you missed the best one: the 75/76 tour was the best Ronnie ever played on. He was eager, his solos were fantastic and together with Keith he formed the best tandem in the world. Second best tour: 78.
Afterwards it went downhill. Every tour after 78 he played worse. The last Licks tour was really all time low. |

Best I ever saw him was 1975. No comparison, really. He was incredible that tour. |

'02? What's that doing in this multiple choice?
'78 by a mile. '81 a distant second. |

well, 02 the first shows,
99? that was not ronnie playing,
81, some great moments, but great fuck ups too (also by the band)
78 GREAT
75 also some great moments |

for me - 78 because of the some girls stuff.....
he was ferocious on those leads and worked well with jagger's rythmn guitar;
after that, he got too comfortable with being a stone - he'd already got the gig. |

-75/76 is probably my favorite... he and Keith played that song, was it Sure the one you need? on one of the first shows.... sweet but it really dont fit as a stones song IMO
i was wondering has Ronnie ever performed his matereal with the stones?? or has he had lead vox on some song ?
cuz im remembering something but i cant put my finger on it... maybe im thinkin of Sure the one you need...
also 2002/03 was a great tour , i loved he's sitar playing on JJF and Street fighting man!!!! |

Sure The One You Need was played by The Stones in 1975, very early in the tour. It's the only time They've ever played a track off a solo record by any band member... |

You must be joking! Never heard such a terrible solo. Jagger saved the song with his harmonica. |

MSG version on FF...a great one with a perfect soulful Ronnie solo... |

75 was the best by far. 78 had it's moments good and bad. He did some nice 94 shows. 97-99 he was MIA. |

best tour with Ronnie?
From the perspective of his playing - 78 for me, even though some shows are a bit inconsistent.
he was good in '75 too, although its not a tour I'm musically fond of.
2002 was a return to some kind of form, although by the time they got to Europe he was less consistent, but still capable of some great moments (he was definitely MVP for me at Wembley that night at the end of August)
For most of the 90's, he became more and more inaudible in the mix next to Keith, with the low being the BTB/No Security tour. I hope he paid for his ticket into the No Security shows, because he was pretty much a spectator for most of them and Keith carried him. To be fair, he was fantastic at Shepherds Bush later in the tour but generally it was a tour where he spent more time drinking and posing than playing

You mean he uses a lot distortion so you can't hear he is not hitting a note properly! |

75/76 hands down
but one that wasnt mentioned that I thought he picked up his game on was the No Security tour.
he was inconsistent. But overall seemed to be more focus and put on more of an effort. i.e. more playing and less waving to the crowd
I always thought that he played like a child that had just been scolded (probably true) and knew he needed to behave or else.

I knew I'd come in here sooner or later...
I think 75's the right answer. '81 is a close second. I like some of the '78 stuff but it's a little too fast and loose for my taste. They tightened up that hard sound on the '81 tour for the most part - then they all fell apart again. Didn't they put up a sign backstage to the effect of "Do not feed the Ronnie!" to try and control his coke habit?
Yeah. '02 was great until '03 rolled around. I think he "lost strength on the road," shall we say. Initially it almost seemed like he was covering for Keith, who did a lot of crowd-mugging early on. That changed pretty quick in Europe - I have a boot of the first Munich show and dear god is it *terrible*. Ronnie is nowhere, and when he does play you wish he wouldn't.
I still stick by the "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" theory, though - on most nights when they said "OK, we're playing 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking,' get ready," he sobered up and played well. Other times? Forget it. Remember Olympia? There's a lovely editing job that was done on the Four Flicks DVD, because he did *not* play on that "Hand Of Fate". |
