Ten Thousand Motels
Watching girls go passing by
It aint the latest thing
Im just standing in a doorway
Im just trying to make some sense
Out of these girls go passing by
The tales they tell of men
Im not waiting on a lady
Im just waiting on a friend
A smile relieves a heart that grieves
Remember what I said
Im not waiting on a lady
Im just waiting on a friend
Im just waiting on a friend
Dont need a whore
I dont need no booze
Dont need a virgin priest
But I need someone I can cry to
I need someone to protect
Making love and breaking hearts
It is a game for youth
But Im not waiting on a lady
Im just waiting on a friend

According to Frank Sinatra, it was the greatest thing that LENNON AND MCCARTNEY had ever done.

i tell myself that all the time - i think to myself,
'surely, i've outgrown this...'
and yes, winter is up there -
there are other great ones from the stones,
but winter is the only song that is just purely romantic....
there's no bitter,, cynical undertones.
even the great lester bangs wrote something like,
'damn if you just don't wallow in it's warmth...'

Actually and suprisingly,
I have to give it to Meatloaf, "Two out of three".
Great song. Great lyrics and meaning as well. If I had to choose one one ballad I gotta give it to that.
Maybe as #2 "You've Lost that Lovin Feeling" The Righteous Brothers
*Beast of Burden gets honorable mention. Ruby Tuesday is also high on the list.

Alison by Elvis Costello and It Makes No Difference by The Band. Two songs that steer clear of ballad cliches but paint a vivid picture of lost love and longing. Great stuff. God Only Knows by the Beach Boys is an ace tune, too.
