Got this off of the "Sticky Fingers" mailing list:
"Billboard," the weekly USA music industry magazine has in its June 7, 2003, issue a regular section called "Studio Monitor." There's a small story about the guy who remixed the early 2003 Stones concert shown on HBO, the USA cable
channel. After the first, live HBO broadcast he remixed the show into digital 5.1 surround sound so the rebroadcasts that month sounded much better. He's
now off to digitally record the Stones on this tour in Paris and on a few other European dates...a possible live album seems good...

Great news.
NOW, yes NOW the Stones have gotten everyone by the balls!
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades!! |

If they were going to make a live album why would they use the HBO show? There are so many more gems from other shows that could be used for an album. |

As long as a live version of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" makes the album, I'll be happy. |

well - since the HBO show has video
and their last live album was an incredible commercial failure
I'm guessing their just gonna push DVD this tour. 13 song live albums really do a shitty job showing off the highlights of a tour. I'd much rather SEE this tour live than hear it |

a great 3 DVD box with one club, arena, and stadium show.
but they'll never do it |

You gotta hear the version of 'Midnight Rambler' from the final Melbourne show back in early March, March the 1st to be exact. Easily as good as The Ya Yas version. I'm told it's been booted, so I hope to hear it soon. |

Although I'm pretty sure it'll never happen, I'd love to have the Roseland version of She Smiled Sweetly on the new album or whatever. That version really does send shivers up my spine.
I'd also like to advocate the Aragon versions of Hand of Fate and Dance, the Enmore version of Rock me Baby, and (of course) Nearness of You. |

I would really love an official live album but it has to be based on the highlights of the tour...i don't want another No Security and if i want Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter,Start Me Up....i have the other albums.I think they can make an amazing album with all ''new'' songs like Bitch, Before They Make Me Run, Rocks Off, WTWCD,All Down The Line, which have the same rights to be released on a live album as the war horses.I can accept two exceptions: Street Fighting Man as opener(to be coherent with a standart setlist) and Tumbling Dice(awful version released on Love You Live)
Well, i made my point...now the tracklist:
1-Street Fighting Man
2-Bitch
3-If You Can't Rock Me
4-Stray Cat Blues
5-Worried About You
6-No Expectations
7-Loving Cup
8-Rocks Off
9-Everybody Needs Somebody To love
10-Tumbling Dice
11-A Keith Ballad(if he does Coming Down Again, thank you Jesus, if not Nearness or Thru and Thru)
12-Before They Make Me Run(why not 2 for Keith people?!)
13-Wild Horses(the one in MSG with everyone singing along)
14-When The Whip Comes Down
15-Rip This Joint
16-Hand Of Fate
17-All Down The Line
18-Can't Turn You Loose
19-Monkey Man
20-Can't You Hear Me Knockin'?

Why don't they pick three of their favorite performances; pare them down to seventy minutes so that they each fit on one cd and release them as a package? |
|

"Why don't they pick three of their favorite performances; pare them down to seventy minutes so that they each fit on one cd and release them as a package?"
they've been doing the same thing for how many years? These incomplete show live albums aren't really that good. look as No Security - could've been decent, but after 70 minutes, I was just sitting there like "yeah... and..." - I definitly didn't feel like I just got back from a Stones show. A 20+ song DVD gives a much more full dose.
3 different shows (from 3 different parts of the world - the HBO show, a Euro club show, and a stadium show) on 3 DVD's in a box is the only thing that would do this tour justice. I definitly wouldn't say they'd never did it. If they were just going to do a single DVD, they could have it out by now (or soon) - instead I think they could be waiting til they've collected a couple more shows
besides - they released the Lets Spend the Night Together show on DVD - and somebody said something about a '76 DVD - maybe they are trying to catch up on making their video archives more complete & accessible
"I would really love an official live album but it has to be based on the highlights of the tour...i don't want another No Security..." "I think they can make an amazing album with all ''new'' songs..."
that's exactly what No Security was attempting. the only thing you could hope that would be an improvement on it would be a setlist you like better - and its useless to hope for any more than a handful of rarities directly from your wishlist

Mr T:
Do you think that they would make the same mistake the did with No Security?
I don't doubt what you're saying, they tried different songs like Memory Motel and Sister Morphine(both beautiful played and the best on NS)but(couldn't agree more with you) didn't feel like it was a Stones show and that i cannot explain why because the songs are ok, the only one i hate is Corinna and i have awesome bootlegs from the babylon tour like the ones in the MSG and St Louis. No Security didn't reflect the experience of being on a babylon tour show.
But, i think, things could be different if they put some jewels(No Expectations, Worried About You)with powerful non-war horses songs(CYHMK, All Down The Line, Hand Of Fate, If You Can't Rock Me)and some greatest hits(Bitch,Tumblin Dice,Monkey Man)
And finally i think that my wishlist wouldn't be so far from what you think they should do, which i found very interesting by the way, but the topic is about a cd release so i put an idea for a live cd
Let's see what happens!

If they are gonna release a live album, it's probably going to be the popular songs, based on the fact that the "rare" songs on No Security had no appeal to regular rock n' roll fans.
Perhaps they could release a popular licks cd and a rare licks cd, but I'm not sure if that would be a good financial move.
Also, they should place a bonus DVD with the CD. Lots of bands are starting to do this to sell albums. |
|
|
| Soldatti |
Rare songs not sold, sure what we will got another standard live album as Flashpoint. |
|
|
| Beastie Bry |
Soldatti, do you have a vague idea of when a live album would be released? |
|
|
| Mr T |
I don't think the commercial failure of No Security was lying in the particular rarities they chose, but the fact that a live album of rarities doesn't hold enough commercial appeal to begin with. I don't think better song selection would've helped the album hardly at all if it was still meant to appeal to this board and similar audiences. I mean - Memory Motel vs. She Smiled Sweetly - like the average casual listener knows the difference? NO - all they know is its not a major hit & doesn't strike them. Anyone who was in search of overlooked gems probably bought No Security (most, anyway) - regardless of how they feel about the tracklist in retrospect. So, I'd say as far as sales, quality of the tracklist is ENTIRELY different from commercial appeal of the songs.
I think a live album - NO MATTER WHAT they put on it will be a flop(how bad a flop is largly inconsequential) - especially if they keep dishing out these half assed 13 song live albums - I am so tired of them. Yeah, Flashpoint & Ya-Ya's were good - even for shortened tracklists, but I want to be EXHAUSTED by the time those DVD's are over. After watching HALF of the Zeppelin DVD set, I felt like I had spent all afternoon watching it (just a little over 2 hours)
I think a triple DVD set is the ONLY way to go. Licks wasn't your average tour - so why cater to the average fan? or - why try to cater to the die hard fan & leave them half-disappointed? Just go all out - 1 Stadium, 1 Arena, 1 Theater - $35. Same price as buying No Security & the B2B DVD & twice as many songs. Following the success of the Zeppelin DVD's - they couldn't ask for a better time. And, you get to SEE the Stones. NS proved not many people wanna just hear them live, but they're at one of their most active points in years, and their NEVER on VH1 or MTV - I'm sure a lot more people are hungry to SEE some Stones. I doubt they're going to bother with another live album, at least until the tour following their next album
and non of those songs on your wishlist are hits (Monkey Man? gimme a break) - that is pure fan fiction - no less obscure than No Security
I think if they've smartened up - they'll know giving samles of a rare setlist show isn't gonna sell well - and a greatest hits show has already been done. This next release has to FEEL like a Stones show

I was speaking of a 3 DVD set the day this tour started. $30 to $40 for a 3 DVD set would be a great price and the amount of music and visual would be astounding.
Hey, instead of a live album, do a 3 DVD set with a bonus live album, instead of the other way around.
There's not much to look forward to when you go to the store. Bridges DVD and maybe a copy of At the Max, but VL is discontinued and they have no docs on DVD, nor do they have an updated video collection.
I'm telling you, these guys aren't gonna have what the Beatles have in that they can release all of that stuff 30 years after they've disbanded. The STones have to release stuff now because I just don't see rarities and box sets selling when these guys are done. |
|
|
| Mr T |
VL is discontinued? I still haven't got one on DVD (vhs though) |

You can find o VL DVD on E-bay at a reasonable price. |

where do you get your information from? |
|
|
| Flashpoint |
Alright, i get you Mr T...you are not happy with the idea of live cd no matter what is in it, it wouldn't make it to you and i can perfectly see that.It maybe the same feeling i'd have if they do another Flashpoint...i WILL NOT buy it, i have so many bootlegs i want that i won't spend many on what i already have.I thought about all this people who only like the Stones because of Satisfaction, Angie and Start Me Up....i looked at the 7 official live albums and i made a setlist trying not to put any of those songs and that's why the only hits i found were those..but you're right Monkey Man is not a big hit(the fans really like it though),i checked again and Beast of Burden takes it place(until they play Mixed Emotions)so perhaps these people will rediscover the Stones listening to CYHMK,All Down the Line,Bitch,etc....if this doesn't work the 3 DVD idea it may have the same weak point....why a non-stone fan will buy 3 DVD if he is only interested in the stadium show with all the greatest hits?....i mean, if he won't buy a cd with a bunch of rarities why buy the Arena and Club Shows if he will be already happy with his Stadium show?.Beacause he can't get just one of them?...it will depend on the price and it sure will be more expensive than a double cd.
Maybe the point is that it's enough of listening to the Stones....let's see them and if it is i'm with you, man!, but don't blame the setlist, we all have our personal favourites.... |
|
|
| Mr T |
I won't lie to you - I'll buy it no matter what they put on it (well - unless they're TRYING to make it terrrible) - even if its on a CD. But I think they sould abandon the live album idea for this tour - it hasn't done them many favors in the recent past, and they only have 1 new song to put in it. The DVD may not be THAT much more commercial - but its sure to do a little better just because they are doing it right. I love Flashpoint, and I like No Security, but a live album like either of those would be lame. If they're gonna do it, do it right. Let us SEE the show, and let it run more than 70 minutes. I think a 3 DVD set for $35 could do pretty well if they gave it a good chance, concert DVDs are becoming a bigger & bigger thing. Just look at how religiously people watched the Zep DVD's a couple weeks ago. The past DVD's didn't get a whole lot of attention - I think if they treated this one like real release - and like it was something special, they could move a lot more copies - especially if it has 5 dozen or so songs on it. Anything less isn't gonna get much attention - but they have a chance now, especially following the success of 40 Licks (and come on - if they were thinking about putting out a box of outtakes - they could definitly do this) |
|
|
| Flashpoint |
Yeah, now all the bands are releasing DVD (U2,Metallica,Zep)and Jagger always wants to 'stay in tune' with the music market and stuff so there's a big chance that this happens and it's the right thing to do...see, now i started to think about this idea too much and i want to buy it now!
I'm trying to imagine how it would be watching all people jumpin' during Can't Turn You Loose and Worried About You with Mick playing on keyboards right now....it's priceless
Question:i didn't watch the HBO show...it should be the DVD Arena show in case they release 3 DVD's?
[Edited by Flashpoint] |
|
|
| Mr T |
yeah - and I'd imagine if they weren't planning on making a set, they'd be working on getting that DVD released in the very near future so Americans don't forget about the Stones while their in Europe. The fact that they are holding off only feeds my hopes |
|

| Soldatti |
Well, the release date is almost sure. They always released album in the fall:
Stripped - November
Circus - October
Babylon - October
