Rolling Stones Command Top Ticket Sales for May
Tuesday June 7, 2:59 pm ET
Rolling Stones Trump Baseball, U2 According to TicketsNow Entertainment Index
CHICAGO, June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rolling Stones proved they are still one of the biggest concert draws in all of rock n' roll as the band claimed the top spot in the TicketsNow Entertainment Index for the month of May. TicketsNow.com, the world's largest and most secure online marketplace for secondary event tickets, saw Rolling Stones fans out-purchase U2 fans as well as the fans of three of baseball's most storied franchises: the Red Sox, Yankees, and Cubs.
The Rolling Stones tour, which kicks off August 21 in Boston at Fenway Park, has 31 dates on the calendar and is already seeing premium tickets at some venues command more than $5,000. The Stones will perform with various other groups throughout the tour including Maroon 5, Pearl Jam, and John Mayer.
Baseball again proved that fans are still coming out to the ballparks in droves as all top five sellers in the sports category were baseball teams; the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Baltimore Orioles were the top five sports tickets sold. Wicked, for the fifth month running, held on to its top spot for theater tickets, making it the seventh most popular event on the site overall.
Following are the category leaders for May:

Rolling Stones set to break record
Early reports regarding the presale of tickets as well as speculated sponsorship deals indicate that the 2005 Rolling Stones Tour will top the 1994-5 "Voodoo Lounge" tour as the most profitable in US history. With their 1994-95 "Voodoo Lounge" tour, the Rolling Stones set a record by grossing nearly $340 million.
For the 2005 tour, income from tickets, merchandise and corporate sponsorship for Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood is expected to reach an astonishing $400 million.
The average face value of a single ticket for the concerts in America and Canada is $90 but tickets are now selling for an average of $400 on eBay. This amount is expected to go up as mid-summer approaches.

It is necessary to take into account the price the tickets. And in that case, U2 is far in front of the Stones. |

And no generalized "rush" comparable to U2... |

That might be true, but it misses the point. Imagine if the Stones were priced more competitively. ... They're charging immoral sums of money, and they're still selling out venues fairly quickly. |

The "immoral ticket price" strategy is working do to the limited supply of tickets. They are only playing one show in Houston a city of nearly 2 million, and 2 shows in Texas a state with over 22 million. Not to mention people from Louisiana and other neighboring states. Even at $400.00 a ticket you will have no problem finding 28,000 takers for what could be the final tour. |

It's funny but I've been hearing reports
across the country of many unexplained accidents
over the last several days. An investigator has now
discovered a common link. It seems they were all
playing Coldplay's new album X&Y. The investigator
has advanced a theory that the new album causes the
brain to relax to such a state where the victims become
drowsy, groggy eventually losing consciousness.
They fall into a sleep like state until they awake
at a later time either to find their cars
totalled if they were driving or on the floor
if they were listening to the album at home.

I disagree. I don't see any stadium shows on the U2 Tour. The highest grossing tour of all time is still Voodoo Lounge. Tickets were $25-50 on that tour. That same year, the Eagles were charging $100, and Pink Floyd $75, and the Stones outdrew and outgrossed the both of them. As far as attendance goes, I dont think anybody is ever going to get near the Steel Wheels tour.
U2 is playing North American areans, because I think they are little bit gun shy from the 1997 Popmart stadium tour. That tour was filled with half empty stadiums. |
|
gimmekeef |
Whether we accept the pricing strategy or believe it to be a rip off...The fact they are selling out arenas in minutes and stadiums within a day or two in most cases indicates the boys are still the kings of the boxoffice.... |

"U2 is playing North American areans, because I think they are little bit gun shy from the 1997 Popmart stadium tour. That tour was filled with half empty stadiums."
U2 had alienated a lot of longtime fans by embracing popular culture and electronic music. They could have probably pulled off stadiums following the Joshua Tree or Actung Baby, but I don't know what they were thinking launching that type of tour following Zooropa and Pop.
