aladdinstory what does everyone think of it now? has it aged well? is it listened to more or less than other stones in your collection. nearly ten years have passed so it's probably a decent time to see if its stood the test of time, or sunk like stone.

i still remember the excitement of them crossing the brooklyn bridge, watching it on VH1, in the vintage red caddy, with what sounded like an early version of Juiced blasting out the radio speakers, and all the rumored titles for what became B2B, like Blessed Poison, etc...

a decade has passed, my how time does fly. of course back then we probably expected more than one studio release in that time. but now it truly is the rolling stones rock n roll circus travelin' barnum and bailey style to a city near you, sadly almost a sideshow attraction. but in '97, a mere 3yrs after VL and just 18 mos after Stripped, it seemed the stones had gained momentum again, releasing new material, going on tour, the possibilities seemed endless, the skies the limit.

yeah, it's in french, but hell RO is an international phenomena!

I think it's easily the best of the post Dirty Work albums. Bursting with ideas, not all good, but all, I think, valid. It has some really good songs. They were coming off a very artistically successful European tour in 1995 and flowed relatively straight into the album - almost like they were a real band again. Also there's that tension between Mick and Keith that has traditionally made for good Stones music.

The "big band" sound doesn't bother me that much - at this point they knew that they were, what, a 12 piece? And they weren't going to turn back. Better to utilize all of your components to make for actual music rather than annoyingly shallow additions to established arrangements. This fact played itself out on the road - Out of Control (until some asshole got the idea to put in a cage) and Saint of Me were outstanding live tracks and both utilized the whole of the "Stage Stones" like real band members rather than backups.

B2B has got some serious problems, principals being that it is too long, has a horribly bad cover and was disastrously marketed. But when I run it through the filter in my mind that makes all the modern Stones albums 10 songs long and properly sequenced for a single LP, it comes out a winner.

And I don't care what anyone says - sampling Biz Markee on a Stones record is cool.

Gazza Great fucking record. Still love it.

A lot of people moan that its not a "proper" Stones album (whatever that means) because of the way they recorded it (different producers, lots of extra musicians, many of the songs being written by one Glimmer twin instead of both) but thats no big deal. 'Exile' was recorded in a chaotic, haphazard fashion as well and had lots of fairy dust sprinkled on it when they got to LA and dubbed on countless session musicians.

The end product always justifies the means. Theres not a song on it I dont like.

Dan I never listened to it much. Maybe I will give it another spin one of these days.
12th July 2007 06:37 PM
Fiji Joe It has never set too well with me...Tracks like Gunface and Low Down are horrible...that said, Flip the Switch, sans the "turkey and the stuffing" and "shaving kit" lines is one of my favorite post Dirty Work tunes

I prefer Voodoo Lounge

mojoman B2B is a beautiful production maybe not enough rockers but a nice listen with alot of heart and soul...
12th July 2007 06:56 PM
mrhipfl I like it very much. The rockers and ballads are very cool but I hate the techno thing they did with Might as well get juiced. Anybody seen my baby is really sweet too.

fireontheplatter being their biggest fan one would think i would own a copy of this cd...but i don't.
i remember going to buy tickets for this show in poughkeepsie...the ticks went on sale for the giants stadium show, i believe it was a thursday and i had just gotten paid...i met this wonderful young gal in line and we ended up hooking up.
i drank a sixer of beer for the tailgate party. not one of my better time tho. i had the most fun in hartford this past tour and also in baltimore.

i hope to get a copy of this cd soon.

GotToRollMe This is one of my top 10 favorite Stones albums. I like it that much. The songs played out VERY well live, making for an exciting tour as well. And yeah, I loved that press conference - the image of the Stones driving across the Brooklyn Bridge, Mick at the wheel and Keith riding shotgun, is burned indelibly in my brain. I still listen to Bridges To Babylon today, and I never skip a track.

Soldatti I never liked the album that much, but it's getting better with the years. It has 3 GREAT songs on it: Out Of Control, Saint Of Me and Too Tight. Call me a sucker but ASMB was very cool in '97, it was played to death on radio and MTV/VH1.
Also, the '97-'98 Stones were very cool, by far my favorite post '82 tour and my favorite Keith look since 1983.

mrhipfl great DVD too.

I know. He was great during that show. I think he was pretty good during ABB in the states as well.

I have always thought bridges was a great album. Love ASMB. Thief in the night and how could I stop are some of the best tunes Keith ever did.

Egbert They put some effort into that one, and it shows. It could lose a couple songs (Lowdown and Juiced) and the overproduction and clean sound was off-putting for me at first - B2B is the only Stones album I don't like to listen to along with other Stones albums - doesn't have that classic shambolic sound of theirs. But there are some really good songs to be had and, count 'em, 3 Keith tunes! Great tour as well. Maybe their best post-Tattoo You album.

Jumacfly I like this album for this production and the sound, especially on the rockers.
I also love the production on the average ballad "already over me", with the accoustic guitar and the slide, extremly well done.
the techno sound on Juiced and the rap on ASMB are the only major pbs for me, and the fact that Ronnie doesn't play a lot on this one.
end of the record is not very catchy, good songs from Keef but not very rock n roll.

FotiniD I practically became a fan with B2B, album + tour.

So it's special for me. Endless hours listening to it over and over again and memorizing each line and chord... I was so certain it was a masterpiece! Then of course I listened to Sticky Fingers and that put a lot of things into perspective

But still, I love B2B. So many good memories. Speaking of ballads, "Already over me" is WAY better than "Streets of Love". "How can I stop" was the song I *had* to listen each and very night before I went to sleep in 1998 (ah, the follies of youth!).

And "Out of control" was such a beast live, wasn't it? I wish they played it more often.

yes!!!
Been watching it with Ms McFly on the other night, sound is really better on FF but nice performance and fantastic Keef.
I do prefer the 2007 sound ,muddiest and raw , but still waiting for the release of the new dvd

corgi37 I love b2b. At least they tried to do something different. I adore Juiced - it should have been the 1st single. A great marriage of drum & bass that fitted in with the times, yet not all that far from tracks like Little Red Rooster. Already over me is good too. The solo reminds me of Neil Young. Dont like the way the album ends though.

The only bummer about the cd is that i too was very excited watching the tour news, only to realise that they wouldnt come here so soon after VL.

And i was sadly fucking right.

Maxlugar When B2B came out, I happily rushed to purchase it at my local FYE (Coconuts, at the time) then ran, full speed, 23 blocks in my suit...tie flapping over my right shoulder... back to my super cool bachelor pad to give it a spin.

It remains the only Stones album that I didn't want to play it over again after listening to it start to finish with some cold ones.

No.

Instead, as the last notes of How Can I Stop drifted sadly and disappointedly from my speakers into the cool Astoria air, I slowly walked away...turning only to give my stereo an occasional sideways glace of bewilderment.

"This is no Voodoo Lounge!", my internal monologue shouted. "This is no Voodoo Lounge at all!!!"

Thanks.

Two of the best songs on the album IMO, and the title of the final song is a fabulous kiss-off to anyone thinking they were ready to hang it up....

Voodoo Lounge has its moments of magnificence and the raw sound is good, but I just think it runs out of steam and has about 4 songs that are pure filler. BTB is for me just a more consistent record overall.

Plus, VL contains that 'sharks will cry' line and BTB doesnt! One star deducted for THAT alone!

Voodoo Lounge is four times better than B2B IMHO, the reason being there's more of what I like in them on VL, i.e self assuredness and direction
