While driving around this week, I noticed a billboard for the Sex Pistols concert at some Atlantic City casino.
What a joke.
Meanwhile the Stones are kicking everyone's ass, playing clubs and theaters and having the time of their life.
Didn't the Sex Pistols claim the Stones/Who etc to be relics who phone it in and rely on old songs?
Fuck 'em!

You guys are clueless. Not that that's a bad thing! The Pistols are one of the GREAT bands of all time, and I'm certainly not alone in that opinion. Never Mind The Bollocks is in every top ten list of greatest albums of all time, and belongs there. (Some Girls was a direct reaction to it.) I saw them on their '96 reunion tour, and it was a show that delivered everything I expected and more. One of the greatest non-Stones shows I've ever seen. The fact that they're playing Atlantic City is a)hilarious, b)no weirder than the Stones and Dylan playing the same rooms, and c) a sign of the End Times.
Their shows are GREAT. They play all of "Bollocks" plus "No Fun" and "Steppin' Stone". Plus they are worth seeing just to say you saw them. Johnny's a great ."No future for you" has more resonance now than it did in '76. |
|
|
| Mr T |
every list - really? news to me. The only thing I find to be similar between EVERY one of those lists is that they are terrible. I have yet to meet someone I'd consider a legitimate musician that likes the Sex Pistols. On the other hand - they rank #1 in my list of unorchesrated noise
I would without a doubt rather listen to Justin Timberlake as well as those other 3 (not surprised a Sex Pistols fan wouldn't appreciate Queen). I don't care for Timberlake's style either - but I bet most of his bashers on this board wouldn't hate his stuff nearly as much if no one told them who it was by. |
|
|
| sirmoonie |
Pete Townshend loved the Sex Pistols. Dedicated an album to them.
Is he a legit musician?
Maybe not, The Who were certainly purveyors of unorchestrated noise. God bless 'em!
Neil Young loved the Sex Pistols. Sang a song about Johnny Rotten.
Is he legit?
I'm sure there are others. Fuck, I'll bet Johnny Cash liked the Sex Pistols. He likes all kinds of different stuff.
Mongo?
I've been up for 38 hours. I can barely think, and I stll know you are a humongous bonehead Mr. T. |
|

yes because Pete Townshend likes it must make it so - and if you need personal insults to get your point across, more power to you
[Edited by Mr T] |

|
| sirmoonie |
No, no, chickie. You said there were no legit musicians that liked the Sex Pistols (actually you said you never met any, but you meant there were none). I gave you at least two.
Now you're doing some muskrat love deal and trying to turn this back on me.
What FPM said about Bollocks is true and you know it. Deep down, in places you don't like to think about, you know it is The Vibe. |
|
|
| Mr T |
No - actually I said I never met any and meant exactly that. However I'm fully aware that there's a lot of good musicians out there who like shit. Need I list some of the things Mick Jagger has stated he liked? or is that not nessessary as you've already taken his advice and bought CD's by each artist.
I like to take what rockstars say with a grain of salt - especially when it comes to taste. Most of the time rockstars enjoy things because they wish they could borrow something from them to appeal to people in similar ways - like the Stones borrowing the Sex Pistol's style for Some Girls (I believe it was you who stated). Now, had they stolen their TALENT, Some Girls would probably be one damn sucky album |
|
|
| FPM C10 |
The fact that they're getting things all riled up here just by existing is a tribute to their particular brand of greatness. They earned a niche in rock & roll that will be theirs in perpetuity, and I thank the void where god used to be for the fact that they still come around, with no contract and no new record, to rub our noses in it.
The Sex Pistols are an archetype. Like 'em or lump 'em, they are one of the greatest rock bands EVER. Them playing a casino is HEROIC. It is also APOCALYPTIC. These are the End Times!
One of the key elements of perfect rock & roll is SNOT, and the Pistols hold the patent.
I know my good friend Cardinal Fang likes the Sex Pistols, and he is a highly esteemed musician. But you're allowed to hate them, and in fact I'm sure they would prefer you did. |
|
|
| Mr T |
Well, I don't agree with your opinion but I can accept it easy enough. I don't like em, you do - that's simple enough.
As far as your first statement in that post... I'm not impressed. The Sex Pistols aren't stirring things up because they are totally bad ass or because they offended people or whatever.(I assure you I'm not music conservative BTW) They're subject to debate because some peope like them and others don't. I mean - look at all the Justin Timberlake crap on the board now. As rock fans - is there any reason we should even concern ourselves with such pop shit? Of course not. Does that mean we should give him credit because his presence is so impactful in our lives even though it crosses all logic of what we should be concerned with? I don't think so. The Sex Pistols seem to want to be a bit different, and build a legacy on actually being bad (and I don't mean rebellious - although that was obviously another main goal). The fact that they should "deserve" more credit for being such an atrocity to so many ears is comparible to the 5 year old logic that no means yes on Opposite Day - I don't consider that thinking outside the box.
I won't argue that they had a niche - so does Queen(just an example), who gets at least as much musical respect and seem to be met by constant resentment on this board. Well, if your gonna judge talent on revolutionizing music, don't focus on just the Pistols.
And personally I see no reason to care what type of venue they play in. They're people who need to earn a living and I doubt they're in a position to pick and choose what stages are worthy of them
I do agree that they are an archetype - and I do agree that love them or hate them they still define what they do, but saying that makes them one of the greatest bands ever is stretching that point to a whole different meaning |
|
|
| MarthaMyDear |
FPM, them playing a casino now is like what they did on their
FIRST EVER (with Sid, of course) US tour, as in playing that
cowboy bar in Texas, don't you think?!?!?! FUCKING
HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD, THEY KILL
ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JOHN LYDON is just a fricking
GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only do they SOUND just EXCELLENT
now but Johhny is FUNNIER AND FUNNIER as time goes by,
IMHO... One thing I LOVE about seeing them is they deliver on
ALL levels entertainment-wise... Musically EXCELLENT and
leaving NOTHING OUT (well, they don't HAVE alot to play,
actually, unfortunately), comedy (ESPECIALLY THE UNEXPECTED,
REAL-LIFE COMEDY THAT CAN ONLY BE SEEN AT PUNK ROCK SHOWS,
IMHO... Spur-of-the-moment/real life comedy... Like some guy
throwing a whole beer on Johhny and Johnny just finishing the
song like nothing happened and THEN just losing it on the
guy... lol............................... It's sad but he is
even FUNNY when he's mad!!! lol....................... :P :P
:P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P ),
high drama that 9 out of 10 times USUALLY happens with
Johnny... I can practically see the rest of the band YAWN as
John goes on the millionth rant, etc.... CRACKING-
UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, always something
interesting to look at... Well, I do have to say I'm not
liking his weird hair and clothes of late (I prefer the
bleached blonde hair or ESPECIALLY the orange hair, etc....
lol....................... :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P
)... But, one thing John does
that is just EXCELLENT is that he talks and talks and talks
inbetween songs and it fucking RULES because NO ONE DOES THAT
and it's just plain old fun to hear and FUNNY!!! In fact, he
can't fucking SHUT-UP which is excellent... I can't believe
the shows are only FIFTY-FUCKING-DOLLARS FOR THE HIGHEST-
PRICED SEATS (?!?!?!).... And, to pay THAT to see THEM at a
frickin' CASINO?!?!?! MAN!!! WHAT A FUCKING
VALUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm actually going to wait probably
until the day of the show here and try to do that
ticketbastard-thing where a good seat or two pops-up or just
buy a ticket or two from a scalper, etc., 'cause I can't
spend ANY money right now, etc., but I know I'll be able to
get good seats, etc....
And, Mr. T.... I actually LOVE Queen and actually like two
Justin Timberlake songs (SHUDDER!!!!! I KNOW!!! I'm sorry,
Sir Moonie... YOU'D BETTER BE
AT THE GET-TOGETHER!!!!!!!! lol.............
Seriously, THOUGH!!!
), so I love a variety of music... I am
telling you, though... Check them out, if you dare, and I am
telling you... Fifty bucks... How can you go wrong?!?!?!
ALSO, they have the BEST audiences for people-watching
(actually, old friends-avoiding!!! CRACKING-UP!!!!!!
lol....... Nevermind... lol....................... :P :P :P
:P :P :P :P :P :P :P )...
It is WELL worth your money, to say the LEAST!!!
Take care and DO ROCK ON!!!

You can look at the Pistols today in two ways-humourous or pitiful. I find them to be ironic and still with a fuck-us attitude. Johnny Rotten knows they're old relics like the people they dissed, but they won't go down looking like old geezer losers with no more attitude in them at all (like they accused the Stones of in the late 70s). Sure they're old and washed-up, but at least they still bring the same hell-raising, rebel attitude just in stranger settings. That's the self-mocking part; Johnny Rotten's ambition is to play a high-class casino or club while belting out punk screamers and suicide versions of standards such as "My Way." The Sex Pistols are quite funny, they teach us how to make fun of yourself and that age can't deter a fighting spirit.
The Stones are still showing they can rock, but it's just not the same. They seem to lack, as jb so constantly harangues, some punch and/or attitude. THey seem content to play, entertain and not give any inkling that they're bitter/happy/depressed/what have you old dudes. Though not as a band, each member shows some spark in their age: Mick shows energy, Charlie still has his wry sense of doing the job, Ronnie is really into the music and Keith seems humble, cool and elegantly disoriented. But if they had the same self-mocking attitude as the Pistols, it could really be an interesting thing to see. |

Then what was your point? That there are a lot of good musicians who like the Sex Pistols, but because you haven't been fortunate enough to meet them yet, the Sex Pistols must suck?
I think what you are saying is that there is a cut-off at some relative level of musical virtuosity, below which good rock and roll can't be made. Thats just not true, and you know all the reasons it isn't.
FPM is right, the Pistols had The Snot. The whining on Bollocks, especially songs like Anarchy ("another council tenanceeeee"), P-Vacant, and Submission is the musical genius you are looking for T-Bone. Angels in heaven wish they could piss and moan about everything with such grace and elegance as the Sex Pistols did. |

Then what was your point?"
ummm, you have to keep reading...
my point is I don't consider "rock stars" and "musicians" the same thing always. Purist musicians, people who's integrity is unaltered by fame, will pick apart a piece of music and observe for the musical qualities. Rock stars, while most often sharing the same interest in musical composition, also learn to respect artists for finding new ways to hit commercial success. I'm sure if I were Pete Towshend I'd like to see people with a different look on the music industry for a change too, but does that means that if he likes an artist - I shall automatically give said artist credit for impressing me with their talent? I don't know about you, but I'd rather make my own assessments. And as much as I love the Who's classic work, Pete Townshend's opinion is worth precisely a turd to me. There's something about the Sex Pistol's energy that I can understand how some people could admire it, but energy and ability to perform are two different things.
If you want to consider the Sex Pistols revolutionary for their attitude, I won't argue with that. Great - they're punks, they're ironic, whatever. I'm not particularly impressed by that, but I won't take credit for them as entertainers of some type being as they have obviously entertained some. I fail to appreciate any of that personally, but then, I missed that generation, and have been exposed to music that blows the Sex Pistols away in terms of controversy. The Sex Pistols can keep their personal politics, I really don't give a damn, but props to them for leaving whatever imprint they have, I would just rather not listen to them. |
|

quote: Mr T wrote:

Goes w/o saying. If you look back, it was you who introduced confirmation by third parties, not me.
quote: If you want to consider the Sex Pistols revolutionary for their attitude, . . .
I meant the expression of attitude in Bollocks, rather than actually having an attitude. Sorry if I was unclear.
quote:
....and have been exposed to music that blows the Sex Pistols away in terms of controversy.
Like what? The SPs really did raise quite the ruckus, whether you like them or not.
Anyway, opinions and all that, blah, blah. I can't understand how any rock fan could listen to Bollocks and not be amazed by the sound. A lot of brilliant new material in there, that stands up today long after punk got saturated and morphed into something else. |
|
|
| Mr T |
"Goes w/o saying. If you look back, it was you who introduced confirmation by third parties, not me."
that wasn't confirmation, that was reinforcement. I formed my opinions of the Sex Pistols long before I'd heard what anyone else had to say, nor do I care to this day. My apologies if using that arguement prematurely made my point seem hypocritical.
"I meant the expression of attitude in Bollocks, rather than actually having an attitude. Sorry if I was unclear."
glad you appreciate the importance of semantics. Well, regardless of and difference in implied meanings my position on the topic is no different. Attitude, or "expression of attitude" rarely impresses me. Most often its all for shock value as far as I'm concerned, and the Sex Pistols don't shock me, but I recognize that it was a different day and age when they were in their prime.
"....and have been exposed to music that blows the Sex Pistols away in terms of controversy." "Like what? The SPs really did raise quite the ruckus, whether you like them or not."
Oh I believe you. I know they did. And they've been outdone since. Maybe the subject of anarchy isn't the most prevalent topic in music that causes controversy, but times change, and people don't react to the same attitudes the same ways in different times, I think you'd agree. That's one of the reasons I don't find the Sex Pistols timeless. They did a better job defining their time - froma counter culture point of view. As far as who? Well, just pick any of the anti pop rock/metal bands that have came out since then. They may not have affected their surroundings the same, but they're musical/lyrical content goes a step farther. So, you can choose to judge things 2 ways - with or without reaction of other people. I'd rather just look at the music for what it is and screw antone else's reactions, I see no reason to get affected by how other people were affected 25 years ago.
"Anyway, opinions and all that, blah, blah. I can't understand how any rock fan could listen to Bollocks and not be amazed by the sound. A lot of brilliant new material in there, that stands up today long after punk got saturated and morphed into something else."
I hate to think of myself as a 'rock fan'. Seems a little bit confining to me. I'd much rather look outside rock n roll for something that hits me in a different way than wait for the next big thing of one genre to come along. I find its better for perspective |

If you read the EXCELLENT and actually EXTREMELY hilarious John Lydon autobiography, John Lydon: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs, his attitude is NOT just an EXPRESSION of attitude... He's actuallly still the same way but softer around the edges (age)... He's angry, funny, and obnoxious and always HAS been... They didn't do things just for shock value 'cause they actually lived the life they came across as living (they had dominitrix friends, etc., and were REALLY living an "underground lifestyle" which was considered shocking back then and even now in some places, etc.)...

I have met LOTS of good musicians who will tell you that they wouldn't be nearly as good if they had never been exposed to the Sex Pistols. FPM included(he's about as solid a bass player as you'll likely ever meet).
So either you don't get out much...or you just don't know many good musicians.

I've been trying to stay out of this, but I can't.
I'm listening to "Bullocks" right now and it rocks!! I remember what it was like in the mid 70's.....what were the options.....REO, STYX, Kansas, or better yet....DISCO??
The Sex Pistols were the eptiome of anti-EVERYTHING, especially "corporate Rock". They didn't care if you liked them. They'd be the first to admit it wasn't about muscianship. It was about ATTITUDE. Rock n Roll is meant to be subversive by nature. The Pistols were to many of us in '77 what the Stones were to many in '63.
The NY Dolls, the Ramones and the Pistols awakened "kids" to the fact that they, too, could pick up a guitar and play!!
"God Save the Queen" is a classic song!!!

I am a working musician. ( <---- See my photo)
I LOVE THE SEX PISTOLS. I've "borrowed" many licks from Steve. I worked with Steve in 1996 and confessed to Steve one on one at that time that I had ripped his solo from "Satellite" on one of my songs that came out on an album in 1993. Steve laughed and confessed to me where HE RIPPED THAT SAME SOLO FROM !!! I will never forget the time I spent with Steve and his "realness". It also gave me the opportunity to "verify" with Steve if I had every single Pistols lick that I taught myself to be "correct" or not. For the most part I "did" but I did learn that Steve played the "Pretty Vacant" lick from the 2nd position instead of the 5th position that I had taught myself. I now play it in 2nd position. (just like Steve !!)
Speaking of "ripping off" the Sex Pistols, lets NOT forget that The Rolling Stones ripped two things off of The Pistols:
#1- The song "Liar". The Stones song "Lies" is totally a rewrite of The Pistols song "Liar"
#2- The "Destroy" shirt on the 1978 Tour and Mick "tearing it off". Many of you have seen Mick wearing the "Destroy" T-Shirt on the Saturday Night Live broadcast or at some of the 1978 USA Tour shows. Mick would wear the Destroy shirt and then tear it off. Johnny "Rotten" Lydon was doing this SAME EXACT routine about a year and several months earlier. YES, Mick DID rip this off. (No Pun intended :-)
Remember a while back when Rolling Stone magazine voted "Bollocks" to be the 2nd greatest album of all time ? IMO, they got it RIGHT for once !! (they voted Exile "3rd")
The thing with the Pistols, you either "GET IT" or you DON'T.
By the way, are you the same "Steel Wheels" as my friend from Gasland ? The spelling is different so probably not ?
You ever see the Pistols live ? I HAVE. They either ROCK, or they really blow ! There's no "in between" with the Pistols. ALL or Nothing.
I have EVERY SINGLE thing the Pistols EVER recorded. I say this to establish that I DO KNOW what I'm rambling about. When I say "EVERYTHING", I mean EVERY recording session and almost every single show they ever played, I have it. I've got several hours of video stuff too. I've got a bunch of autographs that Steve did for me too.
I'm going to go make a sandwich now, so I'm Gonna Bail.

Hello Marta !!
I know exactly "where" you and Steve "went". lol (Say no more !!) The night Steve and I hung out together it was all "sparkling water with lime" with Steve and nothing else. (not me though ;-) That was then, this is now !
I'm trying to remember what year exactly it was when you and I met ? 1987 or 1988 ? I DO remember it WAS December and it WAS at Duck Soup on Sunset Blvd. I remember the girl at the door was trying to tell me that I couldn't bring Ronnie's 1234 & Gimme Some Neck in the building. I gave her back a look like, "Honestly, WTF are YOU going to do to ME ?" I ran into Bill German (Beggars Banquet) a few minutes later and he told me NOT to worry about it. He DID warn me though. Bill said, "Jimmy, do NOT ask Ronnie about any bootlegs !!" (he was ADAMANT about that era)
I think it was 1987 when we met wasn't it ?
Until the next time we meet, stay beautiful !!
Love, Jimmy |
