That's because Got Live it just awful........
10th April 2008 08:13 AM
speedfreakjive can't believe they've put in 'Rocks Off' from Live Licks - they cut out 'chasing shadows, moonlight mystery' on that
10th April 2008 10:02 AM
Zack Including Memory Motel with Dave Matthews is absurd, as is excluding Under My Thumb from Still Life. That song made the record and is a great moment in the Stones' live canon.
10th April 2008 10:14 AM
Nasty Habits Agreed about Dave Matthews, one of my BOTTOM FIVE Stones moments EVER, utterly destroying the credibility of this list.

Got Live the LP is indeed a mess, but Got Live the EP is brilliant and the absence of "I'm Moving On" (Ray Charles and Hank Snow strapped to a slide guitar train bound for hell) or "I'm All Right" (the song that introduced the concept of workout as "song" to white people all over the non-Pacific Northwest world) on this is lame. As is no "Sympathy" from Ya-Ya's (the greatest thing recorded by anyone ever) and the upraising of Mannish Boy over the rest of side three of Love You Live (Crackin' Up destroys that Mannish Boy completely.) And I'm no Clapton fan and even I know that the edited version of Little Red Rooster on Flashpoint isn't half as good as the complete version.

Crap article.

mrhipfl the only good thing on live licks is "That's how strong my love is."
10th April 2008 12:28 PM
Dan I am proud to say I never bought, downloaded or listened to Live Licks in any capacity whatsoever.

Well what do you expect. We are talking about Rolling Stone here. Their credibility has been in the shitter for decades now.

I could not agree with you more about Crackin' Up. That is hands down the greatest tune off Love You Live. As for the ommission of Sympathty from Ya-Ya's, well again, we are talking about Rolling Stone here. That live version of Sympathy should be required listening to every writer in any music publication. Just the fact that this guy includes Rocks Off from Live Licks tells me all I need to know about his musical knowledge.

My first exposure to live Stones. Under My Thumb still totally rules but sadly the rest is eclipsed by all the far superior bootlegs circulating.

Side one kicks ass..I played that every morning for about a year...admittedly, I think I've played side two only three times...you're right, Hampton, Phoenix, Tokyo, et al...better
10th April 2008 05:35 PM
andrews27 There's at least two standouts on each of those discs, except "No Security," which really has only Memory Motel. Notice how that dismal-selling record gets three plugs? "Flashpoint" is much a better and more exciting listen, especially if you count in the bonus tracks available on vinyl, like Play With Fire .

One great, odd track is Sympathy for the Devil on "Get Yer Ya-ya's Out." It made Stones fans out of a lot of people, but it's edited into that two-solo configuration that they never really played, and probably couldn't if they tried.

Despite the overdubs and other mash-ups, I always thought "Love You Live" has been underrated in print. Fans loved it back when, and you always heard sides 3 and 4 in the late hours of a party. To me, the second-best official live album.
10th April 2008 06:36 PM
Gazza Aside from some truly bizarre inclusions ('Rocks Off' from Live Licks - its a joke, right. Probably the worst released song in the band's history for obvious reasons), there are some shocking omissions from that list :

Sympathy from YaYa's and Flashpoint
Out Of Control from No Security
Thats How Strong My Love Is from Live Licks

Does anyone REALLY think "Some Girls" from the new album is essential yet "Champagne & Reefer" ISN'T?

..and whilst the LP 'Got Live If you Want It' is deservedly ignored, unfortunately the live EP of the same name shouldn't be.

A gloriously, underrated little nugget with an incendiary-like version of Route 66.

Dude, what are you talking about? That's not edited. They cut the fourth verse and did vocal overdubs ("get on down" etc), but that was it. The solos are like that on all of the boots from later in the tour. In this case, Keith plays the solo of his life, and Taylor matches it. Don't try to sully one of the great moments in rock and roll history!

There's more than one segment of the song edited out of order from the recorded MSG performance. There was a good article comparing the Apple Acetate to Ya-ya's second-for-second in the old Sticky Fingers fanzine c. 1997. Go check it, then check yourself, dude. Try and find another version played like that on the 1969 tour, and I'll find you all the ones that aren't.

"Sully," indeed!

M.O.W.A.T. Obviously, the writer had his hearing aid turned off when he said that Rocks Off "remained wonderfully unpolished".

So what are you suggesting?

I always thought Chris M. was a reliable source on these issues, and he makes no mention of an edit on the song, apart from the verse being cut. An 11-year-old article from the Sticky Fingers fanzine is a pretty obscure reference as well. I've got my copy right over here . . .

Exactly how do you suggest it was edited then?

I don't have the article with me now. Can anyone back me up here? Article in the Sticky Fingers fanzine, 1997 or 1998, comparing the "Apple Acetate" bootleg to the edited/overdubbed "Ya-ya's" LP, second-per-second for each song. Shows segments of Sympathy moved out-of-order in the "Ya-ya's" edit, plus the cut verse. Some of the transposing, as I recall, was to better transition the verse cutting. Result: a version of Sympathy unlike any ever played onstage, ever.
11th April 2008 07:28 AM
Gazza Here's ChrisM's article if you want to compare :

Zack Ahem . . .
11th April 2008 08:44 PM
andrews27 Ahem, yourself. This is just Chris M.'s attempt to ID which night's version was used for Ya-ya's. The article I'm talking about, a second-for-second comparison of Ya-ya's with the then recently released Apple Acetate boot, pinpointed edits *and* transpositions. Have you heard the boot, or another from 28th 1st?

Why does Sympathy on Ya-ya's sound like no other version ever played? Not just the edited verse - transpositions out-of-order within the song.

In the absence of my documentary proof, and the insufficiency of yours. I concede nothing.

"Sully," indeed - you're lucky dueling is out of fashion.
11th April 2008 09:32 PM
glencar Is the Got Live If You Want IT EP available on CD? I've never heard it. I have the crappy LP version & the better remastered version.

Now we see the violence inherent in the system!

Yes I have heard 11/28 first and also have the Apple acetate. I don't hear any difference. Listen, it's you who's saying something that bucks conventional wisdom, not me.

That's what I was wondering too...
12th April 2008 04:11 PM
Ronnie Richards That list is just bizarre...
The Licks version of Rocks Off is - excluding Back To Zero - the absolute nadir of the Stones entire output..

If, for some strange reason, you had to pick only seven songs to represent the official live releases it should have been:
Love In Vain, Midnight Rambler and Sympathy from Ya-Ya's, Around and Around from LYL, Under My Thumb from Still Life, Slipping Away from Stripped, and Champagne & Reefer from SAL.
