Pete Townshend sexually abused as a child
Pete Townshend says that he was sexually abused as a child. Townshend, who has been posting excerpts from his upcoming autobiography, titled Who He? on his blog (petetownshend-whohe.blogspot.com), and recently posted a tale chronicling sexual abuse that he fell victim to at age ten. Townshend wrote about an event during his brief experience in the "Sea Scouts" program, in which two older men forced him to shower in front of them as an "initiation" and implied that further sexual abuse followed, writing only that, "What followed needs no description."
The guitarist stressed that the experience affected him forever, including the way he approached all music and art.
Townshend, who has been posting excerpts from the first volume of the book, titled Who He? Book One - 1945-1969, had earlier written that he was physically abused by his mentally ill grandmother at the age of six, while left in her care. Elsewhere, Townshend has stated that he feels that he had been sexually abused either by her or by one of her male suitors during that period.
Who He? Book One - 1945-1969 is due out next year. Townshend has published one other book, 1985's collection of short stories, titled Horse's Neck.
The Who will next perform on Saturday (March 31st) at a benefit for the Teenage Cancer Trust at London's Royal Albert Hall. The band kicks off their European tour on May 16th in Lisbon, Portugal. |
