Greece win Euro 2004
EURO 2004 FINAL
Greece produced one of the biggests shocks in football history by beating hosts Portugal in the Euro 2004 final.
Angelos Charisteas scored from the Greeks first corner on 57 minutes, heading in Angelis Basinas' cross.
And they stifled Portugal's flair in a nervous second half thanks to excellent defending from the back four.
Portugal surged forwards and came very close through Cristiano Ronaldo, Maniche, and Luis Fugo but Greece keeper Antonios Nikopolidis stood firm.
In front of a fanatical crowd at The Stadium of Light, Portugal were frustrated from the start by a superbly-drilled Greek side, pulled together by coach Otto Rehhagel.
And there was double disappointment for Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who failed to add the European crown to the World Cup he won with Brazil two years ago.
The Greeks in contrast, made it a double over Portugal after beating the hosts in the opening game.
And few could begrudge them their joy after they also beat holders France and the Czech Republic.
Greece retreated quickly into defence in typical style, leaving Portugal to take the early initiative in front of an expectant crowd.
And Nikopolidis was forced into a fine fingertip save from Miguel's low drive after 13 minutes.
But Rehhagel's fiercely disciplined side occasionally broke the shackles to pose a threat of their own to Scolari's side.
Two minutes after Nikopolidis' save, Portugal counterpart Ricardo needed to be brave to dive at the feet of Charisteas after good work from Zisis Vryzas.
Greece had another narrow escape when Deco's corner was only partially cleared and Maniche's shot from the edge of the area flashed only inches wide.
But they were rare moments of dangers as the packed Greece rearguard, sometimes with ten men on the edge of the penalty area, started to frustrate the host country.
Portugal suffered a setback three minutes before the interval when Miguel, who was struggling after falling awkwardly, was replaced by Chelsea new boy Paolo Ferreira.
Greece were working incredibly hard to close Portugal down, with key creators Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo not being allowed any time or space.
And Greece broke the deadlock in dramatic style after 56 minutes with another trademark header from Charisteas.
He met a corner from Basinas powerfully to beat Ricardo and spark wild scenes of celebration among the Greek fans.
Portugal were stunned, but Ronaldo attempted to deliver an instant response, only to see his 20-yard shot blocked by Nikopolidis.
Scolari then made a typically bold substitution on the hour, removing a clearly unhappy Costinha and sending on veteran Rui Costa.
And he played his final card with 17 minutes left, sending on Nuno Gomes for the disappointing Pauleta.
Ronaldo immediately had Portugal's best opportunity when he was clean through, but he lifted his finish over Nikopolidis and over the bar.
KEY MOMENTS
16 mins: Greece almost stun the hosts through Charisteas
22 mins: Team-mates Pauletta and Miguel flatten each other in the Greek box
50 mins: Deco appeals in vain for a penalty and is lucky not to get booked
57 mins: Charisteas scores with a header from Greece's first corner kick
73 mins: Portugal make their last substitution with Nuno Gomes coming on for Pauletta
75 mins: Ronaldo blazes over from eight yards out
86 mins: A fan hurtles on to the pitch and dives into the net
89 mins: Figo fires wide from ten yards
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Portugal: Ricardo, Miguel, Carvalho, Andrade, Nuno Valente, Costinha, Maniche, Deco, Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pauleta.
Greece: Nikopolidis, Seitaridis, Kapsis, Dellas, Fyssas, Giannakopoulos, Zagorakis, Basinas, Katsouranis, Vryzas, Charisteas.
Referee: Markus Merk (Germany).

Congratulations Fotini!
Congratulations Greece!
No one will be sober enough to work for the next week...and now there's NO chance of that Olympic Stadium being finished in time! |

FotiniD |
Thanks guys Thanks to everyone
When Greece scored I couldn't believe my own eyes. And of course, the party is repeated for the third time in three weeks
I sincerely hope my boss doesn't expect me back work tomorrow... Really! And Gazza, I wouldn't worry, when the party's over we'll all have a double boost of energy I think
Congratulations also go to Portugal of course. This really means a lot for Greece because you see, NO-ONE even dreamt we would get this far. Even after beating France and Czech Republic, the odds were against Greece! Well, and there you have it!
Tomorrow's the big welcome for the team in the Panathenaic Stadium (pardon all sp. mistakes, brain's not functioning). In ancient Greece they used to bring the walls of the city down as a welcome, I can't imagine what we will bring down tomorrow We need to build some plastic walls or something

UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE! |

Congrats to Greece! What a solid team! Well, now it's not a disgrace but an honour, France was beaten by the new champion!
