countish pop ballad too straight for my ears. Mick, later in the record take a sweet revenge working gospel and r'n'b' in what is the best track of this record for me and one of their best ballad ever, Laugh? I Nearly Died.
I know that many people like Dangerous Beauty but I am somehow puzzled by it and think of it as maybe the only real filler of the album. The song gets better in the second half when the boys loose their guitars/vocals but in the end it does not take off for me.
So my ABB goes like this:
1) Rough Justice
2) It Wont Take Long
3) Back Of My Hand
4) She Saw Me Coming
5) This Place Is Empty
6) Oh No! Not You Again
7) Laugh? I Nearly Died
8) Sweet Neo Con
9) Look What The Cat Drag In
10) Drive Too Fast
11) Infamy
This, IMHO,is 42min of Stones as good as they were at the end of the seventies.
The whole album, IMHO, marks a good point in being more solid than BTB and VL, with, in general, stronger songs and a stronger identity in terms of sound.
So, in my personal historical rating at the moment it stays slightly behind SG, B&B and TY.
That is a 7/8 out of 10 or a B- if you prefer.
RJ rocks loosely as they always should (that, IMHO, does not happen with DB) (8/10)
With IWTL Stones try to quote Stones'69 (they don't dare to do it very often)...and they got it right! The song is strong. Maybe even too strong as I feel the need of...i don't know a break with harp or organ or something. But it's a keeper (7.5/10)
BOMH fits perfectly in the tracklist (sure in mine!! hi hi) as they know how to play the blues. The song is maybe too "flat" as someone pointed out but here the most important thing is how they play it and they play it great (7.5)
What many people think of DB I think of SSMC. To me, the perfect single. A great wild riff, a shade of reggae that reminds me of Luxury, Keith on backing vocals as he should ever ever be, Mick crawling and not dictating the lyrics, no guitar solo as greatest stones songs don't need it. Highlight (9/10)
If IWTL quotes Stones'69, ONNYA is Stones'78 and god knows if it works. A soundflood with a great chuckberrysolo. I like when guitar/bass/drums and voice are melted like this. This is stones to me. (8/10)
LIND is something else. Here I am not afraid of any kind of comparison. The sound reminds me a lot of TY side 2, but this song would have been a highlight in LIB or SF, not to speak of B&B. It is top class r'n'b with a gospel soul. You don't get anything better. (10/10)
SNC is funk as i like the stones to funk: dirty and mean, with guitar sounding as Dance, Hot Stuff or Hey Negrita and obsessive and not decorative keyboards. Good harp, nice turn in the end. Unfortunately lyrics are pretty lame. I am not a neo con supporter but I think that Mick delivers a pretty childish political sermone here lacking all the ambiguities of great stones political songs (SFTD, SFM). (7.5/10)
I love LWTCDI. This song is way more than "Undercover + INXS" as someone said. Great song where guitars and percussions fight till the end to take over and you don't know who wins. The song fpr sure. The guitar solo is fantastic, the rhythm is smoking, mick is crawling again, thank god sometimes he forgets how to spell words. (8,5/10)
DTF is Stones'78 again and, again, it works. Strong r'n'r without compromise. Here is the rhythm guitar fighting with bass and then no "beautiful solo" (thank god) but dirty and mean slide again as in the beginning (RJ).
Then there's Keith
First thing i want to say is that his songs are both good but, differently from the rest of the album, i think Thief in the night and How can I stop were slightly better. At least this is the case for TPIE for me. A beautiful countryish ballad (i like it better than The Worst) but nothing extraordinary. A good break in the middle but piano, guitar and voice are too sharply separeted for my ears (7/10).
Much better with Infamy. A nice turn at he end of the record with great mick and a groove that, for me, is the trademark of this album (connect this with SSMC and SNC). (8/10)
To sum it up. I got what i was hoping for: a strong album that is for sure a step beyond their latest efforts. With an identity that could be even stronger had they limited the number of songs and/or been guided in that direction by some kind of good producer. |

I had 13/16 tracks in hi-fi, 2 in low-fi and 1 (Dangerous Beauty) I didn't have, only the 30 seconds snippet of Amazon.com. I got most files through various sources on the internet etc. So yeah, maybe you missed something, no need to sound offended here .
Here's the review I wrote on Aug 22:
Album order
RJ - Still have to get used to it. It rocks, but I still feel it's a bit Status Quo-ish.
6/10
Let Me Down Slow - bleh. Nothing stands out. Boring, standard, trivial.
2/10
It Won't Take Long - I liked it immediately. Tight, catchy, real Stones. Clean and guitar-driven, it grabs my attention. I like it miles better than RJ.
9/10
Rain Fall Down - funky, nice build-up. I loved it from 1st listen. I like Mick's rap-like lyrics-deliverance too.
8/10
SOL - catchy but unworthy. Irritating lyrics too. Too bad it couldn't be the first or last song on the album, would've made it easier to skip it...
1/10
BOMH - it's a beautiful blues. I don't think it sounds more like a blues-jam outtake so much, but I don't think it fits in the rest of the album for some reason. It distracts me and it interrupts my listening-flow sense of the album. But in itself I think it's a nice song. I liked the live version too.
7/10
She Saw Me Coming - don't like it. Repetitive it is, it lacks structure. Filler.
4/10
Biggest Mistake - love it. Musically it's a kind of easy-listening ballad, not very special. But it has nice lyrics and it does more to me emotionally than SOL for example. Nice one!
8/10
This Place Is Empty - love it too. Thru & Thru and How Can I Stop (even The Worst) still will be my other fav more recent Keef ballads, but this one sounds really sweet and sincere. It's beautiful. It took me some re-listenings to get the depth so to speak. Already one of my favorites of the album.
9/10
ONNYA - didn't like it from the PC days on. Still don't particularly love it, but it's ok. Won't play it more often than other songs though. Not exactly a filler, but it doesn't stand out for me.
6/10
Laugh, I Nearly Died - I have said it before, and many agree, this is wonderful. I love it so much, I find myself repeating this song again and again when listening to the album. The flow, the structure, the sound. It's beautiful. Mick's singin is so lovely, haunted and emotional. It does sound familiar sometimes, like OOC, but that doesn't bother me. The "been travelling for a while etc" bit completes the song so nicely, it's the icing on the cake. Delicate, climactic, and emotional. Long Live The Stones!
11/10
Sweet Neo Con - rubbish. I agree with the statement as a lefty, but that's not the point. The lyrics are cringe-worthy, Mick's nasal vocals are cringe-worthy, the music is ugh. Apart from the 'controversy' it's a filler. It wants to be danceable and funky, but I just find it completely annoying.
3/10
Look What The Cat Dragged In - 3 points for the title, brilliant . A dance beat, but with a raw edge. Nice melodies, nice tempo. Especially the fast-paced chorus. I like it a lot.
8/10
Driving Too Fast - another great rocker. Way better and more original than RJ and ONNYA imo. With a recognisable trademark riff. It reminds me of another Stones song, but every time I listen to it, it doesn't click. Tip-of-the-tongue thing. It has a bit of a darker bluesy edge to it, which makes it more original. Way to go!
9/10
Infamy - Keith's required reggae-inspired piece. Nice, but it doesn't do it for me. Bit of a filler. Maybe it will grow on me when heard live several times. I doubt it however.
4/10

interesting review, thanks
so that's it. i've read Gazza review of the 18th and, if not edited in the past few days/hours (oh no! how much can i miss?), it is "mostly from low-fi".
So i am a little bit surprised that a cd quality form does not make any difference for most.
Anyway you're right nothing to be offended. And no, i won't dig the archives and browse thru dogs, pets, neophones and "oh fucking arsome" "GI Joe you have pm" "Bush, check your mail" "Condy is to be greeted" to recollect the most deep insights. |

finally listened to the whole thing. the tracks they've made all to available - Rough Justice, SOL, Won't Take Long, Back Of My Hand, Place Is Empty I've all heard and didn't want to spoil the whole album that quickly. well, I cheated, but at least I waited to hear all the other tracks at once instead of listening to all the amazon samples. I think if I waited another week anyway I'd be so anxious to just hear the songs I haven't heard that I'd skip through half the tracks on the first spin.
and I like pretty much all the songs (there are a couple exceptions), but as an album I think its about as 'classic Stones' as Emotional Rescue. like all their other not so great albums (especially the Don Was era) its feels too formulaic. things like having exactly one too many ballads (SOL, Always Suffering, Blinded By Rainbows...) Song for song this may be the best album they've done since Tattoo You, but it just has its really predicatable moments. a bunch of great songs with a couple leftovers thrown in and it plays through just like Voodoo Lounge.
but the band plays great and theres plenty of really cool licks thrown into it. Charlie is playing great as always. Keith is proving he's still got it, and this is my chance to call BS on everyone who used his arthritis as the excuse for some of his fumblings on the Licks tour. this record sounds like a sign that he's got the juices flowing again and I think its gonna show in a much smoother tour. and while I've always considered Ronnie to be the luckiest man alive to be a member of this band he does have his moments and I'm hearing some of his best since he joined up on here. Mick on the other hand I think is the weakest link this time. complete roll reversal from 2002, there's just times on this album I feel like he's going through the motions and falling back into solo album mode. of course its Mick Jagger and he's gonna have some shining moments, but his lyrics and melodies
1. Rough Justice - great song, I just wish they had a better opener or at least more of an intro riff. everybody in the band sounds just as into it.
2. Let Me Down Slow - don't know why people aren't liking this one more. I think its a great album track. keeps up the quality of the album and shows a smoother side to it. its not edgy like Some Girls or Exile, but what do you expect? you're gonna get a more mature Stones just be glad they can age this gracefully. and I like what Ronnie does.
3. It Won't Take Long - cool riff in the beginning, but didn't take many listens for me to decide its this album's "Low Down"
4. Rain Fall Down - this one should've been scrapped easily. the last song was too mediocre to afford to be followed up with a Jagger solo song like this one. nothing Stonesy about it but instead of getting Keith to do something funky like Black & Blue he just says 'fuck it, lets call in Matt Clifford for some programming'. Suck On The Jugular was way better than this.
5. Streets Of Love - yeah yeah, go on and bitch. 'I'm gonna rank this song negative infinity out of 10 because the less I like this song the cooler I am and if I admit I like it even a little bit people will think I'm gay'. gimme a break. there's useless and then there's Gomper-awful. this song gets an immediate 4 points just for not being actually offensive to the ears. there's nothing worse here than Out Of Tears. its just the excess ballad is all. hell, would you rather have Any Way You Look At It? thought not.
6. Back Of My Hand - damn good job at a blues tune for a modern Stones album.
7. She Saw Me Coming - reminds me of Black & Blue a lot. by no means a brilliant song but I dig it even if its repetitive. between this track and the last one the album's starting to loosen up in a good way.
8. Biggest Mistake - typical ballad but its... a very good one at that. borderline on being too Mick-solo for the Stones but unless Mick has another Wandering Spirit left in him he ain't gonna have a solo album that deserves this one, so better use it here.
9. This Place Is Empty - a classic Keith ballad. I can't honestly come up with a bad thing to say about it and still be able to defend 'You Got The Silver'. its a shame whoever confuses this song to be just a typical ballad
10. Oh No, Not You Again - well with the band knowing their parts on the studio version that's a big improvement, but it still doesn't have a melody and brings back bad memories of Mick's singing at the press conference. I would rather they ditched this one than Streets of Love. Micks most boring vocal delivery thrown on top of a really tame All Down The Line. sorry, this has "album filler" written all over it, no matter what Keef & Ron do to try and save it.
11. Dangerous Beauty - don't exactly have anything overwhelmingly positive to say about this one. wouldn't call it filler - so lets just say its spacing the album out from the really good stuff
12. Laugh, I Nearly Died - I give it a 9/10. only song I'm gonna bother to rank just because I have to knock a point off from saying its the greatest song since 1981. I'm a bit let down from all that hype. but its a gem, no doubt about that. only thing is it reminds me of Steel Wheels particularly with Mick's fake sounding vocals. personally I love Steel Wheels but it seems it hasn't aged too well with most Stones fans. so I expect a lot of people overrating it now to turn their backs on it in a couple years after this album settles out of its new status. I think it'll grow on me personally though
13. Sweet Neo Con - you guys were right this one is bad. the lyrics, the structure, everything. I can't even call it 'ambitious' to make it sound not as bad as it is like some of the Stones other less successful attempts. its just pathetic - starts as a waste and only goes downhill. dare I say it? "Bon-Jovi-Bad"
14. Look What The Cat Dragged In - this is a pretty cool one. really doesn't sound like Keith's style at all - great to see after all these years to not be able to accuse him of sitting on his ass. song's hardly a masterpiece but its a really original sound for the Stones
15. Driving Too Fast - cool riff. I might expect something a little faster being the end of the album (for Mick anyway) - and I kinda like that it doesn't come off as a last-ditch effort to put some more rock to the album, because it really doesn't need it.
16. Infamy - not what I expected. I thought this was gonna be Keith's new Thru & Thru, and maybe its a little disappointing after all the eclectic things about it, but hell, this is a good one. I had no trouble making up my mind about this one.
so hey, we've got a great 12 or 13 track album with a little filler. I'm pleased, lets hope for another

last night was my "first time."
1. Rough Justice - Best rocker on the album.
2. Let Me Down Slow - solid.
3. It Won't Take Long - the one rocker that i think is expendable.
4. Rain Fall Down - i really like it. Kind of an ASMB that actually works.
5. Streets Of Love - ain't so bad, and almost catchy.
(in my opinion, starting with #6, the album blows up)
6. Back Of My Hand - stunning.
7. She Saw Me Coming - simple, silly, perfect. "she was a piece of work."
8. Biggest Mistake - nice guitar, and nice backing vocals.
9. This Place Is Empty - good.
10. Oh No, Not You Again - almost as good as RJ, but not quite.
11. Dangerous Beauty - dark, and cool as shit.
12. Laugh, I Nearly Died - best track on the album.
13. Sweet Neo Con - love it, even "the shits" line.
14. Look What The Cat Dragged In - THE sleeper here. great stuff.
15. Driving Too Fast - pretty good, i love the chorus.
16. Infamy - hypnotique, should go on for 10 minutes.
Yeah Some Guy, the album is Hot! Mick has outdone himself.
easily the best album since Tattoo You, and by a country mile.
thanks boys

well, I've heard it in "hi fi" sounds lots of times in the last few days (as well as having heard the tracks that were on rs.com before that) and naturally I like it more than I did 10-12 days ago
1) Rough Justice - great kick start to the album 8/10
2) Let Me Down Slow - gorgeous. 8/10
3) It Wont Take Long - a snorter . 9/10
4) Rain Fall Down - growing on me. 8/10
5) Streets of Love - as an album track, its not as bad as it is as a single. 7/10
6) Back of my hand - Simple but effective. 8/10
7) She Saw Me Coming - Raucous and fun. 8/10
8) Biggest Mistake - one of the most beautiful lyrics Jagger has written in decades. 10/10
9) This Place Is Empty - another one thats grown on me. 8/10
10)Oh No, Not you Again - I wanted to dislike it after hearing the silly lyrics, but its infectious. 8/10
11) Dangerous Beauty - The best riff on a Stones song since "Start me up". In fact, its a better song. A tune thats genuinely menacing. I like my Stones riffs loud and nasty and this suffices. After I first heard it, I went out and killed someone, just for the hell of it. 10/10
12) Laugh I Nearly Died - Perfect. With the possible exception of "Continental Drift", the best Stones song in the last 25 years...maybe longer. 10/10
13) Sweet NeoCon - the only real misfire on the album. Awful lyrics, although the tune is growing on me. 5/10
14) Look What The Cat Dragged In - Undercover meets INXS. This is becoming the sleeper on the album for me. 8/10
15) Driving too Fast - top notch driving rocker. 9/10
16) Infamy - Still havent got into this one yet, but give it time. 6/10
I'm happy to say I didnt think they had one like this still in them and theyve proved me wrong. I figured that with the wait theyd give us a good album, but this is a genuinely excellent one. With a couple of exceptions, Jagger's lyrics are better than they have been in decades, Charlies drumming makes you wanna kick doors down and the guitar playing is superb. Great melodies, thunderous riffs and the Stones getting back to basics and remembering what made them the band they are.
Its fucking brilliant and I DEMAND they play all of it live.

I haven't heard the album yet so I'm in no position to analyze anthing yet and, when I hear the album, you may very well be correct but I have to admit this statement puzzles me:
"Mick on the other hand I think is the weakest link this time. complete roll reversal from 2002, there's just times on this album I feel like he's going through the motions and falling back into solo album mode. of course its Mick Jagger and he's gonna have some shining moments, but his lyrics and melodies"
Actually, from sources I'm familiar with, most of this material is Mick's not Keith's. How can the album be very good if one of the major contributor's is merely going through the motions???
I'm one of the those people that get annoyed at this Keith is the Stones nonsense just as I get annoyed at the general public when they call it Mick Jagger & the Rolling Stones. In my book, they both got it wrong. It's the Rolling Stones period. From my prospective, Mick & Keith have a working partnership that work's better and is much, much more creative when they are working together as opposed to putting together solo songs or solo projects. |

I meant Mick's vocal delivery & lyrics. some of its better than others, but overall this isn't one of my favorites. the musical composition on this album is some of their best in years, and yes, I'm well aware many of these songs looked like Keith had anything to do with them. some is better than others I don't mean to bash Mick. the Stones have some great Mick albums (Tattoo You) and some great Keith albums (Voodoo Lounge) and occasionally they've had some that were both (Sticky Fingers). in terms of performance, I'm a lot more interested in what Keith & Ron are doing this time. |

To me the test of an excellent album is how often you play it over and over again. And that is exactly what I have been doing, as well as making all my non-Stones friends listen to it!!! Even the songs I wasn't sure of at first(neoCon and She Saw Me Coming)), are songs I am singing while I write this post. Thank You Rolling Stones for creating a great album for my(OUR) listening pleasure! |

First 2 listens I thought " solid...decent" better than Bridges. Perhaps a little long.
Third listen was like "um..really good"
By today, Im like " fucking yes" Every song has something positive to offer.
Even Neocon with its silly lyrics has some magic in there( the yeah, yeah, yeah by Jagger at the end is infectcious)
Did anybody catch the lyrics to Dangerous Beauty. Its about that ugly marine girl torturing the Iraqies with the sex poses at gun point. I forgot her name, but the song is definately inspired by her. |

Did anybody catch the lyrics to Dangerous Beauty. Its about that ugly marine girl torturing the Iraqies with the sex poses at gun point. I forgot her name, but the song is definately inspired by her.
Lyndie England? Fuck, youre kidding me...
If it was inspired by her it would be called "Trailer Trash Gremlin" |

So how long are the album tracks? Are the versions of RJ, SOL, and BOMH on Itunes single edits, or full versions?
Full versions
However, the FIRST version that we heard of "Streets of Love", which circulated as an mp3 taken from a radio broadcast and which clocked in at just under 4 minutes is definitely an edit (aside from the fact that the radio station ended it early) because its definitely shorter in the middle of the song than it is on the album version.
However, the single that I bought clocks in at 5:09 which is also a full length version. So, I'm curious as to where the edited version comes from.. |

shit, Bob...now you mention it, I reckon you're right!
I think Mick should be sued under the trade descriptions act for using the word 'beauty' if its about her, but some of the lyrics make a lot of sense when you think about it:
"In your high school photo/you look so young and naive/now I heard youve got a nickname/the lady with the leash"
"you're doin' your duty"
"who you got there in that hood/you look so fancy in those photographs/with your rubber gloves on/you're a favourite with the chiefs of staff"
"keepin everyone awake at night/with a touch of the prods"
"if I was your captain, would you salute me"
"youre one bad apple in a box"
"dealin' in electric shocks"

ya beat me to it Gazza. this is what I got from it:
Dangerous Beauty
-------------
in your high school photo, you look so young and naive
Now I heard you got a nickname, The ______ of the leash
_____ on a midnight shift, I bet you had your fair share of stiffs.
There were onerous orders(?), I got to admit.
Cuz you're a dangerous, dangerous,dangerous beauty
It's so painfully plain to us, you're doing your duty.
Who you got there in that hood, you look so fancy in those photographs.
With your rubber gloves on, you're a favorite with the chiefs of staff.
You're doing such a wonderful job, you're a natural at workin with dogs.
Keeping everyone awake at night, with a touch of the prods.
(Chorus)
Disdainfully painfully, _____________
(Chorus)
If i was your captain, would you salute me.
(Chorus)
You're one bad apple in a box, dealing out electric shocks.
I see the gloves are coming off
If looks_______, I bet you would shoot me

Been listening non stop to that 65' mp3 that got pulled and I must say I'm stunned. I was a bit worried when it was said that this was a "raw record", not sure what's raw about it, maybe they meant "not overproduced". On the other hand I also couldn't stop listening to VL when it came out and would now rate it as one of their most boring albums.
This one has a good variety of tunes and new styles too, new phrasing, new sounds, new guitar licks (solo in DB or arpegios in LINT). The absolute killer to me is "Rain Fall Down", best groove I've heard since Curtis Mayfield's "Billy Jack" and Mick's sleazy urban lyrics. Succeeds where Sex Drive failed miserably. |

Good lord, what kind of sick person would write a song about her?!?! I mean, we're talking about a guy who has inspired God knows how many American criminals, those tattooed, toothless types you see lurking around places you want to just keep driving through. They all sit around saying, "Well, hell, if it's ok by Mick, I guess it's ok by me. I'll just go beat somebody's head in with a pool cue."
